 Hey Sean, it's been a year. So let's talk about the zoom f6 field recorder With any one year later review that I do It's always a product that I've used for at least a year and at least 12 different shoots and I've used the zoom f6 For more than two years and well over probably 50 or 60 different productions, and I love this thing so I'm gonna walk through my four big pros for it and My two cons maybe three cons and whether or not I think you should buy it spoiler alert. I think you should buy it So I'm a video producer based in st. Louis, Missouri, and I do a lot of documentary style interview driven videos for my clients And so it's a lot of seated interviews where I have a boom mic overhead and needs to be recorded I'm using mirrorless cameras, and I don't want to record directly into camera

 But also this powers off of USB C And so you don't need like a custom cable or a barrel connector and a big wall wart any USB C connector will put power into this thing and that's handy, but that brings me to my Fourth Pro and this is the biggest one for me. This thing has a built-in battery sled for Sony L series batteries No Other recorder that I know of has that I know the sound device mix pre's have like an Accessory sled you can buy that attaches to the back of it and the batteries like stick off to me that's Having it built in and and being cheaper than those devices is So handy because if you're anything like me You've got a hundred of these Sony L series batteries to run your monitors to run even some of your lights and some of your cameras Throwing one of these on this thing will power it for hours Even even these medium-sized ones and the small ones will go for a couple hours, too It's so nice to know that I can throw a battery on here and with with the built-in battery and 32 float I can have reliable great audio for hours and that is that is such peace of mind for me And I'm a big fan of it. So that brings me to my cons First the build quality is good. I'm just gonna pop one of these things off I'm really afraid I'm gonna do it now during this review and I don't want to do that But the the build quality again, it hasn't broken It just feels these knobs feel like I'm going to break them one of these times I haven't but it feels like I might and the other con is that the the buttons these four buttons you have Play stop forward and backward I think but this these four buttons are how you navigate the menu And so if you're trying to like add in your scene names and stuff like that instead of a dial where you can scroll quickly Through the alphabet

Zoom F6 Review | One Year Later

 Again, if you buy this small Bluetooth dongle with it, then it's way more easy to control. It's double AD conversion, high quality, and it's worth every penny that you pay for it. It comes with a mounting rig, so you can mount it on to your DSLR setup and you can hop and go and just record in whatever situation you want. So it's very well built as well

 The Zoom F6 is such a really nice recorder with six inputs, a nice display, integrates with an app on iOS, with a tablet, for example, if you buy the Bluetooth extending doggo. And it's such a versatile, high quality, field recorder to put in your backpack, on the go, plug in six outputs at the same time and still keep the overview of what's happening and what channels you get on each level. And with this audio interface, clipping is also super hard. So we tested the Zoom F6 in a recording session that you can see here very quickly

 It comes with a mounting rig, so you can mount it on to your DSLR setup and you can hop and go and just record in whatever situation you want. So it's very well built as well. You have time coding, you can monitor directly and there are a lot of settings inside this thing to customize it to your needs.  And we must say it's a super great recorder. It has a really high quality displays. The six input buttons are quite placed close together, but still easy to control. And especially if you're connected with an iOS app that is coming free with it

 I like how compact it is. For me, I don't need more than three inputs. I'm never recording more than three people maximum on a single recording device. So I don't need more than three inputs

