The Work Sharp EDC Pivot is the model we recommend for camping, traveling, hunting, and fishing. It is small enough to disappear into all but the tightest travel bags. It is versatile and can sharpen blades as well as fish hooks. The main, coarse sharpener surface is mounted on a flexible spring attachment that helps correct for sharpening sloppiness. You can also "lock out" the flexible attachment if you wish. 
The most peculiar thing about the Work Sharp EDC Pivot is that its two main sharpening "V"s are set at different angles. For the most part, those with multiple texture options mount those options at the same angle as one another. This allows you to make rough and fast adjustments to a blade and then polish and refine that edge with the fine-textured sharpener. STUFF WE DO.

 Yes the knives are carbon steel and sharpen relatively easily, however the pivot pro really made quick work of the bunch. With no more than right passes on the carbide cutter and three on the ceramic the knives were extremely sharp. This is a huge plus being that they full so quickly cutting on dinner plates. I must admit that I was very skeptical about this sharpener before trying it. The price point along with the method it used to sharpen had me curious as to the quality of the edge that it would produce. Since opening the package I have been able to put the sharpener through a gauntlet of tasks. The first task was to sharpen six Old Hickory paring knives which we use as steak knives

  This could be a 5 star sharpener, but the only reason I have to knock a star off is because of the placement of the red carbide adjuster switch on the top. Because of it's location, the rubber grip that is glued around it is very thin because it takes up most of the space, and when using the honing side, the one side isn't as grippy. The overall design of this sharpener is great though, but I don't understand why they didn't choose to put the selector switch on the front face of the body.  On a side note, the packaging is very well done

 The pivot system works well for pieces that need more aggressive shaping; using the lockout slider is fine for most jobs. The axe sharpener worked great on an axe, but less well on a hatchet that needs more severe re-profiling. The diamond plate works well, though I don’t anticipate it will hold up to lot of hard use (which it won’t see anyway). The removable sharpener for pruners works well

For ~$10?  A no-brainer.

 The price is the killer part, I would of easily paid $10 for this thing so buying it for $4 at the time of purchase was pretty sweet.

If you are willing to try, look into the Work Sharp Precision Adjust sharpener. It’s a relatively budget friendly sharpening setup, and with some practice/research, sharping 20CV will be no problem

I recently bought a brand new Benchmade Griptillian in 20CV, and the blade edge just completely sucks. The edge is so bad, that I can hardly use it. I couldn't slice a rubber hose with it, which was its first task. It struggles to break down boxes. I couldnt slice the candle wax off of a fancy beer with it last weekend, and this morning I couldn't cut thin rope that was tightly affixed across a package.

There are no local knife sharpeners in my town. I don't own any stones, nor know how to use them, and honestly don't have time to undertake learning that at the moment.  I know I can send it back to Benchmade and have them sharpen it, but honestly, I'm seeing the product of them sharpening it right now, in its brand new out of box condition -- and it sucks.

So, is there anyone on here who runs a reputable sharpening biz? Is there a product I could buy that is dummy proof and will work on 20CV without breaking the bank?

I really like the look and feel of the knife. The blade is perfectly centered, there's no play in it, and I really enjoy everything about it, other than its complete lack of an edge.

How to sharpen 20CV

To be clear - this is review is exclusively just my own personal experience with the precision elite setup, and I have no doubt the vast majority of people have no issues with this product granting they aren't primarily sharpening higher-end kitchen blades and aren't prone to stressing over perfection in achieving a mirror finish.  The design itself is great in most ways - it's not made from cheap garbage plastic, the sharpening plates are stellar, and the tri-rod design is substantially better than any other fixed grit sharpener I've seen or used.  Unfortunately there were a few problems with my unit that caused enough of a headache that made this a poor purchase in my case.  I'll be the first to admit I'm far from a grandmaster blade sharpener in any sense, if I were I wouldn't've needed to buy a fancy honing guide - but I've got roughly 5 years under my belt of maintaining primary and secondary chisel bevels to a preferred 20k grit before stropping on 60k compound, so I'm familiar with how it's done

