Best Jazz heads?

The easy answer is Remo Ambassador coated, or any of the various "skin" heads - Remo Fiberskyn, Evans Calftone, etc. As for budget friendly, I've become a big fan of [the dirt-cheap house brand heads from Drum Factory Direct.

Was a little surprised to open up a sealed box and pull out an obviously used drum head. Worn out center spot and there was even a dent around 3:00. I’ll still use it, hoping it’s broken in, even though I didn’t ask for it.

Looking to get back into drumming after 15+ year gap

For snare drum batter heads, I always use a coated head, and I prefer Remo Powerstroke P3 or Controlled Sound Reverse Dot. Those might be easier to tune for you since you're just getting back into things, compared to something like an Emperor or Ambassador. If you need to replace the snare head, make sure you choose a snare-side head (e.g., Remo Ambassador Hazy snare head). While you're checking the heads on your snare drum, check the condition of your snare wires too.

You can choose heads based on the sound you like, if it were me I'd probably put Remo Ambassador clears on the bottom and coated on the top, but if you like a crisper low-overtone sounds go with a two-ply head on top, and if you like a louder sound with overtones, go clear top and bottom. For the snare, I love my Evans genera dry with the vent holes, thin and clear for the bottom.

Four piece kits are fun too

That kit is a lovely kit but to make it sound even better you better change those heads. Get something like Evans genera G1 or remo coated ambassador on toms and snare batter side and clear remo ambassadors on the reso side. And change the bass drum head to an Emad clear level 360 or a Remo powerstroke 3 clear. Then it sounds really good.

Could have shipped in a bigger box

Thankfully I fixed the head on my own, but the seller could have shipped this in a bigger box to prevent shipping damage like this. Otherwise, great batter head for my floor tom.

Remo ambassador coated on all drums as coated and reso, tune them up bebop high and have no muffling in the bass drum then youre set to go

What can you say? It’s just a classic, good drum head. Sounds good, or as good as you can make it sound in my case.
