 I do not need the extreme resolution and ultra high quality for I only really have used the front facing camera. That is basically it, just looking for something under two hundred dollars if possible, if not than three hundred and under is still an option.

It won't be used much outside of that, I won't be traveling with it or using it outdoors. I know smartphones are basically that as I have an A42 Samsung with a bluetooth controller, which I may be getting rid of so I would like the same functionality in a stand-alone camera. I do not need the extreme resolution and ultra high quality for I only really have used the front facing camera.  I turned off adaptive brightness and that did not fix the issue. What happens is when I am browsing the net or on youtube, the screen will seem to dim down then get bright and fluctuate.

I have a Samsung a42 5g that I bought from Verizon and it has a weird display issue and color-shifting problem. From what I read this is not the only model of Samsung phones that have this issue. I turned off adaptive brightness and that did not fix the issue. What happens is when I am browsing the net or on youtube, the screen will seem to dim down then get bright and fluctuate

 All I care about is reception, battery life, and basic smartphone functionality. The bells and whistles are nice, but they don't decide a purchase. I usually shoot for $150, so this was a splurge. My first foray into Samsung after sticking with Motorola since my first smartphone

 Battery life is great. Bought it refurbished and the quality of the phone for the price I paid is unbeatable. The fingerprint reader is finicky compared to Motorola, but I have simply saved multiple profiles, which has helped in that regard.

I am not on any phone contracts. I am about 5 years behind the curve and run a phone into the ground. All I care about is reception, battery life, and basic smartphone functionality. The bells and whistles are nice, but they don't decide a purchase

 As night mode on, the FE's ultrawide is flat out superior to the S20 Plus, with consistently better sharpness. When zooming at night with the telephoto, the FE produces better results as well, with improved detail, lower noise, and wider dynamic range than the S20 Plus. The difference isn't as pronounced with night mode on though. Both produce some pretty good photos

 Overall, it looks elegant, though you will notice that the bag is made of plastic here, not premium Gorilla Glass. The frame is aluminum though, and you still get full IP68 water and dust resistance you'd expect from a high-end Samsung phone. On the front is a flat 6.5 inch Super AMOLED display with a small punch hole for the selfie cam

 The resolution is a bit lower than the regular S20 at 1080p, but it still brings that fast 120Hz refresh rate. And it's worth noting that if you turn the regular S20's display to its fast 120Hz refresh rate, its resolution will dial down to 1080p as well. The high refresh rate makes scrolling and moving elements on screen look much smoother to the eye. It isn't adaptive to content like some other solutions we've seen though

 We had a less than pleasant experience from the ultrawide though. The frame rate isn't steady with the stabilization on, and you get some jerky movement every now and then. The telephoto is somewhere in between. The frame rate is constant, but is still a little shaky

Google's Pixel 4a is a budget version of the now-discontinued Pixel 4, but it retains almost all of what made that phone good. The Pixel 4a has Google’s clean, fast version of Android 10 with three years of guaranteed updates. It also offers camera performance that’s better than what you’d get with phones that cost three times as much. However, the Pixel 4a isn’t quite as fast as the Pixel 4a 5G or Galaxy S20 FE. On top of that, it doesn’t offer wireless charging, and the plastic body isn’t water resistant. It does, however, have a headphone jack.


There is also the Google Pixel 4a 5G, it looks like a blown-up Pixel 4a, and it runs the same excellent version of Android with guaranteed updates through fall 2023. It also has a faster processor, bigger screen, longer battery life, and a dual-camera setup on the back. You might want to buy this over the 4a for the display and better battery life, but it’s not worth spending more money just to get 5G right now.

However the Pixel 4a 5G sports a 3,885mAh battery which is important for you so I'd recommend the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE which has 4,500mAh battery.

It’s a good upgrade if you want a bigger screen, wireless charging, or improved gaming performance compared with the Pixel 4a 5G.


The S20 FE has almost all the same high-end specs as the S20s released in early 2020, but it costs hundreds of dollars less. The processor and 6 GB of RAM keep it responsive even if you’re playing 3D games or keep a lot of apps running in the background. Samsung didn’t even skimp on extras like water resistance and wireless charging—the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and OnePlus 8T don’t have either. The S20 FE has a matte plastic back instead of glass, but it does come in several fun colors. (The model I have is one of the more boring colors: navy.)

