What’s your favorite synth?

Hi, this is matriarch from mogh, it's para phonic and i know that needs explaining we'll get to that and it has stereo filters, stereo delays and a stereo VCA pair. The entire signal path is analog and it's semi modular, which means you can rewire its internal organs and connected to you, Iraq, [ Music ], but it also has a few digital surprises up its sleeve or cover all that and more. Let'S get started: [ Music ]. Let'S start with an overview: matriarch has a four octave vitarka board, both velocity-sensitive with after touch it has four oscillators playable para phonic li in a couple special ways: i'll explain what that means in a bit

 How can you get this interesting, nice, Steffie, oscillator, sync and ring Hut combination, [ Applause, ], now, really weird things happen when you cross modulate things one of the interesting ones. I think over here happen when you simply patch the wave out of oscillator 2 into the linear fm of oscillator 1 and keep them in sync. Now this works best when oscillator 2 is in a square waveform, and this can be, let's say in a saw, so something really interesting happens here. I think when you bring up oscillator 1 right as you turn this knob, even though it's a fine tuned knob starts playing these minor sub harmonics right and these work across sort of like an octave range in this narrow frequency range

 Then I'll do the same with the second pair, plug them into VCF two and make a little bridge here and now. Oscillators three and four are penned right: [, Music, ] and oscillators 1 & 2 [ Music ], our pen lift. Now you do lose level control here, but if you wanted to, you could easily use the attenuators for that just pass these two through the attenuators. So that's how you can play the oscillators in stereo as well and use these stacked cables as a shortcut

Moog MATRIARCH: Review, full tutorial and patch ideas

  While you're stuck with four-by-four bars of transitions, that's good enough to work out a quick idea. I can then work out more complex progressions later with the BeatStep Pro driving changes with different bar lengths. Net, I now have a super easy solution for rapidlky exploring root chord progressions by ear while composing on guitar. The thing just gets out of the way

 It's core sound. Plus, variable pulse width modulation like the Mother 32 is just so flexible in itself.  I didn't really factor the quirky sequencer into my buying decision, but it has suddenly become a critical part of my workflow. In fact, I'm entirely rethinking how I approach rhythmic bass thanks to this unit

  If you're more into traditional rock or metal and want to quickly prototype a changing sixteen-bar bassline to play over with a guitar, patch Seq 1 into VCO1 for pitch, assign Rhythm 1 to Sequencer 1 (via the button), and crank Rhythm 1 hard left (slowest). Then crank Rythm 2 hard right (fastest) and assign that to Sequencer 2. Control tempo to taste. Sequencer 1 will now drive an arpeggiated chord progression to Sequencer 2 for sixteen looping bars

Taking this thing into the casket

 The Sub Phatty is simply the best synth you can buy at the $1000 and below price range. Not that this is 1978 and there is a lot of competition in analog monosynths, still this is a great addition.  Reminds me of a Korg MS-20, but with Moog sound.  There are presets, but it's a great synth for learning, if you don't know you VCF from your VCO

 I can't quite get to that sort of super bright carplay, strong thing, and another thing to mention is one of the global settings. Is you can have the delay sort of darker filtered or brighter? I prefer it brighter because otherwise it gets a bit mushy, but you know you might want a bit more of a murky sound. It would have been nice if the delay was perhaps a bit more high fire. You had a bit more time, so we could use it more like a looper with some sort of more pristine quality, but i get the vintage vibe

 We don't get those really massive high-pass harmonics that you can when you, when you come down in frequency, um, so yeah, it's not quite designed to be. You know two discrete filters. Uh with you know that that that they work in combination so uh coming back to the other mode, which is parallel, high, pass low pass that creates. If we take the resonance down [ Music ], that creates like a notch, filter, [, Music ]

 Show you how to do that. So what we got here is the antenna inverters uh. If you don't plug anything into the input it becomes like an offset voltage. So i can literally just kind of bring put that into the pitch in let's just turn down a bunch of i've got the output

 We go into tap tempo mode and then we really [ Music, ] slow it down. You can hear there's that sort of bbd, clocking and aliasing, because it's basically half in the sample rate [, Music, ] or, alternatively, we can just go [ Music ]. Pulled the trigger on this Prophet Rev2 desktop. Hooking it up to my Arturia Keylab Mkii 49. Sounds amazing. Only other synth I’ve owned is a Korg Minilogue and I didn’t love it so I sold it, and have just been using Arturia Analog Lab and V Collection 8, but this Rev2 is amazing

New Synth. Totally blown away. Amazing.

