Austin Air Healthmate HM400 vs Blueair Blue Pure 211+

I think that the filter really was defective, because I can't imagine that is how a carbon filter must smell. Others have complained about nasty smells coming from their carbon filters in other units, but I could never live with it if that was normal. I'm sure it was just a bad filter. Anyway, the unit itself worked really well, but without knowing if the filter was at fault or not I can't give it 5 stars

I've been using the Pure 211+ for about a month so far and it's been working very well.

I'll start with the good stuff: I did a bit of research into what air purifier units were recommended by sites that aimed to help those suffering from mold issues (me) and allergy problems. I felt I could trust recommendations by websites that didn't sell air purifiers, only had feedback and input from experts and users as to which ones did a good job. Well, Austin Air came up again and again as a good manufacturer, and I thought this unit was the right fit for what I needed. They do make this same item, the Healthmate, in 2 smaller sizes for less money

It makes a tremedous amount of noise. If that level was any indication of its ability to do the job, I'd have the cleanest air in the neighborhood. Definitely not worth the price.

The noise level is good. It produces moderate white noise on its highest setting and is pretty quiet on its low and medium settings. I use it for my 700sqft apartment and it does a great job managing pet odor and does a great job filtering smoke and cooking odors when I’m searing meats. I recommend this highly for apartment life in general! If you want it for a bedroom or a single room, you could get by on the smaller model, but since I use this in my kitchen as well living with a cat, I opted for this size model and I am pleased with how it performs

This is an expensive item but when you suffer from asthma you really need something that truly gets to the nitty gritty. I do question the craftsmanship. When we received this and unpacked it we noticed that we heard something rolling around in it. My husband then proceeded to unscrew the top to see what it was

As someone who lives in the Bay Area (which gets smoked out on what seems like an annual basis during wildfire season), a good air purifier is absolutely critical. I own the Blue Air 211+ and highly recommend it. It also helps me with general seasonal allergies and I've found I sleep better and wake up feeling more refreshed with cleaner air.

I bought this because I was moving into a nice basement apartment and figured it would be good to get any potentially harmful particles out of the air. I had been looking for one that would cover the square footage that I have and this one was one of the few that could. I wasn't a fan of the price, but I was under the gun and a couple auctions on eBay didn't work out. I haven't had any issues since using this machine

My wife on the other hand, she is more sensitive with allergens such as dust and pollen and she felt the device had helped her greatly. Anyways, because of the unsual burning smell I returned it and order a different air purifier brand.

Having to replace the filters, even at a pro-rated discount is too costly. I ended up spending another $250 for 2 new filters after less than a year. Do not be fooled by the 5 year filter claim. It is false advertising as far as I am concerned

We have had several of these units in our house since 2017. I believe they do a decent job at filtering the air, and they are pretty quiet (although with age some of them become a bit noisier as the fan bearing wears -- but even these are not obnoxiously noisy). I was a little disappointed to learn that the filter replacement indicator is just a dumb timer which is supposed to turn orange, and then red after 6 months of use. Easy to vac dust from pre-filter from outside lower section. Good size. Well worth money spent Does what it says it can do plus! Made a big difference in the house. Made in USA

I do think this would work very well for people who simply want to keep allergens at bay or want to keep very light whiffs of smoke such as momentary barbecue smoke that comes in before you have a chance to go close the window. It's very attractive, the outside filter is a knit fabric that is very easy to wash and high to dry while you use the second provided one, and it's so easy to operate. Just a light tap turns it on.
