A little above the budget of two you mentioned, but not by much, is the Zoom H5. I used the H1 & H2n in the past and upgraded to the H5 for pretty much the same reason you’re getting it for. It’s not perfect but at the price I find it a good performer.

I want to start to make Kontakt (and decent sampler, sforzando...) instruments based on found sounds. I have some recording gear but it's mostly stationary so I've been thinking about getting a budget portable recorder to start researching and recording sounds outside.

I'd need something that's suited to capture sounds near the source itself, as I imagine I'd be performing some gestures on objects myself and then want to record the results. Ambience recording would also be fantastic, but not necessarily something that would work flawlessly to capture music rehearsals. I'm a total beginner to the world of portable and field recorders so I'd get a lot of mileage out something I can carry around easily and that has a nice noise floor, but I can't quite decide on a good unit to purchase.

So far, the zoom H2n has gotten my attention, also the tascam dr 40x, but I'm still very much in doubt. Do you guys have some recommendations around that budget?

Portable recorder to make Kontakt samples recommendations

 It's actually starting slower than my Blackmagic 6K. As for pros, it does have somewhat clean preamps and records a decent sound, has built-in two metal bars preventing the sensitivity knobs to be adjusted by accident. I really like that. It is very easy to use as most of the Zoom lineup recorders I've experienced so far

 It's much more podcast-oriented recorder or in studio because if I was in the field, I would probably want the maximum sample rate possible if I was doing any VFX work or anything. And it's quite slow to start. It's actually starting slower than my Blackmagic 6K.  So the answer to my initial question whether this is a professional, cheap professional-grade field recorder or something that is a bit of a relic that is still quite highly priced and is going to be pushed out, the thing answered itself. I don't think that's a viable product at the moment, given the Zoom F3 release with a 32-bit floating point recording and a much better build quality locking XLR points. And to be honest, this XY mic attachment dongle thing that they're trying to push, it's borderline gimmick for me, to be honest. I could do without one

Zoom H5 Review & Demo | Outdated? 🤷🏻 (feat MKH416)

 Hello again. So today I'll be reviewing this thing. That's the Zoom H5 recorder. I'm actually

 looking to buy one myself and I thought I would do reviews as I go along when I test

 them. It's been around for a while now and a lot of people review them and I thought

 I'd do a refresher. My take of what I like, what I don't like, the specs and so on. And

 most importantly to answer the question that's on everybody's mind, whether this is a cheap

 pro recorder or actually a relic that is way too expensive for what it can offer. For those

 who are new to this recorder and don't know what it can do, it's basically a 24 bit capable

 field recorder with two phantom powered XLR points up to 48 volts and one 3.5 mini jack

 stereo recording. So in terms of pros and cons, I have quite a few actually. Mostly

 cons to be honest. One of the biggest ones being for me is no locking XLR ports. I actually

 did pull it out by accident a few times recording that sequence you seen earlier today. So yeah,

 in a professional grade or actually any newer recorders, you will see the locking XLR ports

 no problem. Also this feels quite plasticy and cheap and to be honest, I wouldn't really

 call it field recorder. It's at best a studio or podcast recorder as I wouldn't take it

 in rain or dust or mud or anything like that. It does look like the construction is really

 lightweight fragile plastic mostly. It only takes up to 32 gigabyte SD cards and you may

 think that's plenty enough even at the highest recording settings you can get up to 33 hours

 of record time. That said, not all of us still have 32 gig cards with all these high resolution

 cameras and media. I'm struggling to find a 32 gig card actually. One weird quirk I

 found with the recorder is being that the amplification is not linear. It's very exponential.

 So what I mean is that once you go past setting five, the sensitivity increases rapidly. Another

 con is that it doesn't have the USB-C port 2022 but yes, it is an older recorder that

 shows actually on the build of the recorder and on its functionality. And in terms of

 functionality actually the biggest gripe for me and keeping in mind that the Zoom F3

 is coming out with a 32-bit recording is exactly that, that it does not contain the 32-bit

 recording. And I know not everybody agrees with the 32-bit sound recording becoming mainstream

 but it is what it is. It will become mainstream. And if you're investing in a piece of gear,

 especially at that price point, you want it to last. And again, the F3 is coming in at

 such a close price range as this recorder, I think it will completely push out of the

 market. Also no 96 kilohertz recording, which again emphasizes the point that I said in

 the beginning that I don't believe that this is necessarily a field recorder. It's much

 more podcast-oriented recorder or in studio because if I was in the field, I would probably

 want the maximum sample rate possible if I was doing any VFX work or anything. And it's

 quite slow to start. It's actually starting slower than my Blackmagic 6K. As for pros,

 it does have somewhat clean preamps and records a decent sound, has built-in two metal bars

 preventing the sensitivity knobs to be adjusted by accident. I really like that. It is very
