Love them or hate them, electric bikes are here to stay, and Cannondale’s first go at a gravel-focused model was a huge success in our opinion. After spending some time on the Synapse NEO SE, we came away extremely impressed by the bike’s smooth acceleration, confidence-inspiring ride, and quality build. While the electric Synapse will only assist up to 20 miles per hour (similar to all class 1 e-bikes), this was enough of a grin-maker for even the most skeptical riders among us. You do pay a steep premium for the Bosch drive unit and 500Wh battery, but it’s a boon for daylong enjoyment on remote backroads.

As is the case with all e-bikes, the Cannondale’s battery and motor are very heavy (the Synapse NEO SE weighs in at a hefty 40+ pounds). If you plan to transport your e-bike with any regularity, it’s important to consider the weight limit of your rack and your ability to lift and load the bike. Another issue is power: if you run out of juice on the trail, it’ll be a slow and difficult ride back to your car. And finally, e-bike laws still are evolving and changing, so it’s important to know the rules before you head out.  Give me all the comfort i need when doing three or four hour rides. I, like the fact you have a two piece, aero handlebar and stem i like the shape of the tops and the drops and the bar tape is really comfy as well especially running out. Gloves when it's warm enough, which is at the moment crazy climate change uh to thank for that and on this bike to use the smart sense and particularly the radar, you use your own computer, either garmin or wahoo, which most are compatible now with the garmin vario Radar, low models use a device on a handlebars that doesn't have a computer, gives you a simple readout of a car approaching so different levels of technology based on your experience, but most people buying a bike of this price range, probably have their own computer, their own Preference for a computer so at least they haven't, given you a computer as standard with a bike, but maybe they could, in the future, develop their own or partner with garmin or wahoo or another brand, to give you a built-in computer, but is that a move too Far, probably we have been there before our bike's, giving a smart capabilities of bikes. So at least you have your own computer to fit to the bike

 Okay time. To sum up all my thoughts and observations of riding the new bike for the last two weeks into one concise, succinct verdict for you to take away today, only it's not so easy and there is a tale of two halves on a plus side. I love the performance of a new frame, the handling, the comfort, the speed, much faster than the old bike, much more engaging, much more dynamic to ride, and we have some nice details like an external threaded bottom bracket, a regular seat, post and semi internal cable routing. So those are all a win, but on the downside we have a technology that you can't remove from the bike and that wouldn't be a problem if the technology worked extremely well and worked as good as aftermarket solution

 So this new bike has some big shoes to feel and has it filled them? Oh, yes, it has. Oh, my goodness me, this bike is just phenomenal. What a package it's even faster, even more exciting, even more dynamic to ride. Yes, it's still just as comfy as the old bike, with the same relaxed geometry gives you a higher position than a race bike and a really short footage and planted in high speed situations

Should you buy a 2022 Cannondale Synapse with integrated lights and radar?

 But it's one that we, the cyclist editorial team, all agreed that cannondale synapse has always managed to deliver expertly. So the last time this particular synapse was updated was back in 2017 and that was tall intended purposes. Just a disc brake makeover for its predecessor, because, ultimately, that bike, which was launched back in 2013, was arguably quite a way ahead of its competitors. In terms of the features it was already showcasing um some eight years ago i mean that bike already had a lot of integration of components

 So it could be in the knicker time too, because i'll be honest, whilst this synapse did run out as unanimous winner in our head-to-head best of the best competition for the endurance bike sector. You know the competition is growing ever stronger in this category. So what were those key details that stood out for us that enabled the synapse to just edge out its competitors? So something i think, cannondale has really done well with the design of the synapse, was the way in which it's interpreted the endurance sector, and i think what i mean by that is some of its competitors have maybe over egged that comfort element by having really tall Front ends very relaxed geometry, long, wheelbases and adding in those actual moving active suspension systems and so on, and what that can do if you're, not careful is always the danger of making your bike feel certainly heavier, but even a bit languid in its handling and responsiveness And ultimately, sort of robbing the bike of speed. And yet it's speed that most cyclists all measure themselves and compare themselves by whether that's giving a mate to kicking up the local climbs or getting a gold award in a grand, fondo or perhaps even just riding, to work faster

 I don't know, but here's that sweet spot, that we're looking for really well so there we have it. The cannondale synapse undeniably one of the most prevalent endurance, road bikes of the current era and one that we feel epitomizes this genre importantly not by following others, but by treading its own path and delivering what is expected of it in a clean and unfussy way. It would have been very easy for cannondale to ensure the synapses success by just using lessons learned from the brilliant supersix evo and the system 6 to produce their modernized synapse. It seems that wasn't on cannondale's agenda for the 2022 model, whereas previous incarnations in the synapse kept a more race-like bike design. With this new version, they've shifted far more to a real world, rider integrated lights and even a new cannondale specific version of garmin's underrated

