My commute would be like 3 miles on the street and 3 on a paved trail. I don’t exactly want speed but the fx3 is great.

I recently got a Trek FX 3 Disc bike. I absolutely love it. New they go for about $900, I got it used for $700. It’s a fantastic bike, lighter than my old bike, set up like a road bike but it has upright handlebars like a hybrid.

* Local bike shop brands... You'll need to purchase these from a local shop that will assemble and tune the bike for you. That adds a bit of a premium to the bike cost, but might be well worth it to you. Specialized Sirrus X 2.0 or 3.0, Trek FX Disk 3 or 4, Giant Roam Disk 2, Salsa Journeyman (Flatbar or Dropbar).

I went from occasionally riding a cheap $100 Costco/Walmart bike for 20 or so years to a trek FX-3 for about $1,000 Canadian last year after taxes. It’s an amazing upgrade that I take on the local walking/biking trails here as well as on the road - just having done my longest road ride last weekend at 75km.

I bought a used Trek Verve 3 Disc, and bought the TSDZ2 along with a tiny 52v 6ah battery. It gets me to and from work. I had to Dremel the bottom bracket area to fit the motor and reroute the internal cables due to them being pressed by the motor.

The Trek FX 3 Disk is the better deal if it's available around you in your size, it's sold out around here anyway (Chicago). If I had to shop at REI right now, I'd be spending a little more on the drop bar or eBikes.

I dont know much about bikes but my research ended on being between the sirrus x3 and the trek fx 3 disc. I bought the fx 3 and 3 weeks ago (and 12 months later) I picked it up and have been absolutely loving it. All I think about at work is going for my next ride. Additionally, my wife has a carbon road bike and I dont feel like I'm at a disadvantage at all when riding together.

Most of the roads are ok, but it's Michigan so we do have some terrible road conditions and it can also turn into dirty pretty quickly. We'll be living near 2 parks with some paths, some of which are paved but there are dirt/gravel as well. There are MTB trails in the parks, but I'm not planning to ride those with this bike. I realize I would need a proper MTB for those.

I was able to test ride both bikes and I am leaning towards the Trek FX 3 because, while riding, I couldn't tell the difference between the bikes. I was concerned about the narrower tires on the FX 3 but they seemed fine while riding. In my area, the Sirrus is only available in a sky blue and I really don't like the color. The Trek is available in a blue that goes from dark to light and I like that color.
