 Hey Sean, it's been a year. So let's talk about the zoom f6 field recorder With any one year later review that I do It's always a product that I've used for at least a year and at least 12 different shoots and I've used the zoom f6 For more than two years and well over probably 50 or 60 different productions, and I love this thing so I'm gonna walk through my four big pros for it and My two cons maybe three cons and whether or not I think you should buy it spoiler alert. I think you should buy it So I'm a video producer based in st. Louis, Missouri, and I do a lot of documentary style interview driven videos for my clients And so it's a lot of seated interviews where I have a boom mic overhead and needs to be recorded I'm using mirrorless cameras, and I don't want to record directly into camera

 But also this powers off of USB C And so you don't need like a custom cable or a barrel connector and a big wall wart any USB C connector will put power into this thing and that's handy, but that brings me to my Fourth Pro and this is the biggest one for me. This thing has a built-in battery sled for Sony L series batteries No Other recorder that I know of has that I know the sound device mix pre's have like an Accessory sled you can buy that attaches to the back of it and the batteries like stick off to me that's Having it built in and and being cheaper than those devices is So handy because if you're anything like me You've got a hundred of these Sony L series batteries to run your monitors to run even some of your lights and some of your cameras Throwing one of these on this thing will power it for hours Even even these medium-sized ones and the small ones will go for a couple hours, too It's so nice to know that I can throw a battery on here and with with the built-in battery and 32 float I can have reliable great audio for hours and that is that is such peace of mind for me And I'm a big fan of it. So that brings me to my cons First the build quality is good. I'm just gonna pop one of these things off I'm really afraid I'm gonna do it now during this review and I don't want to do that But the the build quality again, it hasn't broken It just feels these knobs feel like I'm going to break them one of these times I haven't but it feels like I might and the other con is that the the buttons these four buttons you have Play stop forward and backward I think but this these four buttons are how you navigate the menu And so if you're trying to like add in your scene names and stuff like that instead of a dial where you can scroll quickly Through the alphabet

Zoom F6 Review | One Year Later

 Again, if you buy this small Bluetooth dongle with it, then it's way more easy to control. It's double AD conversion, high quality, and it's worth every penny that you pay for it. It comes with a mounting rig, so you can mount it on to your DSLR setup and you can hop and go and just record in whatever situation you want. So it's very well built as well

 The Zoom F6 is such a really nice recorder with six inputs, a nice display, integrates with an app on iOS, with a tablet, for example, if you buy the Bluetooth extending doggo. And it's such a versatile, high quality, field recorder to put in your backpack, on the go, plug in six outputs at the same time and still keep the overview of what's happening and what channels you get on each level. And with this audio interface, clipping is also super hard. So we tested the Zoom F6 in a recording session that you can see here very quickly

 It comes with a mounting rig, so you can mount it on to your DSLR setup and you can hop and go and just record in whatever situation you want. So it's very well built as well. You have time coding, you can monitor directly and there are a lot of settings inside this thing to customize it to your needs.  I like how compact it is. For me, I don't need more than three inputs. I'm never recording more than three people maximum on a single recording device. So I don't need more than three inputs

. Don't leave your batteries in it! Unfortunately, the internal clock requires them to keep track of time, if you want to time stamp your audio files - a must if you use it a lot. My first (brand new) pair of duracells were toast after I left them in there for just 3 weeks (without use). There's either some form of internal current leak, or the date/time circuit is just plain inefficient

 Sounds are crystal clear, clean, precise - just as you'd expect from a medium dollar condenser microphone pair ($400'ish). I have compared these to the Earthworks QTC30's, which is really unfair - the QTCs are in a completely different league ($1200 for a pair). But I was quite surprised that the QTCs did not put this device to shame as I suspected they would. The Zoom held up very well, actually

 My first (brand new) pair of duracells were toast after I left them in there for just 3 weeks (without use). On the upside, this recorder sounds better than all the others in its class, except perhaps the Sony, in my opinion

Great quality - really worth more than the price tag.

No need to buy all those tools of course, especially just starting out, but I'm giving specs purely for reference :) For now, pick a recorder with an EIN of -120 dBu down to -130 dBu, get a windshield for it and start that journey!

What do you think of this recorder? It's a good start to record sounds in nature and ambients? I read about noisy pre amps, is it right?