 Changes are all about making the bike easy to live with it. For goes complex, internal routine, that's become commonplace on pretty much. Every modern road bike in favor of a simpler routine through a large port in the downtube they've, also moved away from the integrated seat. Clamp evolved in favor of a standard, alloy ring binder and slotted seat tube

 The new synapse rightfully keeps its place as one of the best endurance bikes around it's up there with the likes of specialized roubaix giants, dufy and cevallos caledonia. It'S handling meets what i love about great road bikes that compelling mix of sure footage stability and fast handling.  It'S clearly um something top of the list of priorities for an adventure bike, but we'll get into performance in the little moment. But let's flip the bike around and show you some other cool details on this bike. Turning the bike around, we can see some really well thought out. Features that show specialized have done their homework

 So you effectively have a longer bike, but with a short stem, giving you nice handling. So when you're riding very steep terrain, you have more weight behind the front wheel, so you're not as pitched over the front wheel as you are on a more road-based geometry and just give you a much calmer, much more stable, feel in those rowdy rough corners. When a normal bike might be bucked off the saddle, this bike lets you carry more speed and carry more confidence into those sections where you can be challenged to get the bike down cleanly. So the geometry is a real asset, nice and calm at high speed, nice and stable

 The right clothing is really important at the time of year. To keep you warm and dry on a bike and that's a neat segue to the sponsor of today's video giro.  So a lot of my trails are sort of flowing they're they're, not particularly technical. There are some drops, there's some rooty ones, but most of them are sort of wide open, fast trails that you just kind of hold on, and you can let a rip, and you can especially do that with this bike and again, that's because it feels really really In control - and i think that's a really important aspect of this - that when you're riding those trails you can just get in the drop, so you can hold on to the huds and you don't need to be on the brakes, because the bike gives you the confidence That it will smash along really well in a straight line and that's exactly what it does. So. Stability is both great at high speed, but i have also noticed that sometimes the diverge can be a bit laborious when you're trying to make a tight turn or get up and over some, particularly like twisty and tighty root, sections or you're, going when you're going slow And you've got to sort of inch your way around a technical section

 That extra length in the wheelbase was great when the bike was really heavy and gaining velocity when descending down big hills laid them with bags and likewise that slightly slower, more confident steering just lets. You lean it into a corner with confidence. You know that it's not going to like dip or twitch when it gains speed. You just know that this bike is just going to plug on on the line that you put it on

[ Applause ]: this is the specialized diverge comp carbon, it costs 3 600 pounds, and for that money you get a fact: 9r carbon frame, a future shock 2.0 model and a swap box in the down tube. So i've been riding this for the last few months. They launched this bike in may, and i've been putting the miles on it, both on-road and off-road, and these are my thoughts, [ Music ]

 So. Stability is both great at high speed, but i have also noticed that sometimes the diverge can be a bit laborious when you're trying to make a tight turn or get up and over some, particularly like twisty and tighty root, sections or you're, going when you're going slow And you've got to sort of inch your way around a technical section. It can be a bit more difficult on this bike, but it doesn't compromise the ride quality though, and i think actually the trade-off for that stability at high speeds and a particularly good on-road performance is worth it really now. The dt swiss 540 wheels have been absolutely bomb proof

Specialized Diverge Review: The Do-It-All Gravel Bike? | Cycling Weekly

 When i humble brag warning did a really cool 280 kilometer coast coast ride with my former colleague joe, that was on that bike and at the end of that enormous day, i was very impressed by how fresh i felt even over the course of a three or Four hour ride be on road or gravel with the new bike, you really do feel a difference, and that is for me where the system shines. Now, as i mentioned, the new future shock is adjustable to adjust it essentially, where your top cat would normally sit on your stem. You have a small index dial and from turning that through 90 degrees, you can go from fully open all the way to fully closed. The system is active enough without being too boggy and squishy fully open to make a difference to make it more comfortable without wallowing through its travel

 Now i haven't set this bike up as tubeless is a review bike and it's going back to specialized imminently, so i've had to set it up with tubes as standard now. This means i've had to run ever so slightly higher pressures than i would with a tubular sap to avoid pinch flats, as you lean over in you know, kind of tighter corners. You get this quite unnerving transition between the smooth section and the tread on the outside. Likewise, the tread is also pretty much useless in the wet trails we typically find here in the uk

 It was first seen on what is now the previous generation stump jumper. This essentially makes use of the fact that down tubes, quite big these days and beneath the down tube bottle cage, you've got kind of like a plastic port with a really sturdy hinge which allows you to stuff multi-tools burritos jackets trail finds. What have you? My one? Criticism is leveled at the actual plate which forms the door to the swap box. This is a really small thing, but it did kind of annoy me these small nuts, which sit on the base of the door to the swap box

 The whole system runs on a set of roller bearings and there's next to no stiction at all. In the system, even when you're riding over relatively smooth gravel, it is very active and you can look down and see the little rubber boot satisfyingly squishing away as you go over small terrain. But for me where the bike really shines is on longer rides the difference. It makes in terms of upper body fatigue, is really noticeable even on the previous generation bike
