Hello, I am the new owner of a duplex, and I will be living with seven roomates. All eight of us are online gamers and require a blazing fast internet connection. Since we also have friends that are college students like us we need both hard wired and WiFi. 

This is the current setup for the house: 

2 Duplex sides, each side is 2002 square feet and has 4 bedrooms. Each needs a hardline port and WiFi. 

We have one ISP, COX. We will be opting for the Gigablast plan at 940 Down and 35 Up.

8  TP-Link TL-SG108 8-PORT 10/100/1000 Gigabit Desktop Switch, one for each room.

2 ASUS RT-AX3000 Dual Band Gigabit Wireless AX Router w/AiMesh Support, using each of its four ports for each switch. One on each side of the duplex. 

1 Motorola MG8702 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem Plus AC3200 Dual Band WiFi Gigabit Router, this has four ethernet ports, I think I connect both routers to this. 

Cat 6 wiring for the entire setup. 

Is this the right way to go? Is there any glaring errors in my shopping list?

I just set up a Motorola MB8611 (2.5 Gbps) a few days ago. It stays cool and is rock solid so far.

Looking for advice to upgrade my modem for internet thru my provider. Been researching and leery after reading reviews on netgear and arris modems and faulty chips and such. Is it all hit or miss and all brands have duds that fail?  Not opposed to getting a modem /router combo. But if modem part faults i am out the router and vice versa. 

My isp only offers up to 1 gbps and i am probably only going up to 400 mbps for now. They told me it 400 mbps wont work until i got docsis3.1

Since we are upgrading our speeds constantly, these types of comms can come out from time to time. The Motorola MB8611 is definitely an advanced mode and able to handle our up to 1.2GBs download speeds.

I am rocking my isp's router (TalkTalk) and My PC doesn't get the best coverage - I am mainly concerned about lags that occur from time to time and when I am hosting games my friend complains it's laggy as well. 

Basically I have a few devices connected to the router directly (TV, xbox, smart speaker), in the future I might add another 1 or 2 more.

The next room is my daughter's PC and of course I am in the most prominent place at home - right in the corner.

Obviously we have 4 phones in use, 1 more smart speaker via WiFi and a termomix via WiFi as well. 

Can you please advise what should I do? I know ethernet cable would be the best solution but it's out of question (unless a last resort). Would I need to invest in a mesh or a better router instead?

I am in UK and look at no more than 200 to invest.

Now that I work from home full time, I'm wondering if I should re-architect my home network to put my work devices on a separate VLAN from my personal stuff (probably makes me sound quite paranoid, but oh well). I know my router doesn't support that with the native firmware, so I would have to flash a different firmware if I want to stick with what I have.

I recently got a speed upgrade from Comcast that brings my download speeds beyond what my current cable modem (NETGEAR CM500), though my current speed is certainly still more than fast enough. I can't get fiber at my apartment building though sadly. I have the modem paired with an ASUS RT-AC86U router currently. The CM500 does get a bit warm though I will say, so that's partly why I've been looking at it as a potential upgrade opportunity

This modem was an upgrade from my NetGear CM400 so I could get the 200Mbps that my internet plan provided for. The CM400 was also an upgrade a few years ago for another NetGear modem.  It took three days and calls to Xfinity, Lynksys and NetGear (all with long waits on hold) before the NetGear tech I spoke figured out why I was still only getting 100Mbps download speeds. The ethernet cable included with the modem was a Category 5 which, he explained, has a limit of 100Mbps

 From my understanding this Modem can support 300 Mbps down over cable lines per the manufacturer spec. I'd hate to buy a new modem and have no luck with it either.

 we turned it on for the first time on May 31st, and it failed yesterday, July 9th. Netgear normally makes fantastic devices, our AC3200 Netgear Nighthawk router has served us well for four years. eventually we'll have to buy a new one but four years is a long time for a router and I attribute its longevity and ability to handle massive amounts of traffic for four years straight to its superior technology and build. I highly recommend the Nighthawk routers, they are great

Slow. Poor Support. Weak Warranty

 2. Once I had modem connected to coax and called Comcast to initiate the connection, the second-to-bottom internet connection light (the one that looks a bit like Saturn) would still not turn on. After hanging up, much cursing to my partner about telecom monopolies, and about 20 minutes of just leaving it alone, I noticed the connection finally activated by itself (the Comcast person didn’t tell me there could be such a lag.) Shout out to the excellent Netgear customer service guy who helped me figure out the coax thing :)
