The F8n Pro has 8-channel inputs and the ability to record up to 10 tracks of audio.

Question for Zoom F8n owners

The F8n has up to 75dB of gain, using 50 dB or more certainly isn't out of the ordinary especially on quieter sources and a mic distance as far away as this. (1m is almost always to far away to get results that are acceptable die closer up shots). As for power. AA batteries are not useful as more than a fallback die when your switch your main power source.

Looking for the best mixer / audio interface to be able to have 8 XLR mics hooked up

Eight people on mics is a whole lot and can be a royal pain. The Zoom F8n or the Sound Devices MixPre-10 ii with MixAssist plugin have a feature called automix which automatically turns down mics no one is speaking into actively reducing background noise and crosstalk. Depends on what you are actually doing and this isn't cheap, but the best rarely is.

Recommendations for capturing high quality audio? What do you use?

First fieldrecording kit choice choice.

For me the "minimum" is four, so I sold the MixPre3. Personally, I'd suggest the Zoom F8n as a starter field recorder on a budget, not for the extra channels, but simply because the design and ergonomics is really nice. Rather than the ancient 416, check out the Sanken CSM1 and Rode NTG5.

Does anyone use the Zoom F8n as their podcast recorder? What are your thoughts?

It is able to pre record several seconds so if there is a slight delay when you hit record, the first few words will be there and there's much more. Also, there is an app for your iphone or ipad that you can use to control the F8n which makes it so easy. I have it on my iPad Mini 6. It is just perfect.
