I just got finished checking out for the first time, fresh out of the box, the new Pearl EXL Export Series Kit.

Lastly I'd say this is also a great choice for people that run music schools or perhaps music venues.

I would go used and look for a mid tier drum set like a Pearl Export or like the Tama Imperialstar you mentioned, but it’s hard to go wrong. Most of the bigger name brands like Tama, Pearl, Yamaha, etc. should have well constructed shells and it’s just a matter of getting good heads and good cymbals.

Buy used - Yamaha stage custom, or Pearl Export. You’ll also need cymbals, again buy used - zildjian a series, or Sabian aa series. Try and get a complete set - hi hats, 2 crash, and a ride.

Just put some effort into searching around for deals, and you'll most likely have to obtain your hardware pieces separately. There is nothing wrong with the Pearl Export though if you have your heart set on one or don't want to spend the time looking around. Just be aware you'll be just buying into another entry level set of drums.

Pearl Decade is one of my favorite bang-for-the-buck sets that is currently for sale. Used, I've been really impressed with prices for pre-Concept PDP's. Like the MX, CX, FS, M5, X7 and Platinums. Of course if you're sticking to a tight budget it's hard to beat a Pearl Export...can be found for super cheap but with hardware that can take a beating.

2nd hand: cheaper shell pack like maybe a Pearl export or anything similar from other brands, nicer cymbals like zildjian A maybe, again 2nd hand. buy kit with hardware then buy a new throne. maybe kick pedal as well.
