However, you can only achieve its max refresh rate over a DisplayPort connection, as it's capped at 144Hz over HDMI.

It has a fast response time at any refresh rate, making motion look extremely smooth, and it has low input lag. Unfortunately, the panel has a BGR subpixel layout, which affects text clarity depending on the software or program you use, but this isn't a big issue in gaming menus, and it doesn't affect the overall picture quality.

The best budget monitor for HDR gaming that we've tested is the Gigabyte M27Q. If you're on a budget, you won't find something with good HDR picture quality like the other monitors in this recommendation, but you'll at least get excellent gaming performance. The M27Q is like that, as it has a ton of gaming features, and it's excellent for gaming, but its HDR performance is a bit limited. Still, it's decent overall for HDR gaming.

It comes with a 170Hz refresh rate, and it has a quick response time whether you're gaming at its max refresh rate or 60Hz. It has an optional backlight strobing feature to reduce motion blur, which you can use at the same time as the VRR, but there are a few bugs with it, as the feature stops working entirely if the refresh rate drops below 80Hz. Speaking of VRR, it's a native FreeSync monitor, and those with NVIDIA graphics cards can use the G-SYNC compatibility feature. You won't notice any delay while gaming either, as it has low input lag.

As mentioned, the HDR picture quality leaves a lot to be desired, but that's normal for a budget-friendly model. It has a low contrast ratio, and as it lacks a local dimming feature, blacks look gray in the dark. It doesn't get bright in HDR, but on the plus side, it displays a wide color gamut and has incredible gradient handling. If you're willing to compromise in picture quality for a cheaper monitor, it's a decent choice.

If you're on a budget, the best monitor for gaming on the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S is the Gigabyte M27Q. It's a 27 inch monitor with a 1440p resolution, so it's big enough to deliver an immersive gaming experience. While it doesn't have a 4k resolution, it can downscale 4k @ 60Hz signals from the Xbox, which results in sharper images than 1440p games.

It's an excellent gaming monitor that's versatile for other uses because it has a bunch of extra features. You can charge your devices while gaming thanks to its two USB ports and one USB-C input, and it has a multi-input display feature so you can play games and respond to messages on your laptop each on the monitor. It has a max 170Hz refresh rate with VRR support, and it also has low input lag for a responsive feel.

The main downside to this monitor is that it uses a BGR subpixel layout. While this doesn't affect the overall picture quality on the Xbox, it has an impact on the text clarity whether you're reading text in game menus or browsing through the web because not all programs support the BGR subpixel layout. However, if that isn't an issue for you, it's a great choice, and it won't cost you much.

While the Gigabyte M32Q is a great monitor for gaming, if you're a competitive gamer and want the best gaming monitor for under $500, you'll want something with a higher refresh rate, like the Gigabyte M27Q X. It can be a bit hard to find depending on its availability, but if you find it, you can get it for under $500, and it's excellent for gaming. It's a 1440p display with a high 240Hz refresh rate, but besides the higher refresh rate, it's very similar to the M32Q, but you get less screen space to multitask. It delivers great motion handling as it has a quick response time across its entire refresh rate range, so you won't notice any motion blur, and its input lag is low for a responsive feel.

On top of its excellent gaming performance, it also delivers great picture quality. The color accuracy is remarkable, and you won't have to worry about getting it calibrated if you care about accurate colors, and it displays a wide range of colors in HDR and SDR. It also gets bright and has good reflection handling if you use it in a bright room, but it doesn't look as good in the dark because of its low contrast, but that's normal for many monitors.

If you prefer something cheaper, check out the Gigabyte M27Q, which is a good choice in the lower mid-range price category. It's different from the Dell S2722QC because it has a lower 1440p resolution, meaning the text clarity isn't as sharp. Because it uses a BGR subpixel layout instead of the standard RGB, there are some text clarity issues in certain programs that don't support that subpixel format, but this isn't an issue for everyday use. However, the main advantage the Gigabyte has over the Dell is that it has a higher refresh rate and better gaming performance, meaning it's a more versatile monitor if you need something for work and play.

Although it's designed as a gaming monitor, it has a few productivity features like its KVM switch and Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture modes. It also has great peak brightness and decent reflection handling if you want to use it in a well-lit room, and its wide viewing angles mean the image looks the same from the sides. It also has an sRGB mode with excellent color accuracy, which is important if your work requires accurate colors.

