 Hey Sean, it's been a year. So let's talk about the zoom f6 field recorder With any one year later review that I do It's always a product that I've used for at least a year and at least 12 different shoots and I've used the zoom f6 For more than two years and well over probably 50 or 60 different productions, and I love this thing so I'm gonna walk through my four big pros for it and My two cons maybe three cons and whether or not I think you should buy it spoiler alert. I think you should buy it So I'm a video producer based in st. Louis, Missouri, and I do a lot of documentary style interview driven videos for my clients And so it's a lot of seated interviews where I have a boom mic overhead and needs to be recorded I'm using mirrorless cameras, and I don't want to record directly into camera

 But also this powers off of USB C And so you don't need like a custom cable or a barrel connector and a big wall wart any USB C connector will put power into this thing and that's handy, but that brings me to my Fourth Pro and this is the biggest one for me. This thing has a built-in battery sled for Sony L series batteries No Other recorder that I know of has that I know the sound device mix pre's have like an Accessory sled you can buy that attaches to the back of it and the batteries like stick off to me that's Having it built in and and being cheaper than those devices is So handy because if you're anything like me You've got a hundred of these Sony L series batteries to run your monitors to run even some of your lights and some of your cameras Throwing one of these on this thing will power it for hours Even even these medium-sized ones and the small ones will go for a couple hours, too It's so nice to know that I can throw a battery on here and with with the built-in battery and 32 float I can have reliable great audio for hours and that is that is such peace of mind for me And I'm a big fan of it. So that brings me to my cons First the build quality is good. I'm just gonna pop one of these things off I'm really afraid I'm gonna do it now during this review and I don't want to do that But the the build quality again, it hasn't broken It just feels these knobs feel like I'm going to break them one of these times I haven't but it feels like I might and the other con is that the the buttons these four buttons you have Play stop forward and backward I think but this these four buttons are how you navigate the menu And so if you're trying to like add in your scene names and stuff like that instead of a dial where you can scroll quickly Through the alphabet

Zoom F6 Review | One Year Later

 Again, if you buy this small Bluetooth dongle with it, then it's way more easy to control. It's double AD conversion, high quality, and it's worth every penny that you pay for it. It comes with a mounting rig, so you can mount it on to your DSLR setup and you can hop and go and just record in whatever situation you want. So it's very well built as well

 The Zoom F6 is such a really nice recorder with six inputs, a nice display, integrates with an app on iOS, with a tablet, for example, if you buy the Bluetooth extending doggo. And it's such a versatile, high quality, field recorder to put in your backpack, on the go, plug in six outputs at the same time and still keep the overview of what's happening and what channels you get on each level. And with this audio interface, clipping is also super hard. So we tested the Zoom F6 in a recording session that you can see here very quickly

 It comes with a mounting rig, so you can mount it on to your DSLR setup and you can hop and go and just record in whatever situation you want. So it's very well built as well. You have time coding, you can monitor directly and there are a lot of settings inside this thing to customize it to your needs.  And we must say it's a super great recorder. It has a really high quality displays. The six input buttons are quite placed close together, but still easy to control. And especially if you're connected with an iOS app that is coming free with it

 I like how compact it is. For me, I don't need more than three inputs. I'm never recording more than three people maximum on a single recording device. So I don't need more than three inputs

 For the money, you can't get better sound recording capability, bar none. I'm not going to argue with anybody on that front. I really like the form factor. I like how small it is

 There's a 3.5-millimeter stereo mini line out for connecting to external mixers, cameras, recording devices, and more. And just above XLR number 1 is a slot for Zoom's BT-A1, a Bluetooth adapter that gives the F6 wireless capabilities, such as controlling it via your smartphone with the F-Control app. Naturally, there's a transport section with buttons for play, pause, record, and stop, and four smaller buttons just outside the screen that let you access, navigate, and manipulate the menu system to choose particular settings

 Sony L-series batteries, not included. Or the optional AC adapter. Battery life, of course, is going to vary based on your particular setup, so there's no standard unit here. But if you're recording all six channels at once, at 48K 24-bit with no phantom power, you'll get about 5 hours with AAs, 7 hours with NIMH, and 10

Buying my first digital recorder to record nature sounds - looking at Zoom H4n, H5, or H6

 They both accept the same microphone attachment capsules but the H5 does not have a color screen. Once again this may be something that you find unnecessary so going with the H5 may save you a couple bucks. I personally wouldn't go for any of the recorders below the H5 because I've heard the quality just isn't as good. The Zoom H5 costs $279 US, the H6 is $329 and the H8 is $399

 With these two you have a very portable and completely wireless setup. No cables, no power plugs, it's very clean setup and easy to take on location, outside, inside, the middle of the mountains, anywhere. For someone just starting out recording audio, you'd be hard-pressed to find one single piece of equipment that can fill so many roles. Add the non-compromising sound quality and portability and it's pretty clear this is a great buy

 The Zoom H6 is a recorder that records high quality audio directly to an SD card and is powered with batteries. For this video I'm recording to the recorder with this Deity D3 Pro Shotgun mic. The Zoom H6 is portable, built well and feels solid without being too large or heavy. It has exceptional preamps with very little self noise when compared to other recorders

  Sound quality is great. It's easy to operate. There are so many options, it's wonderful. The mics that come with it are pretty good

 While this is certainly not a "deal-breaker" sort of issue, it's enough for me to withhold half-a-star. On the other hand, this is also a pretty easy problem to get around if you simply buy any sort of shotgun or lavalier mic to plug in to the device (which I plan to do soon). So this is really only going to be an issue for a small percentage of people. (Though, I could envision someone using this to record vocals for music and being a bit frustrated

 Once again, if you're looking for a portable recording device with high quality sound and lots of options and features, this is probably not a deal breaker for you. More like a minor inconvenience to get everything else you want. You do get used to the poor file management system, but I hope Zoom comes up with something better for future products.  Overall, this is one of the best portable recorders on the market in spite of some minor flaws