With its 6.5-inch 1080p OLED screen, the S20 FE offers a considerably larger screen than the Pixel 4a, but it’s not ideal for one-handed use. Like all of Samsung’s OLEDs, the screen is bright and vibrant, and you even get a 120 Hz refresh rate that makes animations exceptionally smooth like more expensive S20 phones. The S20 FE uses an in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone or authorize within apps, and it’s just as fast and accurate as other S20 phones. OnePlus and Google have faster fingerprint recognition, though.

The S20 FE runs the same version of Android 10 as other recent Samsung phones, named One UI. I don’t like One UI as much as Google’s Pixel version or OnePlus’s Oxygen OS because it’s more cluttered and less intuitive, but it’s not a dealbreaker, and the high-end hardware keeps the phone feeling responsive even with heavy multitasking and gaming. Samsung promises three years of monthly security updates on the S20 FE, which is matched only by Google. However, Samsung is slower to release major OS updates like Android 11, which should come to the S20 FE in late 2020 or early 2021.


There are three cameras on the back of the S20 FE, giving you more shooting options than Google’s phones: wide, ultrawide, and telephoto. The telephoto is only 3x zoom, but that’s more than you’ll get from either Pixel 4a version or even the more expensive S20 and S20+ from early 2020. The FE drops the 8K video recording option from the more expensive S20 versions, but this is more pixels than you can even display on most of the screens that you own. Samsung’s image processing favors longer exposures and pumped-up colors, which doesn’t offer the best experience in low-light situations. Google’s camera performance remains better overall, even at half the price.


Edit: The Pixel 5 is the “best” Pixel phone you can buy, but it’s too expensive for what you get. The camera setup works well, but it’s identical to the 4a 5G. It also has the same Snapdragon 765 processor and software as the cheaper Pixel phones. The Pixel 5 gains water resistance, wireless charging, and a 90 Hz display, but that’s not enough to justify the $700 price tag. That’s the same as the S20 FE and twice as much as the Pixel 4a, which is almost as good in most ways.

<div class="md"><p>Google&#39;s Pixel 4a is a budget version of the now-discontinued Pixel 4, but it retains almost all of what made that phone good. The Pixel 4a has Google’s clean, fast version of Android 10 with three years of guaranteed updates. It also offers camera performance that’s better than what you’d get with phones that cost three times as much. However, the Pixel 4a isn’t quite as fast as the Pixel 4a 5G or Galaxy S20 FE. On top of that, it doesn’t offer wireless charging, and the plastic body isn’t water resistant. It does, however, have a headphone jack.</p>

<p>There is also the Google Pixel 4a 5G, it looks like a blown-up Pixel 4a, and it runs the same excellent version of Android with guaranteed updates through fall 2023. It also has a faster processor, bigger screen, longer battery life, and a dual-camera setup on the back. You might want to buy this over the 4a for the display and better battery life, but it’s not worth spending more money just to get 5G right now.</p>

<p>However the Pixel 4a 5G sports a 3,885mAh battery which is important for you so I&#39;d recommend the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE which has 4,500mAh battery.</p>

<p>A bigger, more powerful Android phone.</p>

<p>The huge, 6.5-inch OLED screen offers vibrant colors, deep blacks, and a high refresh rate to make animations smoother. The Galaxy S20 FE has one of the fastest processors available and will get three years of guaranteed OS updates, but the Android software isn’t as good as Google’s version.</p>

<p>If you need a bigger screen than is offered by any of the Pixel models but don’t want to spend over $1,000 on a phone, buy the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition). This device has a spacious 6.5-inch 1080p display that refreshes 120 times per second (120 Hz), which makes scrolling and navigating through apps look impressively smooth. The processor is top-of-the-line, which means the S20 FE works better with heavy multitasking and gaming compared with the Pixel phones. Samsung’s take on Android can be clunky and confusing when up against Google’s streamlined Pixel version, but Samsung does promise three years of updates like Google, though major system updates do take longer to reach Samsung’s phones. The S20 FE currently runs Android 10, but it should have the latest Android 11 soon.</p>

