 - Was not difficult to put batteries in. - Unit is compact and OK looking.  I only bought the OfficeGoods model because the Mr. Sharpy battery-powered sharpener (made by Sunbeam, remember them?) I've had since the 80s stopped working one day

 You have to insert them *exactly* vertical or it won't trigger the sharpener on. So, if I'm drawing and reach across the desk to sharpen a pencil, no go. I have to move the sharpener closer so I can insert the pencil "just so."  - The shavings receptacle is held in place by little plastic tabs

This sharpener works OK, but for the price I expected more. I've been using it for about a month now and here's my assessment.  Cons: - No auto-stop when pencil is sharpened. It keeps paring your pencil away for as long as you put it in there

Affordable & Portable - Electric & Battery Operated Pencil Sharpener

 It is built better, more sturdy as the black is flimsy. To keep it sharp, I use an old fashioned Prang drawing pencil from 20 years ago ( don't know if they still make those ). If I am using different brands of pencils, immediately discard the shavings into a craft box I designed just for that purpose, so I don't need to make constant trips to the garbage pail. Brands I use with this sharpener: Prismacolor Premier- ultimate joy, needs no extra pushing

 The prongs for holding the batteries warped after falling off my desk and the batteries would no longer fit properly and the cylinder moved about half inch, so no pencil sharpener. I still recommend this but don't get the black. I believe the silver is a new model as it actually sharpens better and you don't need to force a pencil in the groove. The original packaging on the black had nothing, except a piece of paper written in Chinese

It came packaged in a tape wrapped plastic container with the extra cord for added incentive as did the other one

Had been looking for some time to upgrade our current battery-powered Westcott 14074 pencil sharpener. Happened to come across this V-7 sharpener based upon all of the positive reviews, but hesitated due to the price. However, when it was on a Lightning sale, I decided to just go for it.  PROS: ++ Power options: Love the ability to choose between 4 AA batteries, USB powered through a desktop, or direct AC power

Solid, premium pencil sharpener with great options!

 I have measured it before sharpening and again afterwards. With just a couple of seconds inside the sharpener, I have found there is negligible difference in length, so if you use it well it will not chew through your pencils.  The reason I have taken a star off is because it does not take the slightly wider pencils (Derwent coloursoft) and the offer offer for the back up case is only for US customers. Understandable due to postage costs, but I would suggest the seller makes that clear on the leaflet that comes with the sharpener

The media could not be loaded. UPDATE- after my original review, the company sent me a new container for the shavings which I was very surprised and happy about. But now my issue is I THINK the motor is wearing out?? I really don’t know, but you can see in the attached video- it kinda only works half the time, and I was gently putting the pencil in the sharpener- its not like I was jamming it in there. This sharpener has lasted me 4 years

  This sharpener works great but After having it for a few months- when I emptied the shavings a little plastic piece broke off the container for the shavings- which is basically the safety mechanism. So for it to work now I have to jam poster putty into the slot where the plastic piece should go. On top of that I paid $35 for this sharpener that is now $10 cheaper. That's kind of annoying in itself

UPDATE- 4 Years Later.

The option for different tip pointiness (dull to sharp) is convenient for kids, but the sharpest setting still has a bit of a blunt tip. I'd prefer for that setting to give a much sharper point, similar to a manual/hand sharpener. Otherwise, I like that it prevents oversharpening by the change in sound of the motor and its compact size.

 Other perks of this product are that you have the choice of powering it with batteries (if you don't want a cord adding further clutter to your already cluttered desk) or using a USB power cord (which is nice because it gives you the choice of powering it into an outlet that has a USB adaptor or directly into your desktop, though not into a laptop). Personally, I use the cord into a wall outlet; why add more toxic batteries to our bloated landfills if you can help it, right? Another perk is that the shavings are held in a clear plastic removable thingy (the technical term) in the front, so you can see when it needs to be emptied.  I will probably not use this with expensive colored pencils as the sharpener chews quite a bit of core off when sharpening and this could lead to breakage; however I have good technique sharpening manually with a Prismacolor sharpener that gives me two very different lengths so I will continue to use and recommend that for colored pencils. The blunt on the Prismacolor manual sharpener was what I was hoping to find but the electric/battery blunt setting is closer to the Prismacolor's sharp point with more core shaved off. Of note is that the 4 AA batteries are not provided and the USB/ electric cable is short. The USB cable cannot be used with a laptop
