 A hundred years ago they had wet nurses for lots reasons. If you don’t make enough milk to meet your baby’s needs, don’t feel guilty. Formula is a perfectly acceptable alternative! If the pressure of “performing” on demand or your baby’s fussing at the breast stresses you out, formula is a perfectly acceptable alternative! If your feelings about your changing body are dysphoric and you don’t enjoy breastfeeding, formula is a perfectly acceptable alternative! Now that my wife and I have done this together, I seriously can’t imagine doing all of the breastfeeding alone.

 We have both been able to breastfeed with virtually no pressure— we have more than enough milk and our baby latches well— and yet we have had different challenges (pain, clogged ducts, forceful letdown and fussy baby, individual supply, etc).  - The duckbill valves don't seem to be as good of quality as the Ameda. They are larger, and opaque white which means I can't see if there is milk sitting in them. I know I'm nit-picking, but the valves on the Ameda are clear so I can see if there is still milk to be tapped down into the bottle before I remove the flange. - The bottles are wide-mouth, which is not great for me but might be OK for others

A very nice pump, but did not increase the amounts I am able to pump.

 If you don't like the bag options, this one is super basic and one of those pump upgrades. You can purchase a bag for your pump on Amazon or at other baby retailers. This may seem extra, but if you find a cute one you like, throw it on your baby list registry. As far as baby stuff goes, newborns don’t need a whole lot at first. First tip - register everywhere! Amazon, buy buy baby, babylist, target, walmart. Don’t buy anything full price if you dont have to. Each of these places offers a box of freebies with your registry as well

A baby first aid kit. We have baby tylenol, a thermometer, baby nail clippers, a snot sucker, a baby medicine dispenser, gripe water. We went for frida brand on a lot of this stuff.

A safe place to put baby while you do things like shower. A baby swing is great for this. We opted for an inexpensive bouncer, though the Internet at large seems to love the 4 moms electric thingy.

How does this happen you ask?  Well, I was diagnosed with PCOS last year and had doctors telling me if it was normal in my condition to not have a period due to the situation.  I've never had a child before and I work a laborious job that puts my body in low level pain alot.  3 weeks ago, I got to this point where I couldn't understand why I was having to pee all the time and I was taking a new medication that I thought could maybe causing some side effects.

I still had this inkly of thought to think about pregnancy and finally just randomly said to my husband "Hey, would you mind if I took a rapid pregnancy test?  I don't want to just get one and have you freak out on me if you find me doing it and it's just to dispell some concerns.  I honestly don't think I'm pregnant".

He nicely bullied me then to get the test and late that night I get a surprise positive test reading.  Husband gently freaks and has a mini internal crisis (new daddy thoughts).  I then got into my primary to take a blood test following day and on Columbus day, got positive results with estimate of 6 to 7 weeks.

I need struggled and filled out fifty billion forms to get into an obygyne clinic that wasn't able to see me until 2 weeks following.  When I get in, the pandemic forced me to go alone and I, again, was expecting something unexpected I just got blown out of the water.

The woman goes to plunk the wand inside me, then takes it out and really quickly changes to the sonogram.  This is when I get told "So you think you are around 10 weeks hun? .....Well you're actually more than that".

"Okay.....how much more?"

"Ohh...I'd say around 28 or 29 weeks..."

....I start hyperventilating and Ohmygodding and she had to spend 5 to 10 minutes talking me into a calmer state.  Baby seems to have strong heart beat and she told me baby looks good.  The next room I get pulled into I get told I'm actually 31 weeks and 4 days estimate.

Long story short, my husband and I thought we'd have many many more months to prepare and now we have less than 8 weeks to get everything ready for the little firecracker coming in hot into our lives.  We are happy, we are just scared.  

So with that, do any of you have nice suggestions on baby items I may need that I wouldn't think of?  I'm trying to compile from baby registry on Amazon but I'm worried there may be secret amazing needs that I have no time to thoroughly learn or get in the "know" about.  I appreciate any suggestions!

Best Pump but Pricey Replacement Parts

 And then after a few weeks of breast pumping and breastfeeding, I ended up purchasing the LV breast pumps as well, and those are completely cordless. And I will, of course, have a detailed review video for the LV pumps on their own, as well as a blog post around my blog, serenewoo.com. As a first time mom and the first time ever pumping or really looking at breast pumps, it can be very, very overwhelming

 I know when I was looking into breast pumps, it was really confusing. I didn't know which one to pick. My insurance didn't offer the ones that I had in mind, especially after watching some of the other videos online. I really had my mind and heart set on these other ones that other people's insurances were covering

 And then I would plug them in to the pump before I could start pumping. And the ones I am done pumping, I have to take them out carefully not to spill anything, lean over, make sure I catch every drop of breast milk because it's liquid gold and then set it down before taking the bra off, putting my other bra back on, putting my breast pads back in, putting this in the fridge and then being able to like do whatever it is I was doing or go back to bed. So that's the thing is that this is still not the most convenient thing in my opinion and it's 2021. I feel like we should come up with a better way to attach these to our breasts, just saying

 I was also pregnant, delivered, and a new mom during the age of COVID, so there's not really any reason for me to have to pump on the go right now, but it is a good option if you have to drive or you're going to be picking up other kids or if you are going to go back to work. Overall, it's been really convenient, and this was my main breast pump when I wanted a quick pump and wanted to really drain all of my milk and make sure that I got the full amount of ounces that I knew I was capable of getting in order to store it or to bottle feed my daughter. There's a bunch of different cycles. You've got different options

 When I eventually have a second kid, I’ll be looking into the Pumpables Super Genie because the reviews and settings on it look incredible (although it’s unfortunately, not covered by most insurances right now) and the Willow pump (because pumping without any wires will be super useful when I have 2 kids to look after and my husband likely won’t be WFH by the time we eventually have a 2nd kid). The Momma Alia channel on YouTube is extremely informative about all things pumping and she has reviews of a lot of different pumps on there.

 An electric is invaluable for helping build supply when you’re first starting out or if you end up needing to pump (as opposed to exclusively nursing) for whatever reason. If you live in the US, be aware that you are entitled to a free breast pump through insurance. 

**Choosing a breastpump-** For hygiene reasons, there’s no way to test drive a pump. It’s a leap of faith. Reddit and the internet love Spectra pumps (I personally use a Spectra S1). They’re very reliable and durable and have a long motor life and tons of settings

I'm intimidated by breast pumps.

Strong, gentle, portable--good for working moms and EPers, can be hacked to work with Medela parts

 Number one, I am an OBGYN. I am not a lactation consultant. This is stuff that I have learned kind of on the job and doing it myself. I cannot stress how important being plugged in with a good IBCLC is

 So you don't get moisture in mold because that's disgusting and you're giving milk to your baby. Your flanges or your breast shields. These really need to be replaced every six months. Every six months or immediately if you noted a tear or a crack in them

 I believe my insurance charged me a hundred bucks to be able to get the one that had a battery. It is worth it. Put this on your registry. Breast pump stuff on your registry because it's kind of a must if you are going to need to pump

According to the consultant, medela is the only one that makes an actual hospital-grade pump - the Symphony. If you see any other brands that use that phrase, they’re lying. Apparently Medela has been suing these other breast pump manufacturers over it. 

So my advice, if anyone else has had issues with pumping like I did, is this. Either buy a Symphony (they cost around $2,000), or look into renting one. Our hospital rents them out for $75 a month. Use it for the first month or two to help build your supply (this is also, apparently, the only model that actually does that well) and then use a normal one to maintain.