<p>It’s a good upgrade if you want a bigger screen, wireless charging, or improved gaming performance compared with the Pixel 4a 5G.</p>

<p>The S20 FE has almost all the same high-end specs as the S20s released in early 2020, but it costs hundreds of dollars less. The processor and 6 GB of RAM keep it responsive even if you’re playing 3D games or keep a lot of apps running in the background. Samsung didn’t even skimp on extras like water resistance and wireless charging—the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and OnePlus 8T don’t have either. The S20 FE has a matte plastic back instead of glass, but it does come in several fun colors. (The model I have is one of the more boring colors: navy.)</p>

<p>With its 6.5-inch 1080p OLED screen, the S20 FE offers a considerably larger screen than the Pixel 4a, but it’s not ideal for one-handed use. Like all of Samsung’s OLEDs, the screen is bright and vibrant, and you even get a 120 Hz refresh rate that makes animations exceptionally smooth like more expensive S20 phones. The S20 FE uses an in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone or authorize within apps, and it’s just as fast and accurate as other S20 phones. OnePlus and Google have faster fingerprint recognition, though.</p>

<p>The S20 FE runs the same version of Android 10 as other recent Samsung phones, named One UI. I don’t like One UI as much as Google’s Pixel version or OnePlus’s Oxygen OS because it’s more cluttered and less intuitive, but it’s not a dealbreaker, and the high-end hardware keeps the phone feeling responsive even with heavy multitasking and gaming. Samsung promises three years of monthly security updates on the S20 FE, which is matched only by Google. However, Samsung is slower to release major OS updates like Android 11, which should come to the S20 FE in late 2020 or early 2021.</p>

<p>There are three cameras on the back of the S20 FE, giving you more shooting options than Google’s phones: wide, ultrawide, and telephoto. The telephoto is only 3x zoom, but that’s more than you’ll get from either Pixel 4a version or even the more expensive S20 and S20+ from early 2020. The FE drops the 8K video recording option from the more expensive S20 versions, but this is more pixels than you can even display on most of the screens that you own. Samsung’s image processing favors longer exposures and pumped-up colors, which doesn’t offer the best experience in low-light situations. What I will use it for: 
Music (Spotify), I want to play emulator games (just Pokémon, nothing crazy), some picture taking. 

What’s important: good battery life- a shitty battery is my biggest pet peeve. 

This is my first android, so something that’s kind of user friendly would be nice.

 And the S20 FE even boasts the same full IP68 water and dust resistance as those flagships as well, so you can take a full on dunking in a bath sink, whatever. So on the Jason Statham Toughboy scale, this bad boy definitely gets at least a four. My only real complaint here is that the S20 FE 5G feels like a cheapy mid-range smartphone rather than something that costs 700 quid. That's an unfortunate but not particularly unsurprising consequence of the galactic finish, which mostly, to be fair, just feels like plastic

 And around front as well, super, super safe, because not only do you have Gorilla Glass 3 coating this thing, but you've also got a pre-installed screen protector. Although speaking of which, that screen protector is getting proper banged up now, which is starting to annoy me, so that's probably going to come off pretty pronto. And the S20 FE even boasts the same full IP68 water and dust resistance as those flagships as well, so you can take a full on dunking in a bath sink, whatever.  And the night mode also does a great job in low light, producing bright and crisp snaps, with impressively natural looking tones. The S20 FE 5G also supports a 12MP ultra wide angle lens, which lets in less light and so produces darker images. It's next to useless indoors, but it does add some flexibility when you're outdoors. And I actually found that Samsung's telephoto lens was more capable here on the fan edition versus the S21, as you get a proper 3x optical zoom

 And last up is that 32MP selfie snapper, which can offer quite a wide view if you want to squeeze a few peeps into frame, and you've once again got those portrait mode smarts on board too. On the whole, a solid effort, although occasionally when shooting against a bright background I did end up looking a wee bit soft, so to speak. So there's what I think of Samsung's Galaxy S20 fan edition 5G model three months after it was first released here in the UK, gotta say I really, really like it, it does have some very strong competition, especially from the likes of Xiaomi's new Mi 11 flagship phone, which upgrades the specs to a Snapdragon 888. We got the sharper QHD display and everything as well, and all for about the same sort of price point
