Dell Latitude 7420

For example, I purchased two Dell latitude e5470's a few years ago (one for me, one for the wife). The keyboard can be swapped in less than 5 minutes, so I replaced mine for the backlit keyboard for $20. My wife dropped her machine and broke the bottom casing, which I replaced in 10 minutes for $15. I've replaced the batteries on both twice for $25 each over the course of 4 years.

It's his main work-from-home machine now and handles all the Zoom meetings and everyday computing just fine. The laptop also has a nice metal casing that would work well as a weapon.

\- Dell Latitude 7420. I want one that's longer lasting and has a good keyboard, and more importantly have more battery life on Linux for writing and web browsing. I may use it for GIMP and other applications that would use more power, but I do not plan mine for games and intensive apps.

I would definitely look into business laptop. Used ones can be very affordable. dell latitude, lenovo thinkpad, hp elitebook...

A few days back I noticed the case was popping up - thought I was missing a screw. Turns out the whole battery is swelling, since (surprise surprise) the batteries aren't made as they were used to. Typing on it without a battery right now - I like having one in there in case of power outages - but buying a new one will set me back $60-70. Too soon to ditch this, but not happy with the Latitude's as of late.

I have a brand new Latitude 7420 and it has way too many flaws. Have you thought about getting a Thinkpad instead? I have one from 2015 and if it weren't for the reduced RAM and worse screen I would use it even more than my Latitude. I do not recommend the dGPU because the new Iris Xe is really good, I can even play PUBG with it.

Latitude 7420 is a toast - pretty warm and with almost everything soldered to a motherboard. I wouldn't buy it without at least 3Y warranty. Latitude 5420 is better in this case, but it can't take prolonged load - a strong throttling is applied after a minute or two of load (about 30% performance loss). Precision 7560 took prolonged load rather well and have probably the best touchpad in non-Mac devices.

** My Latitude can't go anywhere without its charging brick, which is a hassle. I need at least 8 hours of battery life to make it through a typical day; that's normally with light usage (web browsing, Word, text editors) and at medium brightness.

Recently (late last year) received a Latitude 7420 to replace a 5 year old Latitude e7270 which had a dead motherboard. I figured that picking up one of the new Intel Evo machines would ensure decent battery life and performance, especially with the i7 option (1185G7E) and larger spec battery and I was hoping for a bit of an uplift in both performance and battery life over the old laptop it replaced. I've had good luck with both Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkPad in that price range. Depending on where you are, Latitude might be slightly better value for money, since used ThinkPads are more talked about and popular.
