[MOD] The Daily Question Thread

As you mentioned the biggest problem is setting up the grind size is a pain, hard to get the point zero, hard to adjust a grind size and even if you do it becomes loosely after 2-3 grinds so you have to adjust it again. I switched to Commandante C40 3 months ago and can't describe the use of easiness with words. On the other hand, Hario Skerton is £27 one of the cheapest hand grinders on the market and can give you some time to understand the coffee, different grind sizes etc.

So I recently bought a hand-grinder (Hario Skerton) to start experimenting with my Aeropress brews at home. I had read great reviews, but none of them mentioned how inconvenient the process of setting up the grind size on this thing is. You have to remove the cover, screw/nut, handle and another prong thingy before you can see the actual grind adjusting nut. After that, you have to tighten or loosen the sharp metal ridges with your bare fingers. It just seems so unsophisticated, and in case of tightening, a bit painful too.

Thinking of returning this and getting a Hario mini instead. Any reasons to keep the Skerton Plus instead?

 Let's first talk about the design and then we'll get into the performance and how the coffee tastes. The Commandante looks pretty minimalist and more or less like the platonic ideal of a manual coffee grinder. There's a bunch of different color ways. You can also get a few models wrapped in a wood veneer, but personally, I was never really into that look

 The Mach 1 was never a big success. It had a few problems, so when people talk about the Commandant, they are most likely referring to the C40 Mark Iii, which has become what you could almost call the gold standard of manual grinders. Let's first talk about the design and then we'll get into the performance and how the coffee tastes. The Commandante looks pretty minimalist and more or less like the platonic ideal of a manual coffee grinder

Comandante C40 review

 With a good sized oakwood pommel and wood veneer wrap. To the outside, the Commandante achieves small textural details like the not etched or lasered but burnt into the Wood Commandante logo that adds to the grinder's remarkable impression. The Mk4 comes with two screw-on grinds catches, one a clear polymer glass jar and the other regular glass in amber with one lid shared between them and these can hold the full capacity to the grinder. These jars stand out for so many reasons that are often overlooked on the Commandante

 Link up here and this upgrades your standard Commandante grinder where it essentially then doubles your grind settings, so in turn it will double the range you have for espresso brewing. So with the common Dante out of the box as is, it has an espresso range of say, 7 to 12 clicks or 5 grind settings. Then add the Red Clicks upgrade and this will boost that range and become 14 to 24 with 10 grind settings to choose from. And then you could still probably adjust it one or two clicks, course or a finer and still get good results

 Now you might notice there's no little red o-ring Now to get lost on the Mk4, either. wipe everything down with a dry cloth and then it's fairly simple to reassemble. You'll want to do this regularly to stop any build up from fine coffee particles, and that's the Commandante C40 Mk4 nitro blade for you Now Commandante continue to produce high quality hand grinders with the Mk4, and even with many other grinders being released in the last few years competing in this space offering their own unique features, I'm not sure this really impacts the admirable performance and value you get with a common Dante Grinder, and I believe there is still plenty on offer in using one and brewing great coffee. And it's still up there and it has been for a very long time as one of the very best hand grinders that money can buy

I think it is best to invest in decent material. Otherwise, cheap quickly becomes expensive. If you do not have the means at the moment, postpone your purchase or use pre-ground coffee from a shop in your neighbourhood that grinds its coffee locally.

 3) the grind is very uneven. the burr is loose, not fixed, and chunks of beans get stuck here and there. i was really really surprised about this. i see that other people rigged cardboard/glue solutions, but that seems almost insulting for a grinder of this price & of this nice stainless build

 2) repeatable grind sizes are near impossible--not marked, no system to figure out how large or small the grind will be, except by trial and error. that's a waste of time and beans. 3) the grind is very uneven. the burr is loose, not fixed, and chunks of beans get stuck here and there

 For the same grind setting on both, I tend to get many more disappointing large fragments of coffee beans with the Porlex, and yet the Aeropress brew I make still isn't as clean as is made with the Zassenhaus. Overall, the actual taste of the coffee made with the Zassenhaus is noticeably better (but by a small amount, to be clear): sweeter and more prominent in characteristic flavor notes. This comparison was done right after I cleaned, dried, and ran a couple beans through to "season" the grinder, and after tweaking different aspects such as water temperature and grind setting on both for a couple weeks.  In the end, the burrs on the Porlex prevent me from giving it five stars

  This all comes with one big, important caveat, however.  While I appreciate the ceramic burrs, and while it may be true that they stay sharp longer than stainless steel, as I've heard more than once, they do not do as good of a job as the steel burrs on my Zassenhaus. For the same grind setting on both, I tend to get many more disappointing large fragments of coffee beans with the Porlex, and yet the Aeropress brew I make still isn't as clean as is made with the Zassenhaus. Overall, the actual taste of the coffee made with the Zassenhaus is noticeably better (but by a small amount, to be clear): sweeter and more prominent in characteristic flavor notes

Almost perfect: my comparison between this widely-available grinder and one that's slightly better.

Easy to do while the Keurig is warming up. - Pour grounds into your reusable k-cup, brew, and enjoy!  Yea, it's a little pricey, but well worth not having to deal with problems of the low-quality manual grinders

 I have since been using ground coffee in reusable k-cups, which is a much tastier brew. Then finally, I wanted to move to fresh ground whole bean coffee, to enjoy real coffee as it was meant to be.  At first I looked for an electric grinder - a burr grinder, not those imprecise blades. The problem is that they were all too big; designed for brewing pots of coffee, not a single cup

 Easy to do while the Keurig is warming up. - Pour grounds into your reusable k-cup, brew, and enjoy!  Yea, it's a little pricey, but well worth not having to deal with problems of the low-quality manual grinders. Definitely recommended for the serious, one cup at a time, k-cup, coffee addict.

After all, my Bosch works quickly, produces smooth grind, and doesn't heat up all that much. I suppose when the motor gives up the ghost i will switch to an electric burr grinder.  Meanwhile, I bought the Porlex Mini after deciding I also wanted a small, manual coffee grinder for travel or camping or maybe to take to work, when i want to treat myself to a good cup of coffee made with freshly ground beans. Despite my loyalty to my trusty Bosch blade grinder, I did notice that beans freshly ground in the Porlex Mini and NOT heated up at all by the electric grinder do taste better

  For home use, I'm cheap and can't seem to find a reason to replace my old Bosch blade grinder I've had for about 30 years, and can't really complain about the taste of my coffee...

  Meanwhile, I bought the Porlex Mini after deciding I also wanted a small, manual coffee grinder for travel or camping or maybe to take to work, when i want to treat myself to a good cup of coffee made with freshly ground beans. Despite my loyalty to my trusty Bosch blade grinder, I did notice that beans freshly ground in the Porlex Mini and NOT heated up at all by the electric grinder do taste better. And mainly, they smell better! I like a very fine grind, between espresso and Turkish, and this grinder does the trick (had to actually back off the setting from the finest because the grinds were just a bit too fine and temporarily jammed up the filter in the Espresso maker).  Directions for the Porlex Mini are in Japanese, but it's pretty intuitive to change the burr setting to get a finer or coarser grind
