 I finally ended up having to by a whole new high hat unit.  Bottom line, if not for these two stripped parts I would have given 4 stars as the drums do sound nice with the exception of the cymbals which are kind of cheap.

For the money this is a nice drum kit

 The snare drum sounds good but lacks in the deep tones...I'm sure that's nothing a better drum head can fix

 If I can get these shells to sound great with the stock heads, I can only imagine how great they'll sound with better drum heads. The cymbals are complete trash but I still use em 😅. The toms are bright. The kick drum isn't as big sounding as a normal sized kick drum, but it's pretty punchy

  This kit is a perfect example of showing the importance of tuning, versus the kind of shells or drum heads you have. While the shells are relatively cheap compared to most drums, and the stock drum heads are okay, with the right tuning methods, you can get these drums to sound amazing. If I can get these shells to sound great with the stock heads, I can only imagine how great they'll sound with better drum heads. The cymbals are complete trash but I still use em 😅

.I'm sure that's nothing a better drum head can fix. Overall it sounds great.  You cannot beat the price! The quality of the hardware is good

Pearl Jazz Kit is Awesome!

 This kit can easily grow with you though, and I've already made a number of changes/additions. I immediately changed out the stock bass and tom drum heads with Remo heads and the snare with an Evans HD Dry. I also replaced the snare wires with PureSound Custom Pro. I purchased a telescoping cymbal stand and then bought a package of Meinl cymbals and hi-hats

The difference in sound quality between stock and upgrades is outstanding, even with lower-end cymbals.  If you are getting old and creaky like me and have back problems, I highly recommend you spend the money on a solid throne because you won't want to drum for long on the stock throne unless you enjoy having a numb butt, sore tailbone and aching lower back

Learning to Drum at Fifty-One!

I'll start by saying this is a great drumset for the money. It was purchased for a church and the only thing it's missing is a nice crash symbol. Otherwise it's great quality.  Let me start by saying this drums can't be beat for the money

I'm fully aware that I wasn't buying a top of the line professional drum set, but I still had expectations from pearl. I'm going to kind of break down my reviews into a few sections. Would not recommend to anybody with any musical knowledge in anything. Such a poorly made set.

 The snare and rack toms are pre-tuned, so only the floor tom and the bass need tuning. I've never done that before and just by listening carefully I feel I am pretty darn close if not dead on with how those drums sound.  In many other reviews I read where some (apparently more seasoned) drummers report that the cymbals need to be replaced. I'm sure that's so if you're gigging or recording with the thing right off the bat, but for a boy learning the drums I feel like I can take my time on any upgrades like that

Wow. Excellent value here. Great first drum set for my son. Went together pretty darn easily, packaging was good, and for the price I was pretty stunned at the quality of fit and finish all the way around

 Pound for pound there is absolutely nothing to complain about here. In my mind Pearl did a great job delivering high quality at a very reasonable price point.

 Bass drum is horrible. It's 18" bass drum and just can not get decent sound out of it. Hi hat stand is good and bass pedal is good. I'm already bought new cymbals

 Throne is way too small. If you are a big guy you might lose it in the middle of a gig, if you know what I mean. No way can I play a 3 hr gig with that seat. I'm now thinking about either getting a bigger bass drum or the drums were cheap enough that I could buy a better set

Great set for a beginner or intermediate drummer or even a pro drummer with some modifications.

The value is clearly with the Tama kit, but the Gretsch kit is absolutely the better sounding set of drums. Not that the Rockstars were a bad sounding kit - far from it - but I find the Catalina Maples to be warmer and have more tone to them - something I really look for in toms, in particular.

Do I go for a Tama Rockstar kit (2 toms, floor tom, snare and bass drum) with all hardware included - Hihat stand, Pedal, 3 cymbal stands, splash cymbal  attachment, snare drum stand. It even comes with all cymbals, B8 hi-hats/Crash, B8 Pro Ride, Zildian China &amp; Splash and a cowbell all for 450EUR. Bass drum has new heads with sound hole as well as large/medium damping rings.

It's a simple black kit.

Then there is a Gretsch Catalina Maple, 2 rack toms, 2 floor toms, snare, Bass drum. No hardware or Cymbals for 400EUR. It's a nice Satin Deep Cherry Burst.

I prefer the look of the Gretsch kit, I haven't heard either in person. Will require a bit of a drive so definitely not something I want to drive out just test how they sound. Gretsch does seem like a better kit in general to me, extra floor tom is nice too. But the value of the Tama is pretty crazy?!?!? Is it a really bad kit or is this guy just desperate to sell?

Deciding on which drums to get is tough! Tama Rockstar vs Gretsch Catalina Maple

If you're gigging you'll hate this. One huge bass drum is kind of a pain in the ass, I can't imagine lugging around two! If I were you I'd get a used Tama Rockstar or other better quality kit and get a nice double kick pedal.