..from what I've seen, not as bad as the idea sounds (I haven't used mine yet as I have separate condensers).  I can absolutely vouch for an SM57, these are industry standard tour mics for a reason, you could store these things in your tour bus tires, for lack of space, and have them still working at your next gig, just put your hands around one, the heft, the solidity, they just ooze quality build, and they sound rather nice too

   If you need inexpensive condensers, the Behringer C-2s are rather well reviewed, and will give you a lot of bang for the buck, and come as stereo pairs.  When compared with expensive top-end small diaphragms, they stand up to them, even if they fall a bit short, there are several comparison videos on Youtube, and people don't usually tend to be Behringer shills, unless they actually work for Behringer.

Here is a comparison of the Behringer C2, SM57, and Rode NT-2, the guy's not a vocal virtuoso, but when he brings out the alto saxophone, you can hear a difference between the mics, not that any of them sound BAD, they really all sound pretty good, but the Rode is a clear winner (IMO), I'm only posting it so you can see the price compromises you would be making.

I have been playing guitar for about seven or eight years and once I'm done with undergrad and have a time where my expenses covered and I a few extra hundred laying around, I want to buy an interface and modest recording setup. I don't play anything but guitar and I would like to be able to record my own tracks in the future. I talked to a guy in the store today about interfaces, which I was more well read on a few years ago when I was looking into it more. I play metal and mellow acoustic stuff if that is relevant.

It seems so far like those scarlet ones are the ones that would be my speed. I don't want to spend professional money and I am ok with amateur quality, so long as it is decent amateur quality. That said, what is the quality deficit like between the different scarlet models, esp specifically between 2i2 and 4i4? The one the guy showed me today was a sonus soundbox 96 package with a mic and the xlr cables and headphones, which I had never heard before. I know those are probably not that great by informed standards, but like I said, I just want pretty good and the best bang for buck. What is the opinion on the sonus soundbox? 

What I would want when I buy one is:

better than the bottomest shelf, best sound quality for dollar possible is top priority

a package that comes with a mic, a cord, software that's not gonna require me to like "pay to play" just to use anything (just somewhat respectable for amateur purposes, doesn't need to be pro level), headphones, and preferably speakers

two mic/instrument... holes (just in case and for experimenting) I want to experiment with recording straight in like amp-&gt; cable -&gt; direct to interface AND amp-&gt; mic -&gt; interface (though I know it'll probably be best with the mic).

&lt;$400, preferably closer to 300

Like I said, I have done a bit of research so I don't think what I'm saying is terribly unrealistic, hopefully asking for a decent amateur interface and package for less than $400 isn't like asking for an amazing professional recording level guitar amplifier package for under $400.

Is it worth getting JUST the 4i4 for me and the cords and mic separately or just waiting and saving more money to get it? It doesn't sound like the added output and input things are anything specifically I'm looking for but... difference in Sound quality?

PS, I know I said I wanted one with two instrument/mic jacks, but how would the solo probably be for me by yall's estimates? Since I'm not currently worrying about two jacks, is it worth getting one with two? Thanks

Advice on interfaces for amateur recording?

 This unit has an XY stereo microphone built into it. It also has the ability to record two inputs, in the form of XLR or 1/4-inch. So, we'll be hearing the built in XY microphone on the unit as well as a pair of AKG 414s which I positioned above the piano, pointing into the open lid.  "Kodak Zi8 Internal Microphone" Here we hear the internal microphone on the Zi8

The media could not be loaded. After having done a quick video test for the Kodak Zi8, I decided to do something which would focus more on its audio recording capabilities. I also wanted to test the Zoom H4n, a portable flash recorded I recently purchased.

With all this in mind, I've decided that a pair of external mics is my best bet, and the Rode M5 pair has caught my eye at only $200 USD. My first idea was to go with some LOM lav mics, but they're not available of course. So that leads to my question: has anybody used Rode M5's, and if so what are your thoughts on them? Do you think they could compare with the built-in mics on the H4n Pro? 

I'm currently using a Zoom H4n Pro and its built-in mics, and so far I'm happy with the quality. My recordings are incorporated into my ambient music, and because of that the quality needs to be "good enough", not necessarily top-of-the-line amazing. For that purpose, the Zoom mics are fantastic. HOWEVER, the device suffers from so much self-noise
