In addition to its weight, the surge suffers from several unfortunate design flaws. When the exterior blades are open, the thin, angular sheet metal on the handle digs into your hand painfully. It's not problem if you're wearing gloves, but on bare hands the ergonomics are honestly awful. This means that if you plan on using a knife a lot, you should carry a secondary folder

The knife is sharp out of the box & larger than the ones that come on Leatherman tools. The bit driver is sturdy and is compatible with my all my bit collection in my tool box. I wish the tool was a bit lighter and also included scissors like my a Wave. While the tool does include a nylon sheath that accommodates the bit set, the belt loops are too big and flimsy so it can't handle the weight of the tool in the horizontal position

I had a Surge that i bought a few years ago that was stolen last year, this new one is a replacement, and I am very disapointed in the sheath. My other one had a very nice leather sheath, this sheath is junk. I have had it 5 days, and it is already showing wear. It hangs to high on my belt and is hard to pull the replace the tool

My one issue with the sheath is that it sticks out quite a bit ( But this is to be expected from a heavy duty tool like this ). Also when I compare it with my Swiss Army multi, it seems a bit flimsy. If you are looking for an EDC type tool (That's a little on the heavy side and bulky but full of features ) THIS IS IT!. But all this beauty comes with a price: at just a little over a hundred dollars it wouldn't be everybody's cup of tea

By comparison, the Wave weighs 8-1/2 ounces. In the hand the Surge is much heavier and beefier than the Wave. For the trade-off of those 4 ounces you get an awl and blade exchanger and you give up the small eye-glass screwdriver that is on the Wave. The blade exchanger is nice, you can use any t-shank blade that you can get at any hardware store and that gives you the ability to carry a relatively large saw blade for emergencies

The knife blade works great, I love the Center Driver itself, it works really well for any MT, and the pliers deploy out very smooth and feel solid. The only reason I have removed one star was because I felt the sheath was lacking in equal awesomeness. I'm not a huge fan of it because its super basic and nothing too great like the new Sheath Gerber just released, that should have been included for sure instead. Anyhow I have a similar Gerber sheath that I have never used before and its Coyote Brown and like it more so i've been using that and it works great

5" handles and longer knives. This is truly a toolbox on your hip, and has the largest selection of tools that Leatherman offers (21). I've carried the Surge for 2+ years after receiving it as a Christmas gift, and I've used it on camping trips, on the work site doing environmental restoration, and also frequently in the theater doing set construction. The tool has held up admirably over the years, without too much wear and tear that would reduce its usability

the screwdriver is the main reason i got it and works great no complaints. now the not so great, the flick open trick is nice when you get it right but by design the tool is going to stick when it gets dirty and who hasn't dropped there tool is the mud/sand/ect. it will come out of it after some cleaning time, the pry bar is small and akward and bends more than what you are trying to bend with it, the real reason for this review is the replaceable cutters in the pliers is a great feature except when they break into pieces after trying to strip 12 gauge wire and you look to find the replacements are 23 US $ a set and i am not the only one with issues after finding reviews after the fact. it is clearly a design flaw using hardened cutters and gerber should not be charging for a fix

Is the chain link fence made of pipe cleaners? It most likely won't cut it. However, harbor freight sells tiny bolt cutters for cheap. You're probably better off with a specific tool than a multitool in this instance, but if you really wanted to get it done with a multitool you'd need a full sized one. Good candidates include Gerber mp600 or Leatherman Surge

This isn’t the review of “OH, it’s pretty and it’s new!!!” This is the review after two years of use. Generally speaking, I’m a Leatherman guy. I got my first Leatherman (the original PST) when I was 10. Now that was and is a high quality, well made tool

This is probably going to displace my Leatherman Surge. While I like the one hand opening blades on the Surge, the minor flaws and quality issues are a bit annoying. The Swisstool appears to be better quality for less money.

It's a GOOD VALUE I don't want to understate that. It's made to be lighter. Despite it's light weight it's quite durable. I keep hoping it'll wear out so I can spend a LOT more for a Leatherman, and have to buy the belt holster and extra bits separately, to boot

The second black Surge arrived and it was obviously in new condition. Much better! The handles opened perfectly. Another step up! Unfortunately, the pliers would not engage. I was on the verge of sending this one back and ordering the stainless steel instead

Tool shopping without trying stuff out can be tough. I might recommended checking a local REI or Cabela’s because they often will let you handle a multi tool before buying! Your hands will notice plenty that your eyes won’t, you can believe me on that
