Leatherman Surge

Do most of you feel like you could live without it?. I EDC a Leatherman surge, I would love to carry the wave because it's lighter, but I have no use for the saw, and I use the scissors almost daily.

To begin, let me say that if I were writing this review on a handyman's type website I would give this a different rating. This is a sturdy, robust, heavy-duty, well-made tool. The pliers aren't as good as a good quality pair of dedicated pliers, the screwdrivers aren't as good as most dedicated screwdrivers, the saw isn't as good as pretty much any dedicated saw, the knife and scissors are better than many dedicated knives and scissors BUT... the tool you have with you is way better than nothing, and often better than spending the time to go and find a better tool. I wear a Leatherman Surge on my belt pretty much every day. It stays on my belt when I'm in my workshop with a bunch of tools within reach but it still gets used plenty when I'm not.

Product appears brand new, in original factory sealed packaging. When I opened it up, one of the wire cutter inserts fell out. There was no set screw holding the one insert. I checked the rest of the tool, along with the box and could not locate the set screw. This appears to be poor quality control...

The tool itself is second to none. The sheath is pure junk. Much to large for an already large tool. This is the 8th multi-tool that I have owned, and by far has the worse sheath. This is probably going to displace my Leatherman Surge. While I like the one hand opening blades on the Surge, the minor flaws and quality issues are a bit annoying. The Swisstool appears to be better quality for less money.

I had replace my Leatherman Wave because I accidentaly carried it into the airport. A no-no! I filled out a return mailer and placed my tool in the bag and basically thought it was gone. But to my surprise it showed up in the mail a couple weeks later. In the mean time I ordered the Leatherman Surge...

In my opinion the Leatherman Surge is one of if not the best all around Leatherman. It's large, has full size scissors, still has the replaceable cutters, and it has their blade exchanger that you can use with the file/saw and I believe some certain jigsaw blades as well but I'm not sure.

I've always considered Leatherman tools to be the classic multitool, and I appreciate that they're a local company (at least for me).