 It might've been the intended use, but it may also prevent me from returning or getting a full refund as well.  I'm somewhat disappointed they didn't include a "blank" tri-rod that would allow you to either plate higher grit plates or stones, possibly a flat side for those who like to use adhesive backed SiC with grits around 2k-20k. There's even a fourth tri-rod slot that's empty when shipped.  It's also somewhat unfortunate that the company hasn't designed a secondary adjustment column that would fit chisels in an appropriate way, and shift the angle adjustment up to 25 or 30-45°

If I had a unit like this that supported a chisel when I first started out woodworking, I'd wager I'd have saved literal days in time spent trying to halfhazardly reshape the bevel for a chisel I'd dropped on the floor for the second time that day like a dingus

I really like the use of magnets for that Now when it comes to the actual sharpening we've got a few different choices to pick from here We can start at 220 these actually rotate so then we can go up to 320 and then on this one goes up to 400 They have this little like ball joint on here and this piece of metal actually goes right up inside the stand And then there's a magnet up top here so you just slip that in and then that magnet locks that into place Now typically on the high-end professional sharpeners that I have I want to basically Make a nice long path from the back of the blade all the way out to the tip You can also do it in segments though because we have this pretty pronounced belly here. It's kind of short I'm going to start on 400 and just sort of work this back and forth Now I'm noticing that I'm not actually hitting that sharpie edge on here So what I'm going to do is adjust the angle of this to adjust the angle You can go from 30 all the way down to 100 Adjust the angle you can go from 30 all the way down to 15 probably even a little bit higher and lower Probably going to sharpen this at about a 20 degree angle so I'm going to twist this down That will change the angle now let's try this again Now that is a pretty good angle I don't know if you guys can tell but I've gotten rid of Most of that sharpie there's still a little bit on the tip there so I will work on that And now that I know that my angle is set I can actually sharpen this thing the way that I normally would I should note that I'm really not pushing down on this at all

 It's popping a few hairs there I think this kit is going to be great for anyone like myself who's just a knife enthusiast and you want to have a decent Edge on your blade, but you don't need like a eight hundred dollar professional sharpening system I have something like that And now that I have this I don't even really use it puts a great edge on there if you're not doing it in front Of a camera with a bunch of stuff in your way You can fine tune them even more and get these knives insanely sharp So if you have any questions on it, let me know in the comments down below I'll try to answer anything as best as possible I'll also leave some links in the description where you can pick one of these up on amazon right now starting at forty nine dollars All the way up to I believe 119 which is for the full Elite kit which you just saw me use so that's all for today if you're new here consider clicking subscribe and make new videos every week As always thanks for watching. I'm going to flip this again and continue You really want to make sure you get towards the back of the blade as well Widening the edge just a little bit and it's all the way down I'm widening the edge just a little bit and it's already looking a heck of a lot better Now if I rotate this we can move right up to 800 You can already tell that edge is shining through now Definitely hard to tell on video, but I'll give you guys a close-up once we're done Now also on this same stone we have ceramic Flip this and we're going to start to work almost a mirror edge on here The higher in grits you go the more you will notice that the stones start to just glide across there It's a good indication that you are sharpening the way you should be And again, I'm doing like little to no effort

My Favorite Knife Sharpener | Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite

 This one I was batoning with the other day so it is quite dull so again we're just going to place this in the blade clamp and get it as parallel as we can get it. There we go. Pop that in here. Now I am going to start maybe on a 600 on this one, I don't need to go super course on this one so I'm going to go start with a 600 and see what we get

 There's also a spring button in the back here so that allows you to press that and rotate your knife around to work on the other side. And then you have the tri-bracive sharpening rod. So there's a sharpening rod. You have rubber stoppers here that you can adjust and then you have three different sharpening surfaces here

