I think the Geddy Lee Jazz bass is in that price range, and is one of my favorites, but the dream is a Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003.

But I think those are more expensive

First, go for something that is a "normal" bass with just an edgier sound, like the MusicMan Bongo or a Rickenbacker 4001. There's just something weird and "other" about these basses that makes a nice compliment to the P and J you already have. Second option is to really get innovative and look at the latest design trends from companies like Dingwall and Strandberg. Both used the Novax fanned fret design on the neck, so the TONES out of these things are unreal.

Up and coming bassist Paul T. recently sold the entirety of his small bass collection to afford a near mint condition 1973 Rickenbacker 4001 in a stunning Fireglo. Guitarist Wallace Appleton claims it “sounds like shit, he’s got the action low for ‘clank’ or something but it’s just crap” drummer, Vic, adds “it just buzzes all the time out of that stupid giant pickup, and he can barely even play anymore with it covering the strings.”.

The RickenBacker 4001, I just love the tone of it so much. it always sounds kind of chuggy and it just sounds so awesome.
