Korg Volca Bass vs Sequential Prophet REV2

The fact that you can’t really save the actual tone and only a pattern made using it is an “aha” moment. Yet the sound this instrument generates is worth the trade off. It is juicy, deep, rich and super analog in its roundness. Often unpredictable too, in a good way

Pulled the trigger on this Prophet Rev2 desktop. Hooking it up to my Arturia Keylab Mkii 49. Sounds amazing. Only other synth I’ve owned is a Korg Minilogue and I didn’t love it so I sold it, and have just been using Arturia Analog Lab and V Collection 8, but this Rev2 is amazing

I mean to say, the Volca Bass is fat sounding, and oh!!! it has that distorted squeal that is very similar to a Roland TB-303 (or the Behringer clone). The filter resonance (peak knob) on this wee thing self-oscillates, so if you're looking to do a bit of Daft Punk or Chemical Brothers-style late 90s and early 00s techno work, this little guy can do it, and do it very nicely. Let's get the cons out of the way: The speaker is rubbish. I get why Korg put it there, but the speaker doesn't have the range to actually hear what all the glorious goodness this synth can make

For instance, I read a lot of positive comments about the Prophet Rev2, but then I’ve also seen videos from people who I share similar tastes who say they didn’t like it, and I know from experience that minority opinion of people I’m familiar with is way more valuable than a consensus of strangers. So I don’t think I would trust reviews or scores from a site like the one you’re proposing.

You will eventually damage your Volca. So please, use a headphone splitter for splitting headphone signals into two. But don’t try and invent something like ‘a backwards splitter joining two signals and yay! We have a backwoods $5 mixer!’ No…you don’t. You’ll actually need to get a real mixer with resistors and circuits designed to safely join multiple audio signals into one signal path

TL;DR I want something with responsive knobs and sliders that’s gonna be able to give me nice warm and interesting chord/pad sounds plus fat funky bass-lines and fun melodic runs.

After growing up around a whole family that revolves around music since I can remember, These devices bring back those memory's from the beginning for me! The way they even look & sound is almost a perfect mirror reflection of what I've experience from the past. This review is for the "korg volca bass" so I'll tell you how it sounds to me. The volca bass sounds pretty much like the korg monotribe as far as quality goes, it's simple & great. The operation & programming is why I love this unit the most! I'm a "real-time" performer, meaning when I play live or even in studio I prefer to pretty much keep the beat going simply put

So this in on paper something that's not clear, which leads me to believe it's a sonic thing, and I get that. So I've tried listening to some videos and such and I'm pretty sure I can rule out the Rev2 as being too similar to some of things, the P-5 and the P-6 having the VCO's that are so critical. But between the P-5 and the P-6 I'm having a bit a trouble really distinguishing things. Can someone help me out here?

The Volca Bass is an insanely compact, powerful, and affordable "monosynth" that may surprise you with its usefulness in creating and recording music. I briefly owned a used Arturia MicroBrute, but had to return it because of a defect. That led me to look more at the overall landscape for affordable analog synthesizers (which, until quite recently, was a sentence that wouldn't have made any sense). Either you go up to the $500 range and look at something like the Novation BassStation 2 (not really an option for me), or you look at the Volca series for about half the price of a new MicroBrute

In this price range I would probably get a Prophet Rev2, which is an amazing synth that will keep you busy for years. Vintage synths like the Juno or DX7 are cool, but they have a lot of maintenance issues. I would start with a modern synth (unless you find an amazing deal for one of those).
