Yamaha RX-V485 review: Affordable hub for an entry-level home-theater system
The Yamaha sounds great overall, but my listening tests did reveal subtle differences between it and the more-expensive Denon AVR-740H. The Denon AVR-S740H was a little better at keeping things together at volume with the Clash's Rock the Casbah, as the Yamaha got a little steely when towing the Q Acoustics 3050i at high levels.
Movie room complete
The receiver is a yamaha RX-V385. In building the room, I used 5/8 drywall and put r11 insulation in the walls and ceiling. I think it has helped some but you can still hear it throughout the house, especially the subs. This system can get really loud too with no distortion from the speakers.

Yamaha RX-V385 Review - One of the Top Entry-Level Receivers
When pushed to its upper limit the amp found it hard to keep up. Conclusion Yamaha’s RX-V385 is not your average entry-level receiver. The receiver has plenty of inputs and a few features that we wouldn’t expect to find on an amp at this price point
New to home audio, $500 budget
Yamaha RX-V385, Sony STR-DH590 and Denon S540bt are three options. The Yamaha and Sony are $280 and the Denon is $300. For speakers you can go with a pair of Polks like the T15, Micca RB42x, Klipsch R-15M or you can even look on Craigslist and FB Marketplace for higher quality speakers in great condition. Also, speakers are heavily discounted during sales.
Great unit, good sound, but hot...!
I purchased this receiver about a month ago and have been using it daily since. The sound production is great. I have 5 in-wall speakers all 100W connected to it and just putting it at 0 sound (sound units go from roughly -50 to +50) that's about as loud as I would want it. I'm not thrilled with the...