Worksharp Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener Review

 It looks like it would be very awkward and I too was concerned that a tiny slip could end up with an ER visit for stitches. When holding the handle, there is plenty of room between your hand and the blade to feel safe while sharpening. You would almost have to be intentionally pointing your fingers downward to contact the blade during the push stroke. If your hands get so tired that your fingers are hanging down like that, you need to take a break anyway

 You will have to either hold the sharpener base or the knife handle while using it. I'm not sure why you would need to control the blade when it is clamped into the system, or even what you would do to control it other than hold onto the sharpener base or the knife handle.*****  "2) I'm a little concerned with the direction of travel for the stone being engineered into the edge of the blade with no practical guard on a small curved top stone assembly. This shows very poor engineering controls for safety and would be an OSHA violation in any industrial environment

 I sharpen on a mat so I can't speak to whether or not a minimal amount of dust will make them slippery on a table but on the mat it was not an issue. This is definitely not a one handed sharpener. You will have to either hold the sharpener base or the knife handle while using it. I'm not sure why you would need to control the blade when it is clamped into the system, or even what you would do to control it other than hold onto the sharpener base or the knife handle

 I bought this early Feb 2021 and before reading the review, I was certain that it was going to be missing pieces or some other failed QC. This is not a knock on worksharp's QC, it's because I couldn't imagine anyone that has put hands on the device and used it to sharpen a knife giving it a one star review.  Let's get started. I'm going to do something a little different and address the 1 star review

 In my previous video, I said that the 600 didn't quite feel like a 600. It felt like a higher grip than that. Yet I wanted a different, I would have liked to have a stone in between the 600 and the ceramic, because I didn't feel like the ceramic, it wasn't able to get out all the scratches without a long, long time. You have to spend a lot of time on the ceramic stone to get it to be polished, basically

 If you have a stropping compound system that does that, you can get it really nice and consistent because you can just strop basically some of the scratch pattern away. But I do think this system is very good. I do think that it will work for a lot of people. You just gotta be careful, like I said, with the movement and know that your stones aren't gonna last a very long time

You will get, I'm imagining that if you're not doing a bunch of reprofiling and you're just sharpening the same angle that's on the blade, you could probably get about 50 sharpening's out of it altogether, which, and then like that, you know, that's difficult to say too. I don't know if you'll get quite that many because it depends on your pressure, you know, the steel of the knives you're sharpening

LONG TERM UPDATE WORK SHARP PRECISION ADJUST SHARPENER

 This knob is the providing the force that holds the the knife in place It's basically making these two jaws on either side clamped down around the thing It's not so dissimilar from how a number of these other sharpening systems have done that but you know Yeah, and then what you do is you actually you want to make sure that the white dot is on top Apparently is their approach. My main conclusion here is that oh my god This is a gem wow And in fact, this is now my recommendation and it has been as i've been working on this review For a sharpening system in that sort of low to mid range, right? Um, of course you can do really well just with a bench stone if you're willing to put in the time and the effort to learn Just a a good old-fashioned stone Like this guy happens to be from a spyderco, but a good old-fashioned stone will give you great results And you can really do a great job sharpening It's not the case that you need something like this to sharpen a knife clearly a civilization has taught us otherwise But at the same time, uh in terms of you know, i'm brand new to sharpening and I just want good results This is a very very nice approach, right? So if you don't want to go that bench stone route where you can't get it a little cheaper This is where I would have you start. I would say save up and get this particular piece here Right, um because saving up to this at 50 bucks is a better choice than any of the other cheaper systems out there That i'm aware of right now And if you buy this uh, this kit here and you get yourself a decent leather straw It's just a literally a stick with a piece of leather with some compound on it Then by god you are going to be able to put an amazing edge on your knives and you'll be able to keep it there for a Long time this will sharpen as well as you possibly need and with a strop to maintain that edge You will be very very happy. I suspect with the sharpness of your tools, right? Down the road though
