I got a used single speed road bike at the beginning of quarantine after not owning a bike since I was 15. After getting laid off I needed something fun to get me out of the house and I've had a great time building up some distance and riding around with friends.

So when my new job gave me a bonus I figured I'd use it to buy a multi speed road bike so I can join some hillier rides with a local bike club. After checking almost every bike shop in Austin and a few in San Antonio it seems like the earliest I might even be able to try something that would fit me is March. I thought I'd be able to find something that just wasn't my first choice make or model, but y'all weren't joking. Bikes are actually sold clean out. 

This sucks. Hope I can find something in March.

 Because that's what Cannondale are good at, right? They're good at making bikes that handle so well, they have the compliance, but they don't restrict your performance. No, and that's definitely the case with this. It's a very brave move from Cannondale to completely throw away the old bike that everybody loved, and to then go, no, this is it, this is the new one, and everyone's like, whoa, but yes, it's got all of the features of that Super 6 Evo that we all loved, but they've just basically brought it kicking and screaming into the 21st century, so yeah, there's a huge amount of aero features on this, and that's probably the first thing that you will notice, is the frame design and the frame tubing, there's no round tubes left, they're all aerodynamically shaped now, and that's kind of like key to this new bike. It is faster and more efficient than the original, so it's about 30% more aerodynamically efficient, which is a huge, huge change

 Yes, I mean, you say they brought the Super 6 into the 21st century in terms of a GC bike, a race bike, and that kind of epitomises that, doesn't it? You look at every single high end all rounder bike, and they've got a dropped brisket. Yeah, and it's not a case of Cannondale just following the crowd and going through it, they've done a lot of testing, a lot of aerodynamic testing, and they've all come up with the same conclusion, drop stays are faster, drop stays are more comfortable, and so that's why it's done that, and that's why they are there, and why they deserve a place on this particular bike. Good. I mean, you could have said previously, before the System 6, that Cannondale didn't really have a foot in the door with aerodynamics, they didn't have an aero bike, they weren't showing any aero properties with the old Super 6, so I guess the System 6 really sort of paved the way for their thinking in terms of aerodynamics, which we know to be a very fast and capable bike, so this just brings that back a little bit, doesn't it, and goes more at the all round ability of a bike

 Good. I mean, you could have said previously, before the System 6, that Cannondale didn't really have a foot in the door with aerodynamics, they didn't have an aero bike, they weren't showing any aero properties with the old Super 6, so I guess the System 6 really sort of paved the way for their thinking in terms of aerodynamics, which we know to be a very fast and capable bike, so this just brings that back a little bit, doesn't it, and goes more at the all round ability of a bike. Yeah, the same team that was responsible for the System 6 had a say and had a hand in terms of designing this to keep it as aero as possible, but obviously then they needed to make sure that it's a bike that everybody can ride, and that as a GC bike it's definitely up there. It's kind of weird saying that term here, but it does have almost that advantage over a lot of its competitors in terms of what you get for your money, and it's also one of those things that as soon as you step on that bike, and as soon as you start riding, everything about, oh my God, this costs so much money, it just goes because it's just a very, very rewarding, incredible bike to ride

 Which isn't surprising really, I mean, it wasn't a bad bike in terms of how it looked, but that is a huge amount for them to save, 30%, it's huge. Big fat round tubes are not great at going through the air, so they basically kick the air out, and so they realise that the best shape, and the shapes that you'll see, these are what they call a truncated airfoil shape, so it's effectively, they've taken the shape of an aeroplane wing, which as we know is aerodynamically very efficient, and basically chopped bits off it to kind of like mimic the shape, or the best bit about it, but to make it as lightweight as possible. So there's the least amount of that airfoil shape going on here, but it has the same sort of aerodynamic advantages of a full airfoil shape. So you've got this in the down tube, in the head tube, top tube is never really that much of an issue, but definitely seat tube here as well, so those are the big features there of the front triangle, but then probably the other thing that you'll notice that's completely different here, is that rear triangle as well

When Cannondale released this, the latest evolutionary step of the venerable SuperSix platform, we were a little taken aback owing to the drastic reimagining of the iconic original. Lamenting the disappearance of the classic round tubed frame we threw a leg over this new, angular beast and instantly we knew this was something special and most deserved of a place in Editor’s Choice.

Love them or hate them, electric bikes are here to stay, and Cannondale’s first go at a gravel-focused model was a huge success in our opinion. After spending some time on the Synapse NEO SE, we came away extremely impressed by the bike’s smooth acceleration, confidence-inspiring ride, and quality build. While the electric Synapse will only assist up to 20 miles per hour (similar to all class 1 e-bikes), this was enough of a grin-maker for even the most skeptical riders among us. You do pay a steep premium for the Bosch drive unit and 500Wh battery, but it’s a boon for daylong enjoyment on remote backroads.

