 I really think that having a built-in battery would for me have pushed the digitone from a really really great device to one of my favorites. It is really really great. Don'T get me wrong, but i've found that having to plug it in is just like an extra step that i feel like stands between me and making music on it and i'm more likely to reach for something like the deluge or the yamaha qy. 70

The heat death of the universe is approaching on schedule, so we have to be discerning customers when it comes to buying music gear, and to that end i wanted to talk about the electron digitone and whether i think it's worth its asking price, which, at the time That i was writing the script for this. Video was at around 650 at the lowest

 The first thing is that, while it is fine to like want a device like this, neither you nor i need the electron digitone to make music. If you're new to or thinking about getting into music production, i would suggest instead, starting with a daw and some free synth plugins. I'Ve made a video about it, shameless self promotion, and that way you can get started without syncing like a lot of money into it, and then god forbid, finding out that you bought a device that just totally does not suit you, and the second thing is that Is it worth it and is it good, are totally different questions? I think the electron digitone is completely amazing, but is it 650 worth of amazing? The answer is going to vary depending on the person and that's why we're going to talk about it? The first thing that i noticed about the digitone, even before i turned it on, was that the build quality is really really phenomenal. The chassis is made out of metal, the buttons are all really nice and clicky, and the knobs have the perfect amount of resistance to them

 When the digitone is turned on, you can see the screen, which is really nice and sharp and beautiful unless you hate the color yellow. As far as sound goes, the digitone is a much different beast from an analog or analog modeling synthesizer you can get warm sounds out of it, but in my experience the digitone's happy space seems to be more cold and metallic and experimental. The digitone uses fm synthesis, which is a method of sound generation whereby you have sine waves that you hear, which are called carriers sine waves that you don't, which are called modulators, and you use the modulators to modulate. I'M saying the word modulate a lot

Is The Elektron Digitone Worth It?

While I do still love good analog bass, I've started exploring FM synthesis as a bass instrument. My go-to now is the Elektron Digitone, but I've also used the Volca FM for this. There's a quality to FM as bass that is really gripping and exciting to me, perhaps because the sound is just less familiar.

Have you played with sequencing the 3 osc on the Volca Bass independently? That plus some portamento makes a pretty unique sound. Can't be done over MIDI unfortunately, so it's usefulness is limited.

I agree that the Volca Bass is pretty 'basic' (ha, get it?). So that's when I use it, when I want a classic bass sound.

So the Volca series is becoming somewhat of a classic, and the Bass is really a gem for a beginner. But after a while it underperforms and is to dull and limited (for me at least). I was pondering on where to go next without setting my bank account on fire. my 2 best options were the Waldorf Rocket and the Korg Monologue. Both really nice, much more versitile than the Volca, but I really couldn't decide.   


eventually, I went for Korg again, and I'm loving every minute of it. That lil oscilloscope is the sutest thing and it just sounds really really good. I found the monologue to be richer and more versitile, which is perfect for a main/base mono synth in a full setup. I find the Rocket to be more of a special tool that you can use to dazzle the listener with, but it had less basic features, which made it a bit hard to rely on.

Where you should go after you're done with the Volca Bass:

I’d image you buy one and learn it then the other adds a nice upgrade and both can sit nicely in the corner of a room with some headphones?

 What i experienced by using such a limited setup is that i really at first try to make all these sounds really stand out and to make them sound. The best that it's possible, but also that, due to the reason that i have only these sounds available, or only four tracks available, they cut very much more through the mix and really um yeah you get all their delay sounds all of their reverb sounds um. You just hear a lot more of these sounds and what they are doing and the mix doesn't end up too muddy. And i i myself find it easier to master the whole thing and to do the mix down just within the digitone and then just go straight to the mastering process and to get some results that i really like and that i can share with the community

 Sometimes i use two leads. Sometimes i use two arps, but that's in general, the setup and um.  That'S always changing, and this way you can bring a lot of interest to your music reason. Number three is general sound and connectivity. I think the digitone as a whole sounds just really really good as a synthesizer, no matter, if you just use the regular outs or if you use the headphone out or if you use it via overbridge but um, it really really has a great sound character and Something that is good to use in so many different ways you can, for example, craft very great melodic sounds on the diggy tone. You can also craft very, very great percussive sounds you also have great sounding effects that i really like

 Reason number four on my list is sound design. I think the sound design options that you have on the digitone are really really great. Of course, this device cannot be also due to its form factor. It cannot be compared, for example, to a dx7, but apart from that, i think the sound synthesis engine in all is limited, but really really intelligent

He's tried just about every piece of sampling gear over the years and arrived at the 707. For the price point there's definitely more bang for your buck than the 101 and the 6s. However, his advice to me is always "do everything you can with what you have and only upgrade gear if it's holding you back."

I recently got a TR-6s and MC-101 a couple weeks apart and while I like them both a lot (especially the TR-6s), I can’t help but thinking an MC-707 for $100 more would be a better route. I know I’d be losing out on the ACB, but the added functionality in the 707 (mainly the sampler) might be worth it in my eyes. For anyone that upgraded from the 101 or currently uses both, did you find anything you didn’t like about the workflow on the 707? Everything I’ve watched seems like it’s just less pressing of the shift button to get to certain functions although I could be missing something. Not gonna lie, parting with the TR-6s would be hard but I couldn’t justify keeping it and the 707 if I went that route.

I make music as a hobby and like the idea of a single unit with everything in it. I know I’ll want a sampler again at some point, and getting one with my current setup would put me well over the cost of an MC-707 by itself but also might be more functional (I’ve been eying a black box or the new circuit rhythm). I don’t have much experience with sound design so that part of the 707 isn’t a huge factor, but at the same time it could be a way for me to experiment and see if I like it. Any input or similar experiences is appreciated.

TR-6s and MC-101 vs MC-707 by itself

Great for the on-the-couch experience, extremely deep synth engine, lots of on-board ROM sounds, very solid sampling abilities (though not multisampling), slicing for percussion samples, velocity sensitive pads, multiple effects sections, easy resampling, constant updates, weird (but useful) scatter function, good sequencer, a so-called looper with timestretch, handy faders, assignable knobs... overall, despite a few limitations, it's still pretty good