If you don't like an ultrawide format and prefer a 1440p monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio, or if you just want something cheaper, check out the Gigabyte M27Q X. It's a very different monitor from the LG 34GP950G-B because of its smaller screen and higher 240Hz refresh rate. It means that it's an excellent choice for high-frame-rate and competitive gaming if your graphics card can handle a 1440p resolution. While both the LG and the Dell Alienware AW3423DW have native G-SYNC support, this monitor instead has FreeSync support with G-SYNC compatibility, which doesn't make much of a difference if you have an NVIDIA graphics card, except you lose out on a few features.

Even if you don't want it for gaming, it offers a ton of productivity features, like a USB hub that features a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. It means you can easily connect a compatible laptop to display an image from it and charge it at the same time, but it only supports 18W of power delivery, which isn't enough to actively charge your laptop while you're using it, but it will at least keep your battery alive.

If you find the 24-inch screen too small on the ViewSonic XG2431, check out something bigger with the Gigabyte M27Q. Besides the larger screen, there are a few differences, as the Gigabyte has a higher 1440p resolution, but the trade-off is that it has a lower 170Hz refresh rate. It means it isn't ideal for high-frame-rate or competitive gaming, but if you want a higher resolution for a sharper image, you'll be happy with this one. Even though its motion handling isn't as good as the ViewSonic, it's still quick with minimal blur trail behind fast-moving objects, and there isn't any overshoot that results in inverse ghosting.

While it supports a high 170Hz refresh rate, this is only possible with a DisplayPort connection using an 8-bit signal and not 10-bit, meaning you'll see some banding in games, but this is only an issue if you want the best picture quality. It also has FreeSync VRR support with G-SYNC compatibility and low input lag, so you get a nearly tear-free and responsive gaming experience. It has a low contrast ratio, meaning blacks look gray in the dark, and if that's important to you, the Dell S2722DGM is a good alternative with higher contrast, but it has worse motion handling.

The Gigabyte M27Q X is the best monitor for Xbox One X. It's an excellent gaming monitor that's mainly designed for PC gaming because it has a fast 240Hz refresh rate, but it still offers excellent performance to use with the Xbox One X. With a 1440p resolution and fast refresh rate, you can use it to play 1440p games up 120 fps from the console, which is great if you like high-frame-rate gaming. If you prefer a sharper image for greater detail, it can also downscale a 4k image, which results in a sharper image than a native 1440p signal.

In terms of its gaming performance, it has a great response time both with 120Hz and 60Hz signals, meaning there isn't too much blur trail behind fast-moving objects. It has a backlight-strobing feature that reduces persistence blur, but it doesn't work below 80Hz, so it isn't helpful for 60 fps gaming. It also has low input lag for a responsive feel, and it remains low no matter the type of signal used.

If you want something bigger, consider the Gigabyte M27Q. There are trade-offs to getting this monitor over the ViewSonic XG2431 as it has a lower max refresh rate of 170Hz, and its backlight strobing feature isn't as versatile. However, it also has a larger screen with a 1440p resolution for sharper images and a more immersive gaming experience. Like the ViewSonic, it's an impressive gaming monitor as it has VRR support to reduce screen tearing, low input lag for a responsive feel, and a quick response time for smooth motion, but there's a bit more motion blur compared to the ViewSonic.

It's a great choice if you tend to game in a bright room because it gets bright enough to fight glare, and the reflection handling is decent. However, it doesn't look as good in dark rooms because blacks look gray on it. If you prefer something with better dark room gaming performance, consider the Dell S2722DGM, but it has worse motion handling, so the Gigabyte still offers the best gaming performance.

If you want something on a budget, there are a few options you can get that still have a USB-C input, like the Gigabyte M27Q. With a cheaper cost, there are a few sacrifices you need to make, as it has a lower 1440p resolution compared to the 4k screen of the Dell S2722QC. It means that text doesn't look as sharp, and because of the Gigabyte's BGR subpixel layout, there are some text clarity issues with programs that don't support it, but overall the text clarity is decent, and this won't be a big issue for most people. Besides that, it has a USB-C input that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode with only 10 W of power delivery, which isn't enough to charge your MacBook, but it at least keeps the battery going while working.

For the most part, there aren't any issues using this monitor with a MacBook, but in certain picture modes, there are flicker issues, so you have to ensure you don't use those modes. It has a few extra features usually found on higher-end models, like its KVM switch and Picture-by-Picture and Picture-in-Picture modes, making it a great choice for productivity and providing good value for a budget monitor.

