 And it's a real sensitive sounding snare drum. I have it tuned up kind of high but like I said it's versatile, you can tune it down low, put a little dampening on it and you can get a totally different sound if you'd like. But it's got a nice volume bump from the edge of the drum to the center. It's sensitive in the hands and it's got a nice big cracky back beat when I want to play a simple kind of funky or kind of rock beat

 Just a little simple bolt clamps on and stays in place so you're good to go there. The sound of these drums is great. The mahogany wood with Gretches thirty degree bearing edges adds to that warm tone. Let me turn the snare wires off and play you the sound of these toms

 But first, let's get into the hardware. The hardware in this kit, really cool, very versatile and heavy duty, works really well. Got the big Gretsch gas cap on the kick drum here, holds the rack tom in place, nice and sturdy and it's a great visual feature as well. You got a ball joint and your single tom holder right here, you can also attach another cymbal arm here if you'd like to

 Do your old Gene Krupa exercises if you want to with this kit. The snare drum is really sensitive, comes with a nice ratchet style throw off while you're on the left hand side, really easy to use on and off very quickly with the snare drum wires. And it's a real sensitive sounding snare drum.  Using coated ambassador heads, just basic single ply coated ambassadors, you get a nice attack and the warmth. It's very musical sounding and a great tone interval between each drum. I needed something smaller and lighter without sacrificing tone and quality. I tried all the drum sets in Guitar Center. I was hoping to get The DW set but I was not that impressed with the tone VS the cost.

 Go ahead and leave me a comment below giving me your thoughts on the improvements that they've done to this kit, the finishes, the new bass drum mount. I definitely think they have upped the game for this kit while still trying to keep the price as low as possible so all of us can get it into our hands. Especially if you're looking for either a classic tone drum set or just a smaller drum set that's easy to pack up. So that's going to do it for today and as always remember if you want to stay up to date on the latest drum gear, pick up tips and tricks and look at products like we did today

 We're going to hop in the car, we're going to go right over to Hugh's house. He has a brand new Catalina Club in a very pretty finish. I'll show you pictures and video of all of the upgrades. These include things like new claw hooks for the bass drum hoops, a new tom mount which looks amazing, it looks like they have redone the tension rods, and even though I didn't get any film of it, it looks like they are doing a better job of finishing the inside of the shell as far as sanding it down and making it look really nice

 So I ended up with all three of us there with the drum set and that's what you're going to see for the sound examples. You will hear Hugh playing it himself and then you'll hear Cedric playing it, which will give you a nice variety in somebody that doesn't hit very hard and somebody that hits a little harder. And obviously because their styles are different, the drums will sound a little different as how far as they will react. Now keep in mind, Hugh is a Dixieland swing jazz type player

 Of course, there's a couple of drummers hanging out. Drummers want to come and hang. So I ended up with all three of us there with the drum set and that's what you're going to see for the sound examples. You will hear Hugh playing it himself and then you'll hear Cedric playing it, which will give you a nice variety in somebody that doesn't hit very hard and somebody that hits a little harder

 So he does tune these drums in the medium high, maybe to high range. So just keep in mind that you can go lower with the tunings. These drums in my experience and with this new version of the kit have a wide tuning range. So just keep that in mind as you see what we see on the next couple of shots

 You can lift it up, it's got a magnet on it, drop it back down. You can also fold it, yeah so you could create into a, if you get the right things, you can lift it up again, lift it up out of the way, yeah pretty cool, pretty potent in that, I like that. Then obviously over here, if I could bring the camera in, so I've got my Mapex Mars Driftwood, yeah so as you can see, wood effects finish on it, I've got, I brought these also from Dave's store, Dave and Sophie at Dave's Drums, thank you very much and Code, obviously Code, they're Code tone adapters they're called, so there's two rings you could put on the stairs, so I'll just, I'll have them off for a minute, so you've got my snare here, it's quite punchy, cut through that, I haven't got it up with, I haven't got it as high as this one, that sounds pretty, it's quite punchy, and then you can put on one head if you want, two, one dampening ring, quite fat, no fat, fat sound, quite heavy hitting, the sound is pretty tight and kicking, you know, then I'll put the other one on the other snare, on the Apollo, the Apollo if it will sit, but it's not going to sit straight because I've actually got the weight on there as well, I've lifted the weight off, very heavy, I'll put both of them on, that's quite solid, so yeah 14 by 6.5 mapex snare, so yeah really nice, looking forward to gigging those two and getting them out there and making a noise, making a racket with Funky Funks, Victoria BB, I've just joined a new band that I'm going to help out for a bit, with Tyn and Sarah, Martin and Mark, so should be pretty good, we're going to a jam night tonight and just air our wares, the Victoria Arms in Wokenham, fans are coming along, so there's the rest of my birthday money, so I managed to get some Evans EC2S heads, so I've got the 10 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch, 16 inch, Toms, 22 inch bass, just quite kicking and heavy, I haven't put my pedals on there because I'm not setting the kit up, just wanted to show you it, and yeah I've actually got this kit, the actual Mars Driftwood kit, I've got the 10, and the 12, and the 16, and over it, I've actually got them from a lovely place in Woken called Woken Drum and Percussion, with the 22 inch bass and the hardware, the mapex hardware, really nice kit, really lovely guy who runs Woken Drum and Percussion, a guy called John, very helpful, very useful, I actually went down there to pick the kit up, I was brought through in Covid, so when he opened up we went down there, spent some money and got that, then for my birthday he was able to source me the 14, because I only had those, and I've always played the 5 piece, so I thought you know what, I wanted to add an extra Tom, and I was lucky enough for John to source me the 14 inch for the kit, which I think he actually had to buy an actual kit to sell me this, which I much appreciate John, if you ever get to see this or hear it, so Woken Drum and Percussion Centre John, well done mate, fantastic, thank you very much, highly recommend them, lovely little cavern, lovely place that's got loads of drum bits, I would highly recommend him to go if you need a lot of drum pieces, new kit etc etc, Dave's Drums, I would also highly recommend him, he's got loads of different bits, kits, all sorts of things, so check him out, Dave's Drums and his lovely wife Sophie, both of you thank you very much for the code rings, obviously snare, 50 quid, 50 quid, wow, but yeah, just love it, just can't wait to actually gig it, hasn't gigged out in the new set up as yet, as we all know Covid etc etc etc, everybody's coming down this bloody cold bug thing now for some reason, even people who's had it, I heard that Charles has got it again, hey bloody ho, but

 So just a quick tour of my, obviously my Mapex Mars kit with this new edition of we have the Apollo Piccolo snare here as you can see it's a wood finish on gold. I've got this from Dave's drums over the weekend, Dave's one stop drum on the weekend, really nice sounding snare. So with that I've got the, it sort of came with the code DNA coated heads on it that David put on there on the batter. On the on the actual snare side you've got the code generic, I think it is, it's a 14 by 3

Mapex Mars Driftwood

 The bass drum in particular really is quite thunderous. I love the fact that although these are Remo's UT heads, there's a lot of response there. A very, very clear tone and clean tone which makes for musical playing. You can, thanks to the Sonic Clear heads, you can tune the pitch to exactly where you want it, where it's going to work with the particular piece of music that you're playing or the style of music that you're playing