As is the case with all e-bikes, the Cannondale’s battery and motor are very heavy (the Synapse NEO SE weighs in at a hefty 40+ pounds). If you plan to transport your e-bike with any regularity, it’s important to consider the weight limit of your rack and your ability to lift and load the bike. Another issue is power: if you run out of juice on the trail, it’ll be a slow and difficult ride back to your car. And finally, e-bike laws still are evolving and changing, so it’s important to know the rules before you head out. But none of these issues are specific to the Synapse, and if you’re set on an electric model that crosses over nicely between backcountry and road use, we think it’s a true standout.See the Cannondale Synapse NEO SE

 Give me all the comfort i need when doing three or four hour rides. I, like the fact you have a two piece, aero handlebar and stem i like the shape of the tops and the drops and the bar tape is really comfy as well especially running out. Gloves when it's warm enough, which is at the moment crazy climate change uh to thank for that and on this bike to use the smart sense and particularly the radar, you use your own computer, either garmin or wahoo, which most are compatible now with the garmin vario Radar, low models use a device on a handlebars that doesn't have a computer, gives you a simple readout of a car approaching so different levels of technology based on your experience, but most people buying a bike of this price range, probably have their own computer, their own Preference for a computer so at least they haven't, given you a computer as standard with a bike, but maybe they could, in the future, develop their own or partner with garmin or wahoo or another brand, to give you a built-in computer, but is that a move too Far, probably we have been there before our bike's, giving a smart capabilities of bikes. So at least you have your own computer to fit to the bike

 Okay time. To sum up all my thoughts and observations of riding the new bike for the last two weeks into one concise, succinct verdict for you to take away today, only it's not so easy and there is a tale of two halves on a plus side. I love the performance of a new frame, the handling, the comfort, the speed, much faster than the old bike, much more engaging, much more dynamic to ride, and we have some nice details like an external threaded bottom bracket, a regular seat, post and semi internal cable routing. So those are all a win, but on the downside we have a technology that you can't remove from the bike and that wouldn't be a problem if the technology worked extremely well and worked as good as aftermarket solution

 So this new bike has some big shoes to feel and has it filled them? Oh, yes, it has. Oh, my goodness me, this bike is just phenomenal. What a package it's even faster, even more exciting, even more dynamic to ride. Yes, it's still just as comfy as the old bike, with the same relaxed geometry gives you a higher position than a race bike and a really short footage and planted in high speed situations

Should you buy a 2022 Cannondale Synapse with integrated lights and radar?

 But it's one that we, the cyclist editorial team, all agreed that cannondale synapse has always managed to deliver expertly. So the last time this particular synapse was updated was back in 2017 and that was tall intended purposes. Just a disc brake makeover for its predecessor, because, ultimately, that bike, which was launched back in 2013, was arguably quite a way ahead of its competitors. In terms of the features it was already showcasing um some eight years ago i mean that bike already had a lot of integration of components

 So it could be in the knicker time too, because i'll be honest, whilst this synapse did run out as unanimous winner in our head-to-head best of the best competition for the endurance bike sector. You know the competition is growing ever stronger in this category. So what were those key details that stood out for us that enabled the synapse to just edge out its competitors? So something i think, cannondale has really done well with the design of the synapse, was the way in which it's interpreted the endurance sector, and i think what i mean by that is some of its competitors have maybe over egged that comfort element by having really tall Front ends very relaxed geometry, long, wheelbases and adding in those actual moving active suspension systems and so on, and what that can do if you're, not careful is always the danger of making your bike feel certainly heavier, but even a bit languid in its handling and responsiveness And ultimately, sort of robbing the bike of speed. And yet it's speed that most cyclists all measure themselves and compare themselves by whether that's giving a mate to kicking up the local climbs or getting a gold award in a grand, fondo or perhaps even just riding, to work faster

 I don't know, but here's that sweet spot, that we're looking for really well so there we have it. The cannondale synapse undeniably one of the most prevalent endurance, road bikes of the current era and one that we feel epitomizes this genre importantly not by following others, but by treading its own path and delivering what is expected of it in a clean and unfussy way. You wouldn't expect the new synapse to come close to the previous model's svelte lightweight design. So it's quite a remarkable achievement that this new synapse chassis is exactly the same weight as the 2018 model. Cannondale'S award-winning synapse is the definition of the modern endurance bike and innovation has always been at the core of the synapses design dna. Does the 2022 model follow on or could it be an innovation so far, [ Music ]? It would have been very easy for cannondale to ensure the synapses success by just using lessons learned from the brilliant supersix evo and the system 6 to produce their modernized synapse. It seems that wasn't on cannondale's agenda for the 2022 model, whereas previous incarnations in the synapse kept a more race-like bike design. With this new version, they've shifted far more to a real world, rider integrated lights and even a new cannondale specific version of garmin's underrated

 Changes are all about making the bike easy to live with it. For goes complex, internal routine, that's become commonplace on pretty much. Every modern road bike in favor of a simpler routine through a large port in the downtube they've, also moved away from the integrated seat. Clamp evolved in favor of a standard, alloy ring binder and slotted seat tube

 The new synapse rightfully keeps its place as one of the best endurance bikes around it's up there with the likes of specialized roubaix giants, dufy and cevallos caledonia. It'S handling meets what i love about great road bikes that compelling mix of sure footage stability and fast handling. The addition of the tech extras is the icing on the cake, but i'd still be smitten with the synapses charms. If it came sean of all these safety enriching extras, [, Music ]
