 Manufactured between 1961 and 1981, the Rickenbacker 4001 was created as the deluxe version of Rickenbacker's 4000 bass. The 4001 has two pickups with knobs that control volume and tone for each, providing deeper tonal possibilities. The body has a crested wave shape and the fretboard has signature triangle inlays.  It's really nice and lightweight. The original machines have been replaced by shallower, higher gear ratio sealed gear machines. All good here. It's definitely a player

 Crushed pearl. Crushed pearl inlays that go all the way across the fingerboard and, of course, this really bitchin' checkerboard binding. I love the checkerboard binding. So cool

 That's the neck pickup wide open, really round, really smooth. It's got that really just deep, deep bottom end going on. This is both pickups in the middle all the way, wide open, tone all the way open. Kind of piano string sounding, but just this huge round bottom end

 Here we have the quick access truss rod cover and the Just-a-Nut 3 fully adjustable solid brass nut system. This enables us to raise and lower the action at the nut, enabling the player to set up the bass for the perfect playing feel for their style and needs. Another defining element of the thumb base's unique tone is the pickup placement and electronics. It has dual J-style MEC pickups, carefully positioned to enhance low-end punch

 Here we have the quick access electronics compartment cover, which pops off in a matter of seconds. You can change your battery and put it back on without needing any tools. The thumb base delivers amazingly fast attack in its tone, and that comes via the bolt-on design. The Wenji neck is bolted onto the bubinga body with an incredibly tight neck pocket, transferring vibration perfectly to the body

 The edges are softly rounded for a comfortable playing feel. A key element of this process is that every fret is installed and leveled to a hundredth of a millimeter. On the side of the neck, we find fluorescent glow-in-the-dark position markers. As we move to the headstock, we have the ergonomically angled tuners for quick and easy tuning adjustments

I think I seem to be a feature with Warwick basses, is that they're very clean. I just got a warwick thumb, my 3rd warwick and i gotta say out of the 20+ basses i own this has to be my favorite, and i own everything from a squire j bass, to a fender american ultra p bass, and a couple of rickenbackers. Absolutely adore the thumb, the tones are incredible and the neck is super comfortable, only con i can think of, is MAN this thing is heavy.

Why is the Warwick Thumb worth so much? Even on the used market they are very expensive . I'm in the market for a 5 string daily driver. I currently use a pbass but only really practice and play through DI into my computer so no band stuff.. are these basses worth what they go for?

98 German Warwick Thumb BO. The playability of that bass (while sitting down - what an atrocious neck dive while on a strap) was out of this world. Finger, tap, slap, every sound just wanted to jump off the bass.

What is the best playing bass you have ever laid your hands on?

 It's really well balanced, it's not going to slide off your leg like some other basses do. And it's not incredibly heavy, so playing long gigs with this bass is going to work out well. What I'm playing through, it's an Eden 2x8, it's 180 watts. The reason why I wanted to pick this one to play with the Warwick is it's really crisp, really clean, so it's going to complement each other quite well
