The KUM Long Point uses two separate sharpeners in one unit. It first renders the wood into an elongated cone and then shaves the lead to a fine point. The palm-sized sharpener easily fits into a briefcase or tote, and the clear shavings bin allows you to see when it's time to empty the filings. The sharpener is designed for the 2- and 3.15-mm lead common to art pencils but can handle 8 mm diameter pencils as well. 
The KUM utilizes two razor blades, one for each stage of the sharpening process. These blades are effective, but the second stage tends to break off the fine lead point if you're not careful. Moreover, this unit doesn't do well with charcoal or colored pencils. Odd-shaped pencils are difficult as well, such as those with a triangle cross-section. Finally, given the manual nature of this model, sharpening a brand new pencil is quite slow. Despite these shortcomings, the sharpener is a boss for its size and produces one of the finest tips of the group.

I like the 2mm pointer in the KUM "Automatic Long Point" sharpener, and the tiny KUM ones that are just a blade mounted in a very small piece of plastic. Rubbish bin required! I just took delivery of a Staedtler rotary one today, but I have barely had time to check that it works. Seems nice, though.

There was a thread yesterday that started talking about 2mm lead pointers in the comments, but then the comments were locked. I think the thread was shut down because it was interpreted as a request for purchase advice, so here's a new thread that hopefully won't violate any rules.

I'll start off.

My favorite pointer is the Staedtler rotary. The points are long and can be as sharp as I want to make them. Unfortunately, if you throw it in a backpack, it can get quite messy, so, at least for me, it is a desk sharpener. It's also a shame that many holders won't fit. I am fortunate that my two favorite holders (Staedtler 780 and Mitsubishi/Uni MH500) work great with it.

My favorite pocket pointer is the Mobius + Ruppert block sharpener for 2mm and 3.2mm. It's so easy to use an control that I often use it even when I'm at my desk and have access to my rotary. It does not contain the lead shavings, so it requires a little care when sharpening and access to some place to dump it. The 2mm point is a almost as long as the rotary's. The 3mm point is shorter, but I think that makes sense since 3.2mm lead is typically 4B or 6B.

When I need a pointer that is portable but is guaranteed to contain the mess, I reach for the Kita-Boshi. The points are sharp but very short, like the points that come on new leads. I've seen lots of bad reviews where people complain about the short point and how it's very sensitive to the angle you hold the pencil at while sharpening, but that's just the nature of this style of pointer. The pointers that unscrew from the tops of many Koh-i-Noor models function exactly the same way and I've never heard anyone complain, so I'm not sure why the Kita-Boshi gets so much hate.

I've recently been experimenting with a sheet of 360 grip sandpaper. The potential for mess is huge, but it's actually really easy to get nice points of whatever length I want. It's also easy to get quick chisel tips on the lead. Definitely need to be careful, though.

Favorite pointers (aka sharpeners) for 2mm lead?

 Perhaps I just suffered from buying multiple examples of one bad batch. However, considering that the two I bought most recently (approximately one year after the 4 prior ones) have "Made in Germany" stamped on the blades instead of just "Germany," it seems unlikely that they are from the same batch.  I'm 100% open to suggestions about pencil sharpeners that actually work. I strongly prefer a long tip over a short one (as this Kum provided

 Upon receiving this sharpener, which was boxed exactly the same as the ones from Amazon, and had the same "Made in Germany" stamping on the blades as the two I most recently purchased from Amazon (which didn't work, as detailed below), I tested it out on several pencils and it worked PERFECTLY. It was the same old Kum Long Point that I bought originally and loved.  I don't know why, but the 3 sharpeners I've bought from Dick Blick worked perfectly (they now stock replacement blades, too, something I couldn't find in the past), while the 6 I bought from Amazon didn't work at all. Again, the packaging and appearance of the sharpeners is the same

