Worth the move to a road bike?

 Sora is perfectly utilitarian if your price point is firm and you know you need discs.

First a little bit of background - I am a heavy guy (\~210 lbs), who has been doing easy cycling for the past 4 years (50-100 miles a year, during summers) on the [Fuji sportif 1.5D](https://archive.fujibikes.com/2015/Fuji/sportif-15-disc) that I bought in 2016. This year, I am planning to crank it up and in need of a new bike. I really liked the Fuji I had, but there are certain things that I am looking for in the new bike:

* Looking for Shimano 105 groupset. Fuji had an interesting mix of sora shifters and front derailleur with Tiagra rear derailleur. I live in the greater Seattle area and there are a lot of hills here. While Sportif was okay - I want to go a little higher on the gearset and want a 105, although if I can't get that, will probably settle on Tiagra.
* Sportif had vittoria zaffiro 700 x 28c. 28 just isn't cutting it for me. I am a heavy guy and the ride is pretty stiff. Hitting pavements is a nightmare. What would be the ideal width here? 32? I don't do gravel at all - so it's pavements mixed with roads.
* I want an endurance frame that is easier to ride for hours. Planning to crank up to 50-mile rides.
* Disk brakes are important for me. It's pacific northwest and it rains a fair bit here. Wet + hills without disc brakes with a heavy body is something I am not willing to risk on.
* I am constrained on budget and don't wanna go above $1500. 

All the research that I have done until now - can't seem to find anything that matches all criteria. The closest I have found:

* [Masi Vincera Tiagra](https://www.sunandski.com/p/77210056650002110/masi-men-s-vincere-tiagra-road-bike-21). The 105 gearset on this is a whopping $500 more. Looks like a decent build, although with a 105 gearset - on expensive side. The tires are 700 \* 30c. I would have ideally liked a 32.
* [Fuji cross 1.3](https://www.the-house.com/qfucs1346cb19zz-fuji-bikes.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwu5CDBhB9EiwA0w6sLekkiGZqFvB4O8bDASFxgMI_U7ihZWfOI5Jd0paWXQfYRWYlaHCHVhoCnD8QAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds) \- several things - this has SRAM gearset. I have never used one and don't know what to compare this gearset to, and the bike seems to be heavily gravel-oriented rather than road-oriented.
* [Ribble CGR AL](https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/ribble-cgr-al-orange-shimano-105/build/#Bike) \- Gravel-oriented bike but I can customize and choose a 700 x 35c tire. Its slightly wider, but I think it works? Also, this is on the expensive side and the website doesn't describe how much the import duty is going to come to.
* Found this on [bikesdirect](http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/disc-brake-roadbikes/lechampioncf-disc-comp-discbrake-road-bikes.htm). It has 28 width tires, and from what I am a little iffy on bikesdirect.

Need Advice - Road bike under $1500

-and if I am able a 15 mile zone 2 the morning of the day before my weekend ride (16mph avg, mid 80s cadence)

I am pretty sure my issue is that I'm am muscling through that first 35, and have nothing left once the muscles are done. I usually finish with a 60 something cadence, so I know I'm just grinding to hold 22+ speed, when I try to spin I just start gapping and my heart rate goes through the roof.

 I rode around the block and it was mesmerizing. Night and day different between this one and the other bike. Felt amazing. 

For 4 years I had a Scott bike I bought here in my local store, for about $400-500. Live in south Texas. Rode everyday for a year or so, lost lots of weight. Eventually I did get bored with it, rode less and less consistently

The decision I went for my second bike.

Look for Shimano groupset (basically all of the gears, shifting, and mechanical parts put together) and below I will list their groupsets from Shimano from "worst" (the "worst" is still great and will serve you very well) to best.

 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

(I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)</p></li>

<li><p>Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be &quot;sent&quot; with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.</p></li>

<p>P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.</p>

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

I'm new to this so I know nothing about bikes except how to ride. I'm 6 foot 4 230 pounds. I don't wanna spend too much money because i don't know if I'll stick with it or not. Im wanting a bike with a super simple not flashy design. Im not gonna ride it off road.

 I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I have a Marlin 5, do not buy one if you intend to ride seriously. I have basically replaced everything on mine except the frame and let me tell you. I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).