If you want something cheaper, check out the Gigabyte M27Q X. It's a mid-range gaming monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate like the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM, so you still get high-end gaming features for a lower cost. However, there are still a few trade-offs as it doesn't have native G-SYNC support like the ASUS, so you don't have access to NVIDIA's Reflex Latency Analyzer. However, it still has G-SYNC compatibility to reduce screen tearing with NVIDIA graphics cards over DisplayPort connections.

It also has slower response times than the ASUS, particularly with low-frame-rate signals, but if you play high-frame-rate games, you won't notice much blur trail behind fast-moving objects. It also has a backlight strobing feature to reduce persistence blur, and unlike many monitors, it works at the same time as the VRR support. The input lag is low, and the monitor has a few extra features, like a USB hub if you want to connect your keyboard and mouse directly to it or charge other devices.

If you're on a budget, there are still a few good 1440p gaming options you can get, like the Gigabyte M27Q. It's an older and lower-end version of the Gigabyte M27Q X that you can still get. Because it costs less, it has a lower 170Hz refresh rate, which is what you have to expect for a budget-friendly monitor, but because of this, it's also easier for your graphics card to reach the max refresh rate. Its overall gaming performance is similar to the M27Q X because it has excellent motion handling, VRR support, and low input lag for a smooth and responsive gaming experience.

One big difference is that this monitor has a different panel type with a BGR subpixel layout. It can negatively impact text clarity in some programs and games, but it doesn't affect the picture quality or gaming performance. While this monitor is a great choice for gaming in well-lit rooms as it gets bright, it has a low contrast that makes it less ideal for dark rooms. If you tend to game in the dark, the Dell S2722DGM has a higher contrast and is a good alternative, but it has worse motion handling.

While you'll need to pay a bit more for a USB-C monitor compared to ones without a USB-C port, there are a few budget-friendly USB-C monitors, like the Gigabyte M27Q. Unlike the Dell S2722QC, it has a lower 1440p resolution, so while the text clarity isn't as good, it's still decent, but this is a trade-off you need to make for a cheaper display. It has one USB-C port that supports only 10 W of power delivery, which is much lower than the S2722QC and isn't enough to charge your laptop, but you can display an image with this USB-C port, and you can still keep the laptop's battery going while working.

It has a few extra features, like a KVM switch that allows you to control multiple devices with the same keyboard and mouse connected to the display. It also has Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture modes that let you view images from those two sources simultaneously. While its ergonomics aren't as good as the more expensive monitors, it's still okay as you can adjust the height and tilt range, but you can't swivel it.

Gigabyte M27Q Review (2020) - The Best All-Around 1440p ...

 As for color, I kept both monitors at the default color settings out of the box - the Dell had great saturation, possibly oversaturated. The M27Q appears less saturated, and its overall color out of the box appears more neutral, while the Dell appeared warm. Regardless of which you prefer, both monitors' color can be adjusted. However, no amount of calibration can fix the Dell's low contrast ability; the M27Q wipes the floor with the S2721DGF in this respect

 Subjectively, its design looks uninspired while the Dell has a distinct design and a mix of subtle and aggressive curves and angles. The M27Q doesn't feel flimsy by any means, so I can live with it looking and feeling a little cheaper for over $100 less. However, its defects and strange behavior are something that shouldn't need to exist at any price range. For $300, my display should stand straight and the monitor should turn off when it's supposed to

 Regardless of which you prefer, both monitors' color can be adjusted. However, no amount of calibration can fix the Dell's low contrast ability; the M27Q wipes the floor with the S2721DGF in this respect. Perhaps the Dell's biggest flaw is that it can't properly display black, while the M27Q has among the best contrast in its category.  That the M27Q has a display that rivals more expensive monitors is not its only selling point

 On my unit, there's either a speck of dust or a scratch on the screen, but luckily it's on the black border. The M27Q has extremely thin bezel edges on the top and sides, but has a black gap between the display's image and the bezel on those edges. It's not uncommon in monitors, but looks less consistent, and to me, less pleasing than a display that reaches the edges of the screen. In this case though, I'm lucky that the defect was on the gap

KVM switch is amazing for quality of life, but low quality brings down the M27Q

GIGABYTE have managed to integrate this new LG panel into essentially the same design as the old M27Q, with a few minor alterations, such as the chin getting slightly larger on the front of the display, and a more angular base for the stand. But basically, what we're seeing here is the same as many of GIGABYTE's non-AURUS monitors over the last few years, a functional design that doesn't waste money on unnecessary features like RGB LED lighting. The majority of the monitor is covered in a simple black plastic, so it's not the most premium build going around, but like I said, I think this is fine for most people, and the relatively simple aesthetic makes it fit in well with most setups