 Some shatter the pencil while others leave the tip dull and rounded, completely invalidating their purpose.  The Kum long point sharpener is not cheap rubbish. Its price, while relatively low, may seem steep for a simple hand pencil sharpener, but it's worth the extra bucks. The sharpener includes two blades

 Not wanting to leave the comfort of my apartment to venture to a physical art store, I searched online a bit and finally just bought another one of these sharpeners, largely because of the second thing: the lid broke off. The "hinge" for the clear plastic lid is just thin flexible plastic, but after opening and closing it enough times to dump the shavings, it broke off. This is hardly a design flaw as a metal hinge would be ridiculous and the sharpener worked well for a VERY long time. It is just worth noting

I’d read reviews that mentioned the flimsy cover breaking off but decided to risk the purchase anyway. Unfortunately, this sharpener only lasted about four months before the lid snapped off with no way to clip or glue it back on. Overall, I think it's a great product. It works as advertised and does exactly what a pencil sharpener should do -- it sharpens the pencil, and pretty darn sharp. One thing I would mention and was kind of bummed about however was that, although the lid holds the pencil shavings, it doesn't hold the graphite powder that also accumulates in the sharpener, because it comes out from the sharpening holes if flipped upside down. This is a problem for me because I keep the sharpener in my backpack which is constantly tossed and turned, and it smears onto other items in my bag

 Now, I don't know if this is the best solution to the problem, but I might suggest that there could be a separate lid that covers the holes from the other side, and it could be slid open rather than raised. Therefore, the user could use their thumb to slide it open for easy/quick access, and it would keep graphite powder from falling out. Just food for thought. Despite that, however, it's a solid sharpener and I would recommend it to all wooden pencil users

Lid doesn't cover the sharpening holes. Graphite powder comes out.

 ( By the way, if you should need to replace one or both of the blades, be very careful when torquing down the screw or you could strip it.) I purchased 2 KUM AS2 sharpeners, so with the shipping, the total came to slightly over $20.00 for one usable sharpener. UGH! Was it worth it

 So I tried the second sharpener and it worked like a charm. It turned out that one of the blade's screws was stripped and the blade itself was not making contact with the pencil. I also tried it on my Tri Conderoga pencils, which are very thick pencils. These will not go into their respective sharpener slots

 Yes and no. This German made sharpener is excellent for creating needle sharp tips on your standard pencils. This is a great sharpener for a hobbyist. But for the average homeowner who just needs to write something with a pencil, do yourself a favor and go to your variety store and buy one there

Quality Control could be better

 The 2-step process takes a little bit to get the hang of it. (Use the #1 hole to sharpen the wood, then #2 sharpens the lead itself.) But once you get a feel for it, this turns pencils into lethal weapons, they are so sharp.  That said, the construction of the lid/cover was a bit disappointing

This is an excellent sharpener that has served me extremely well for the past 10 months or so. I've been studying for and taking the LSAT, so have gone through a ton of #2 pencils in those 10 months. The 2-step process takes a little bit to get the hang of it. (Use the #1 hole to sharpen the wood, then #2 sharpens the lead itself

Fantastic sharpener, not great cover on it.

 You can actually sharpen just the lead again if it dulls but eventually you have to repeat both steps.  This pencil sharpener is really designed for artists. It is not really necessary for just writing and you would have to be sharpening it all the time since the point is so narrow. It is great though to be able to get such a sharp narrow point for small details in a pencil drawing

 If you are using soft leaded pencils do not jam the pencil in...apply gentle pressure and you will end up with a long very sharpened pencil point

 Then put your pencil in the hole number two and carefully sharpen again. This hole will only sharpen the lead. If you are using soft leaded pencils do not jam the pencil in.

I like it but the word "automatic" makes it sound like it runs on its own. IT's a manual pencil sharpener. This pencil sharpener was recommended to me in my Craftsy course on colored pencils, and I have used it for both colored pencils and graphite. It does a good job of sharpening without dulling, though I can't get an extremely sharp point
