Feeling insecure about my kit

Hardware and tuning make much more of a difference than wood. Your kit is fine until you just want a nicer kit. I play a Mapex Mars which gets pretty much no love in the industry but, to me, it sounds great and I've never heard anything but positive things from anyone who plays it or hears it.

I hadn't played for about 10 years, and decided to start again. Great shell pack, I can't tell you what factory heads sound like, as I put proper heads on first thing, and I love em. Awesome tone for the money.

What should my first official drum kit be?

Based on your budget, you'd want to shop used so you can try to get the most complete kit you can find that would include cymbals, stands, and other hardware. You might luck out. But it's important to recognize that while even entry level kits can be made to sound good with good heads and tuning (e.g., Pearl Export, Mapex Mars, etc.

It looks like a 90's Mapex Mars Pro. Those are very nice sounding drums - much better than the price point would suggest.

What do I need to buy for first gigs?

Mapex Mars are affordable and a great set of birch drums. They are very easy to tune and stay in tune and have great sound and project very well.

Need a second, starter to mid-range kit.

You can probably buy a used kit and save a ton of money. Check your local FB and gumtree listings, but obv a peral export will do the job. Similarly, a Yamaha stage custom, mapex mars or M, or gretsch Catalina would all be good shouts.