The Zoom H2n brings a lot more to the table than a basic audio recorder. All of the buttons, dials, and switches are large, labeled well, and easy to use. Underneath the mesh screen, there are five microphones &mdash; two are positioned in an X/Y configuration, while the others are in a mid-side arrangement. The dial located on the top of the cover allows you to quickly select between the four recording modes, which range from mid-side stereo up to four channels. The H2n truly shines with an ability to record in surround sound. With the pair of X/Y microphones working in concert with the three mid-side microphones, this model doesn't just record audio coming from one side or the other. It actually differentiates between sounds coming from up, down, and all around you. In four-channel mode, it produces two individual tracks per recording meant to be routed to each side of a stereo system or each ear of a pair of headphones. If you have the equipment, software, and know-how, this model is fully capable of recording spatial audio to be used for fully-immersive VR videos. 
The complex capabilities of the Zoom H2n won't appeal to everyone. If you're looking for basic functions to record college lectures, meetings, or job interviews, you probably don't need four-channel spatial audio, surround-sound mode. The H2n still has the most basic digital voice recorder capabilities, but it might just be more recorder than you need or want to pay for. This model is also bulky and heavy &mdash; it is not meant to be slipped into a pocket or purse. The user interface is easy to use once you learn it, but it's far from modern. Compared to the newest, simplest, pocket-sized models, the H2n feels like a bit of a dinosaur. Complaints aside, the Zoom H2n is the way to go for recording 360-degree spatial audio for applications such as VR videos.

 This is basically a portable recording studio and a field recorder wrapped into one. It's better technology and fidelity than anything that was available in the finest recording studios in the world in the 1960's or 1970's and even 1980's. I guess I'm frustrated that Zoom would get this close, so close, to making the PERFECT field recorder, and then they'd blow it with such poor design and ergonomics. To use an analogy out of pop culture, the iPhone was not successful because of it's technology or features

 It has very little to grab onto (only a little serrated texture) and it's frustrating to try and rotate in dim lighting or without a good fingernail.  Overall, I hate to complain about such an amazing piece of technology. This is basically a portable recording studio and a field recorder wrapped into one. If you have headphones, put them on, I'll give you a better sense of the stereo image. So I'm recording using the mid-side technique as RAW files, and I'm not making any changes while I record. But as I play the files back, I'm gradually increasing the level of the side recording

Zoom H2n Handy Recorder

  This unit operates on a pair of AA batteries and it’s amazing how long the batteries last given the quality of recordings. Zoom claims about 20 hours of battery life which I find to be a bit optimistic, but even still at around ~15 hours the battery life is great.  The interface on the device is quite nice. It has a backlit LED screen and navigation is simple with a selector switch that allows you to move up/down or press it in to make a selection

 Plus it’s annoying dealing with all the extra wires/cables and such. Also, I believe it’s a law that when you introduce a computer into the mix then you’re going to have glitches and other issues. The H2n solves all my problems, all I have to do is plop it down and hit record and I feel confident that my recordings are going to sound good every time.  The negatives are pretty minor

An amazing recorder that solves a lot of problems

 So if you're just looking for a microphone to put on your desk and improve the sound of the microphone, that's a good option. It does improve the audio for videos but you're not going to want to hold this up to your face every single time you record a YouTube video. So the eighth inch might actually be a good option because you could plug a little lavalier mic in there, like 20 bucks on Amazon. So that's a good option to actually improve the quality of your videos if you're doing a video podcast

Zoom h2n Podcast Mic Review & Test

  It seems this unit slipped by quality assurance at Samson (company that makes the Zoom recorders) and has marginal or defective components for one or more of the built-in mics. Unfortunately, when I tried to arrange a replacement through Amazon, they were out of stock! Had to just setup a return and purchase the H2n from a different source. I suggest that anyone who purchases an H2n carefully test the unit using all mic patterns in case they have the same failure as the one I received.

 I then closely examined the recording level meters while in a quiet room. The left channel was registering something at about -35dB and the right channel was registering something at about -25 to -30dB! I monitored the recorder with headphones and heard the "cooking bacon" sound clearly in both channels, but more loudly in the right channel. I made several test recordings using different SD cards, different mic arrays, and different file formats (WAV, mp3). This confirmed that one or more of the microphones within the unit was producing a significant amount of noise

 Slowly changing the orientation of the H2n (vertical, horizontal, rotating it) while monitoring the input would occasionally result in the noise stopping. Recordings made in this "window" of correct operation were the excellent, clean, clear results that other reviewers talk about.  It seems this unit slipped by quality assurance at Samson (company that makes the Zoom recorders) and has marginal or defective components for one or more of the built-in mics.
