 The action is great out of the box. The signal is very clean (very low sound floor) and paired with a decent amp sounds great. Compared to my first bass I bought second hand for $300 this blows it out of the water. I wouldn’t play my first bass on stage anywhere

The cheapest alternative:

Fender SQ CV 70s Jazz Bass V MN (5 String Squire)

The upgraded alternative:

Fender Player Series J-Bass V PF (5 String MIM)

The all-out version (will take me a long time to save up for):

Sandberg California II VM 4 (4 String P/Hummer pickups)

These are some of the options I have. I prefer to have a Jazz Bass style body and neck. I was thinking a 5 string allows more options. But these last 4 string options allow me to go with different pickups. I am not sure what to get. I am also open to other suggestions.

Trying to decide on bass for metal

 That said the satin finish is excellent and my thumb glides on it with ease. I haven't hit any fret edges. Just in general the quality of the build is excellent and excluding a fancy top or finish the build is about as good as I would expect of basses going up to about the $1,000 mark.  The electronics are certainly not the best you could get, but without spending as much on a new preamp and pickups as this whole instrument itself (or more) they do an excellent job

 I don't play with the 2 band EQ much, but both treble and bass EQ do the jobs they're supposed to. The two pickup positions and blend each have their own tonal sweet spots and I've had fun with everything from Primus, Marcus Miller, NIN, to ye olde 12 bar blues all play just fine.  Overall a really excellent 5-string that I don't see myself moving away from any time soon.

Really stellar instrument at the price point

Great sound awesome feel, be warned you may have to adjust the tension rod and bridge a bit I had a lot of drag and had to make adjustments. After setting it up it had a great and amazing sound and feel.

 When I saw that I ordered one immediately. When I got it in the mail I fell in love immediately. The neck of this bass is super playable even with the added width from the extra string. The low B is punchy and clear thanks to the 35 inch scale length and all of the strings benefit from better sustain because of it too

 When I plugged it in I immediately fell in love with the tone and playability of the bass. I looked it up online in the store and discovered that they made a 5 string version and GC sold it at the same price as the 4. When I saw that I ordered one immediately. When I got it in the mail I fell in love immediately

 Mine came well set up for just out of the box and just needs some slight tweaks to make it perfect. The tuning stayed rock solid and once the strings got broken in I haven't had to retune it once. I would recommend checking out this bass no matter what your budget is because this bass sounds and plays better than bases I've owned for three times the price.

Killer bass at any price

 17th fret, we want 12 thou, somewhere between 10 and 14 is where they want it to be, basically to get it to where it is and doesn't buzz. That's just barely fitting under the string there. Now our string height is also super low and fast. Now I do have the B string sitting at 664ths, also the same on the E and then we're at 564ths on the D or the A, the D is at 564ths and the G is between 4 and 564ths, not quite down there but not quite as high

 I am going to go ahead and, we're also going to change strings, so I've got to check the gauge to see if I can start my setup here on this set of strings, and then switch over. The first thing we do is realize that that's not the right size, okay that's the right size for that, and we're going to need a Phillips head to take the truss rod cover off. This is a fairly new bass, I don't know if anyone's been in here or not, well he bought it from Sweetwater so that it would have been through their setup process, that they do for anything over $400. Okay, what do we have in there, it looks like a 4mm, I happen to have a 4mm right here, let's see if it's a 4mm, and of course the A string is right in the middle of the truss rod access, it is and, so the truss rod works, I'll relieve the tension on the strings here, and give it a little righty tighty, and I'll tune everything up and see where we're at

 Hopefully that will do it. Alright boys and girls, we took our files, there's another one laying around here somewhere, here it is, and we brought the big fat floppy B string, because I didn't want it to flop so much and be clanging against the frets. Brought that down to 22 thou, and brought everything else down to 21, and then finally on the G we brought it down to 20. So very playable whenever you play your first and second frets, you're not going to be pulling it out of tune simply by playing the note

 Here we have the quick access truss rod cover and the Just-a-Nut 3 fully adjustable solid brass nut system. This enables us to raise and lower the action at the nut, enabling the player to set up the bass for the perfect playing feel for their style and needs.  Here we have the quick access electronics compartment cover, which pops off in a matter of seconds. You can change your battery and put it back on without needing any tools.  I think I seem to be a feature with Warwick basses, is that they're very clean. And if that's the sort of thing you're into, that kind of very clean, almost like American session musician tone, whereas I think the passive gives you a bit more of a growl, which is really nice. I just got a warwick thumb, my 3rd warwick and i gotta say out of the 20+ basses i own this has to be my favorite, and i own everything from a squire j bass, to a fender american ultra p bass, and a couple of rickenbackers. Absolutely adore the thumb, the tones are incredible and the neck is super comfortable, only con i can think of, is MAN this thing is heavy.

98 German Warwick Thumb BO. The playability of that bass (while sitting down - what an atrocious neck dive while on a strap) was out of this world. Finger, tap, slap, every sound just wanted to jump off the bass.

What is the best playing bass you have ever laid your hands on?

 It's really well balanced, it's not going to slide off your leg like some other basses do. And it's not incredibly heavy, so playing long gigs with this bass is going to work out well. What I'm playing through, it's an Eden 2x8, it's 180 watts. The reason why I wanted to pick this one to play with the Warwick is it's really crisp, really clean, so it's going to complement each other quite well

 It has a three knob selector, volume, which is a push pull going from active to passive. This is a fader between the neck and bridge pickup. And then this stack pot is a bass and treble. So there's quite a bit of variety of tones you can get out of this thing
