But due to a combination of age, a wonky ultrabay, and unsatisfactory battery life, I decided to buy a T490s while they were available for cheap. It arrived today. It's still sitting in the box. I just plain didn't do my research.

Got a T490s on Black Friday, and buyer's remorse is setting in.

T490s is a good workhorse that will be a more pleasant machine than the T420. The keyboard will be missed, but the screen, battery, and size are all very good upgrades.

My Lenovo Thinkpad from nearly a decade ago hasn't been working too well for me lately, sometimes struggling with video calls and buffering videos. Also, it's graphics card isn't good enough to run a few games I'd like to play (Civ 6, Ori & the Blind Forest, Journey). Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K.

Why shouldn't I get a T490?

My employer gives T series to the workers. I got a T480 and more recent hires gets T490s.

Both are beasts and I have zero complains. I personally carry it in the backpack a lot, so I wish I had the T490s even if the battery is smaller.

Which one should I buy brand new? T480, T490, T490s?

Unlike the previous poster I found that the chassis is not quite as stiff as I was expecting and if I pick it up and hold it on the right side of the trackpad the screen gets messed up and I have to restart. I don't know about the T490s, but the T490 only has one soldered ram and another slot that is not soldered.

Which one should I buy brand new? T480, T490, T490s?

The limiting factor of T490s for me was the soldered RAM (I had 8Gb model). If budget allows, today I'd recommend T14 AMD - future proof, better speakers etc. Otherwise I'd recommend T490 out of the ones listed and T480s to consider. Macbook Air is inticing

Not to mention they are more expensive than a comparable Thinkpad. This comment comes from someone who has used Thinkpads for +20 years. I have a X1 Carbon 8th gen and a T490s stored in a shelf. They went from being my daily driver to sitting in a shelf once I got a Mac.
