I'd look at the Kona Dew series instead of the Treks. For a bigger guy that isn't racing I'd want a wider tire, and the FX surely doesn't give you that. The Checkpoint is a good gravel bike, but it comes with (barely adequate) 28 spoke wheels that are really too narrow for the wider tires you'll want to run.

I come to you today seeking your collective advice. This is a throwaway account for obvious reasons.

I’m a 34 year old male, a former smoker for 20 years (*I quit two months ago!*),  and am overweight. I’m 6’ and roughly 240lbs. I’m strongly considering  getting into cycling to lose this weight. For reference I’ve been  overweight since I was 16.

I live  in Colorado. Most of my biking will be on cement, asphalt, and some dirt  roads. I don’t intend to try anything “mountainous” for the time being –  but would like to be able to tackle some beginner trails eventually. I  also intend to use it to commute to work (about ½ mile each way). I plan  on getting a trunk mounted bike carrier for my car so I can go places.

I’m  trying to find a bike and from what I’ve read I’m either looking at a  “Hybrid” or a “Gravel” bike. The two that have caught my eye, if I’m on  the right track here, are the Checkpoint ALR 4 and the FX Sport Carbon  4. Both of these bikes are made by TREK.

What  do you all recommend? Or am I too big for these bikes? Should I be  looking for a different kind of bike? I have not climbed on a bike for,  like, 18+ years.

I suggest it a lot in here, but the Kona Dew sounds like it fits what you’re looking for. They also have the Coco that may even be more the style you are looking for. They have big, fast rolling, and comfortable tires

Basically what I’m searching for is a bike that’s very comfortable to ride but isn’t painfully slow or heavy. Ideally I want to be able to use it for exercise and for commuting to somewhere like a store. I’m really fond of Dutch style upright bicycles but i know they are super heavy and are not very fast. I’m looking for something in between that and a more traditional road bike that would be more lightweight and quicker. The roads here where I live are relatively flat, but are designed specifically for cars so space for walking and biking is quite limited. Ideally i’d like to keep it under 750$ but i will go as high as 1000$

looking for an entry level bike that is a good mixture of comfort and performance. (&lt;1000$)

I think Kona Dew range is the best combo of quality and value for money for 650b commuter bike. Would definitely recommend.

Prefer under 25lbs if possible.  Would also like disk brakes.  

Why do I want 650b tires?  I want a cushy ride and a lower stand over height.  So far, I’ve considered the Kona Dew plus.  

Budget $850. I don’t mind getting a used bike to stay in budget.

1, the Marin Fairfax 1 or 2, and the Kona Dew. I've also been interested in some 20-year old or so used bikes rebuilt by a local bike shop, though their stock is limited. For comfort, I hear a steel frame would be good, but new bikes in my price range with a steel frame seem scarce.
