 As night mode on, the FE's ultrawide is flat out superior to the S20 Plus, with consistently better sharpness. When zooming at night with the telephoto, the FE produces better results as well, with improved detail, lower noise, and wider dynamic range than the S20 Plus. The difference isn't as pronounced with night mode on though. Both produce some pretty good photos

 Overall, it looks elegant, though you will notice that the bag is made of plastic here, not premium Gorilla Glass. The frame is aluminum though, and you still get full IP68 water and dust resistance you'd expect from a high-end Samsung phone. On the front is a flat 6.5 inch Super AMOLED display with a small punch hole for the selfie cam

 The resolution is a bit lower than the regular S20 at 1080p, but it still brings that fast 120Hz refresh rate. And it's worth noting that if you turn the regular S20's display to its fast 120Hz refresh rate, its resolution will dial down to 1080p as well. The high refresh rate makes scrolling and moving elements on screen look much smoother to the eye. It isn't adaptive to content like some other solutions we've seen though

 We had a less than pleasant experience from the ultrawide though. The frame rate isn't steady with the stabilization on, and you get some jerky movement every now and then. The telephoto is somewhere in between. The frame rate is constant, but is still a little shaky

The Pixel 4a has Google’s clean, fast version of Android 10 with three years of guaranteed updates. Music (Spotify), I want to play emulator games (just Pokémon, nothing crazy), some picture taking. 

What’s important: good battery life- a shitty battery is my biggest pet peeve.

So on the Jason Statham Toughboy scale, this bad boy definitely gets at least a four. My only real complaint here is that the S20 FE 5G feels like a cheapy mid-range smartphone rather than something that costs 700 quid. That's an unfortunate but not particularly unsurprising consequence of the galactic finish, which mostly, to be fair, just feels like plastic

 And around front as well, super, super safe, because not only do you have Gorilla Glass 3 coating this thing, but you've also got a pre-installed screen protector. Although speaking of which, that screen protector is getting proper banged up now, which is starting to annoy me, so that's probably going to come off pretty pronto. And the S20 FE even boasts the same full IP68 water and dust resistance as those flagships as well, so you can take a full on dunking in a bath sink, whatever. So on the Jason Statham Toughboy scale, this bad boy definitely gets at least a four

 And the night mode also does a great job in low light, producing bright and crisp snaps, with impressively natural looking tones. The S20 FE 5G also supports a 12MP ultra wide angle lens, which lets in less light and so produces darker images. It's next to useless indoors, but it does add some flexibility when you're outdoors. And I actually found that Samsung's telephoto lens was more capable here on the fan edition versus the S21, as you get a proper 3x optical zoom

 And last up is that 32MP selfie snapper, which can offer quite a wide view if you want to squeeze a few peeps into frame, and you've once again got those portrait mode smarts on board too. On the whole, a solid effort, although occasionally when shooting against a bright background I did end up looking a wee bit soft, so to speak. So there's what I think of Samsung's Galaxy S20 fan edition 5G model three months after it was first released here in the UK, gotta say I really, really like it, it does have some very strong competition, especially from the likes of Xiaomi's new Mi 11 flagship phone, which upgrades the specs to a Snapdragon 888. We got the sharper QHD display and everything as well, and all for about the same sort of price point

Battery life also seems to be decent - especially if you turn off the high 120hz refresh rate (I'm not bothered by 60hz) and do a little bit of tuning to maximize battery life.

<div class="md">I&#39;d recommend throwing the Galaxy S20 FE in the ring for that set of requirements as well. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago thanks to a fairly similar set of requirements, and am happy with it so far. No issues at all using my 256GB SD card. It&#39;s about your price range, I just picked up the Verizon version for $700 exactly.

I'm coming from a joint situation with a Pixel 3 and an LG V30, and I'm looking for a phone that:

* must have decent Snapchat picture quality (I know, it's a weird metric, but the splotchiness of the V30 was an *issue*)
* must support internal expandable storage (*preferably* microSD cards)
* feels buttery smooth with day-to-day tasks (*preferably* stock Android)
* doesn't die within 3 hours of YouTube videos
* *preferably* uses USB-C to charge

Any recs from new 3-year old phones to used flagships that fit this bill would be appreciated!

Currently looking at the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip and the Xperia 1ii, but I'm not too sure how long the camera module on the Flip would last, and the last time I saw an Xperia's Snapchat quality (2015), I was rather disappointed.

*I bought the V30 in 2019 to consolidate two replacements:*

* *to replace my OG Pixel:*
   * *which did not have SD card support and had about a 2 hour battery life. Other than that, it was buttery smooth until one fateful day where after a wintry power outage, it refused all attempts of resurrection*
* *and to replace my Galaxy S4:*
   * *which had SD card support and had about a 8 hour battery life. However, it was starting to get sluggish, and then after an accidental rinse in a porcelain throne, it no longer charges*

*However, as I noted, the normal camera was pretty bad on my camera, and the Snapchat quality was absolutely atrocious - the only way I got around the...soggy pictures, so to speak, was to sideload a Google Camera .apk - but that was only a half step. On the bright side, having a DAC and my 256GB SD card meant I was mostly able to enjoy my music library. That is, until a year later when the phone would begin to get sluggish and occasionally freeze - leading to at least one power-on that took about 5 minutes. Needless to say, I purchased the Pixel 3 in 2020. The Snapchat experience was amazing (yes, the Pixel's secondary processor was helpful here), the lack of SD card terrible, it held power for about 4 hours, and* mea culpa*, I discovered my copy had a broken SIM card slot; so it remains a Wi-Fi only device...not extremely useful.*

*Thus, after a year of attempting to hold two halves of a decent phone together, I'd like to reconcile the two abilities, hence my ask list above.*

Best $700 phone with SD card support?

Last October, I decided to trade in my Pixel 4 for a Galaxy S20 FE thinking that it would be a faster more enjoyable phone, and also I had battery issues with the 4. Sure the phone felt quick and snappy at the beginning but after a couple months, the phone was feeling very sluggish. I think the culprit of this is actually OneUI's heavy focus on "extra features" on top of Android. Bottom line is I wasn't happy

 iphone users always seem ready to put the Android down but I find the Samsung a much better price point. Each one seems to get a little better. Especially the camera optics. No exception with this one

 My wife is now using my previous A50 model and is very satisfied. Previously all the Samsungs were the S series. I have never cracked a screen that I recall and that makes me believe they are sturdy.

 I was an early adapter but not a nerd. I choose Samsung over other manufacturers and have been very satisfied. iphone users always seem ready to put the Android down but I find the Samsung a much better price point. Each one seems to get a little better
