In addition to its weight, the surge suffers from several unfortunate design flaws. When the exterior blades are open, the thin, angular sheet metal on the handle digs into your hand painfully. It's not problem if you're wearing gloves, but on bare hands the ergonomics are honestly awful. This means that if you plan on using a knife a lot, you should carry a secondary folder

 On the downside, the Velcro has almost entirely given out after two years of use. It's gotten to the point that I don't really trust the sheath to retain the knife any longer. I feel like the snap on the leather sheath would be a better option.

 The Wave is noticeably lighter at 8.5oz, and even the new Super Tool 300 is lighter. This means that carrying the surge in you pocket is uncomfortably at best, so the belt sheath is your best option. Obviously ultra-light hikers will find the tool prohibitively heavy, but even I find too heavy to carry unless I'm car camping or simply toting it to the worksite

A comprehensive tool, but not perfect

  I had a Surge that i bought a few years ago that was stolen last year, this new one is a replacement, and I am very disapointed in the sheath.  My other one had a very nice leather sheath, this sheath is junk. I have had it 5 days, and it is already showing wear.  It hangs to high on my belt and is hard to pull the replace the tool

  It's just that for hiking or backpacking I believe it is too big and heavy.  The Surge weighs 12-1/2 ounces.  By comparison, the Wave weighs 8-1/2 ounces.  In the hand the Surge is much heavier and beefier than the Wave

  For the trade-off of those 4 ounces you get an awl and blade exchanger and you give up the small eye-glass screwdriver that is on the Wave.  The blade exchanger is nice, you can use any t-shank blade that you can get at any hardware store and that gives you the ability to carry a relatively large saw blade for emergencies.  If that is important to you and it saves you from carrying a larger saw then it may be worth it to you.  For myself, in my daily use, I found the Surge to be too heavy so I went with the Wave

5" handles and longer knives. This is truly a toolbox on your hip, and has the largest selection of tools that Leatherman offers (21). I've carried the Surge for 2+ years after receiving it as a Christmas gift, and I've used it on camping trips, on the work site doing environmental restoration, and also frequently in the theater doing set construction. The tool has held up admirably over the years, without too much wear and tear that would reduce its usability

Powerful and Comprehensive, Not Perfect

Is the chain link fence made of pipe cleaners? It most likely won't cut it. However, harbor freight sells tiny bolt cutters for cheap. You're probably better off with a specific tool than a multitool in this instance, but if you really wanted to get it done with a multitool you'd need a full sized one. Good candidates include Gerber mp600 or Leatherman Surge

Will Gerber Dime wire cutters cut through a chain link fence?

 This is probably going to displace my Leatherman Surge. While I like the one hand opening blades on the Surge, the minor flaws and quality issues are a bit annoying. The Swisstool appears to be better quality for less money.

Recently picked up a Swisstool. The fit and finish is incredible.

 The second black Surge arrived and it was obviously in new condition. Much better! The handles opened perfectly. Another step up! Unfortunately, the pliers would not engage. I was on the verge of sending this one back and ordering the stainless steel instead

 The handle would not completely open and the knife blade had a broken tip. Very disappointed! However, Amazon does make it very easy to return and I did so.

Hoppes solvent and it works like a charm!

 That'S kind of like a bent spoke. This is for holding your chain when you rejoin one super useful to have that one immortal and it's a really nice secure, fit on the tools you're not going to lose that again. If you look up close you'll see, there are spoke keys on here for 14 and 15 G's and also there for a Mavic and a Shimano. So that's great a little extra feature

 Of course, this achievers focus is very useful for that purpose, and it also has a reaming tool and the prong for inserting those tubeless plugs into the tire. It also has an air saver. So when you do discover, you've got one of those punctures before you can actually get access to tool. You can jam that in the hole to stop any air coming out

 Is you get a pad spacer here? So if you need to do some work on your brake pads, maybe need to surprise them a pop again. You have the right tool for the job, also for traveling to the trails. If you drive, you might want to just bang that in.