In this price range I would probably get a Prophet Rev2, which is an amazing synth that will keep you busy for years. Vintage synths like the Juno or DX7 are cool, but they have a lot of maintenance issues. I would start with a modern synth (unless you find an amazing deal for one of those).

I've been using logic for years and the built-in synths and I understand the basics of a synth, so really I'm trying to move from digital to physical synths. 

I've been researching but I'm having a hard time finding and narrowing down ones that would be good for my first synth.

Suggestions for my first synthesizer

 If you like, or values the gated sequencer can either be free running like this or work on a step-by-step basis in key step mode, [, Music, ]. I think this is one of the more unique and compelling features of the Rev, and you can accomplish all this with the menus, but the software is a lot more. Usable Rev also has an arpeggiator pretty standard stuff, the old mode, if you like, and the standard arpeggiator options. Okay, let's move on to sound design, [, Music ]

 This is the desktop version which has exactly the same features as the Rev with the keyboard, but it's slightly cheaper and takes up much less space. I prefer this one because you can put it on a stand in an angle and I can hook up any key. Any MIDI keyboard that I want to it. If I want a small one that works well and if I want to go bigger, I can whatever keyboard you do choose to hook up, make sure that it's velocity and after type sensitive, because these can be modulation sources in the Rev

 I want using the mod matrix, but there's another third envelope that we can use to route anywhere else. So, let's, for example, take the pitch of oscillator of the oscillators as a modulation destination. You can affect it either positive or negatively and with delay. You can have the effect be applied a while, after you press the key, so standard stuff and there's a variety of destinations here now beside that you can also loop this envelope

 So the idea here is that I can choose a preset. Let'S say this one and then let's take another one, take this guy, for example, and then either mix so have steps that are mixed in between them or morphed in between them. So let's say take this one, for example. So it's sort of, if you look at this as the starting point - and this is the end point - you've got all the sounds in between

Review of the Prophet Rev2 by Dave Smith - is it the analog poly synth for you?

TL;DR I want something with responsive knobs and sliders that’s gonna be able to give me nice warm and interesting chord/pad sounds plus fat funky bass-lines and fun melodic runs. 

 I’m not as big on the computer-y, science-fiction-y kinds of sounds that the cs seems to produce because I don’t really make techno or EDM… although I am interested in the roughness and gritty quality of many sound effects and bass-lines found in a lot of contemporary music today. I have a reface cp coming in the mail because that Rhodes sound is a staple for me, but I need something else more synthesizery to play around with making sounds for anything from cool textures(pads) to fun bass-lines and slick melodic ear-worms. I wanted to spend about 300-500 dollars but after research it looks like maybe the Deepmind 12 would be the best fit for what I’m looking for, and possibly the most fun? I’m thinking I should save up for that. Is there anything that isn’t on my radar? I probably would want to get something with polyphony for a first synth and don’t want something like the reface dx because it doesn’t seem quite as intuitive even though the sounds can be nice

Edit: I went to Sam Ash today to see what they had to try out. They didn’t have a deepmind on the floor but I played a prophet rev2 and I could tell I would be able to get the sounds I want from that thing… and way more than I would ever need. I also played a Minilogue because I know how popular they are and it makes complete sense. That thing was extremely intuitive, cool sounding, and fun even if it wasn’t producing the exact sounds I’m looking for

 For instance, I read a lot of positive comments about the Prophet Rev2, but then I’ve also seen videos from people who I share similar tastes who say they didn’t like it, and I know from experience that minority opinion of people I’m familiar with is way more valuable than a consensus of strangers. So I don’t think I would trust reviews or scores from a site like the one you’re proposing.

I've been working on the site quite a bit in hopes of making it more useful for the synth nerd (amongst other types of musicians), but here's the rub: 

**I want it to be useful beyond being _"that website that shows you what gear pros are using."_** 

You know how BeerAdvocate helps you figure out if a beer is good, or Rotten Tomatoes helps you decide what movie to watch? I'm trying to get as close to that as possible with Equipboard.

  So this in on paper something that's not clear, which leads me to believe it's a sonic thing, and I get that.  So I've tried listening to some videos and such and I'm pretty sure I can rule out the Rev2 as being too similar to some of things, the P-5 and the P-6 having the VCO's that are so critical.  But between the P-5 and the P-6 I'm having a bit a trouble really distinguishing things.  Can someone help me out here?
