 So these modems are not the rock solid modems from the early Motorola generation many of us have become accustomed.  I took away two star for the hassle caused by the modem and the aggravation of having to deal with Comcast automated voice hell system to reach a real human every time I had to call them. Of course Comcast could have easily told me it was the modem but refused to look at it since it wasn't company equipment. It was customer owned equipment

 The cable company kept insisting there wasn't a problem with their line and resisted sending out a technician. I put up with the lousy internet service for three months making repeated complaint calls of drops and low speeds to Comcast. Finally, they sent a cable tech out and replace the coaxial cable from the pole to the home because they did notice power levels were low with the upstream.  With the new coaxial cable install did improve speeds, the drop outs continued

 I had to hear the same sales pitch on the phone and by the technician as to why I should be using their company's modem instead of owning my own. uh huh, I'm not going to pay a monthly modem rental fee Comcast!

 Finally, they sent a cable tech out and replace the coaxial cable from the pole to the home because they did notice power levels were low with the upstream.  With the new coaxial cable install did improve speeds, the drop outs continued. To add insult to injury, Comcast raised by monthly rate per month and basically strong-armed me to accepting a 800/mbps service for seventy four dollars or keep my existing 200/mbps at one hundred a month. They did not give me the credit for the lousy service I experience for the three months prior to the new coaxial install

Bad MB8611 - Moto no longer infallible

 This time it got me a bit. Spectrum in our area has been steadily increasing our cable internet speeds. I was going to blame Spectrum for us continually loosing connectivity but I did some hunting and found out our modem was just cooking and could not keep up with the upgraded internet service we were getting and using as we have steadily doubled the number of devices we have using it. Spectrum has more then doubled our speed in the last two years, and we have got at least 2x the devices using our internet now - no small wonder the old modem cut out

I've had problems using the MB7621 DOCSIS 3.0 modem with Xfinity's "Fast" Internet service, which delivers 300Mbps downstream and 10Mbps upstream. Initially the performance was as advertised, but over time, or after a reboot, performance would drop to 50Mbps downstream and sometimes less than 10Mbps downstream, while the upstream performance was maintained.  After some investigation, I found that the problem may be with how Comcast handles the "extra" channels not used by my data plan

  I don't have a solution for this yet, other than to reboot the modem until it comes up into the "good" state. I have had Comcast technicians out to the house twice, and the second one made changes that initially seems to ensure the modem booted into the "good state", but the modem reverted to "bad state" behaviour later.  The answer may be to use a modem that only supports as many channels as you need for your plan, so that the modem is not subject to traffic on other channels. Or maybe DOCSIS 3

An explanation of the performance problems when using these modems with Comcast/Xfinity

The Motorola MB8600 should be a good modem, but if it were myself I would spend an extra $20 and get the MB8611 instead as the extra $20 gives you a 2.5Gb ethernet port and circuitry which will allow you to gain full access to your 1Gb Internet connection.

Setting up under my name since roommates are leaving. Found out that our old modem/router/cables couldn't even support the speed we were paying for so bought new cables (thanks to this sub) but still don't know if I'm making the right choice for modem and router. I don't want to rent but still don't completely understand everything but I think I narrowed it down to 3 good choices.

Don't want to rent router but don't know enough to confidently buy my own modem/router

I chose this over the Arris SB8200. The throughput was the same but the latency was 2-3 milliseconds less. I just felt that the Motorola was a better made product.

 So for me the upload is 141 megabits per second. But you know this isn't bad. So if you're not getting real good download speeds, just try different servers because sometimes those servers get busy and they don't have the upload capacity or they may have technical problems or difficulties. But this is the Cox Gigablast on the Netgear CM1000 modem

 So we're going to try a different server. Let's try this Citizen Cell Phone Cooperative. Oh, can't connect to them because they're too busy. Let's try a Firefly fiber broadband

 The app that I'm using is the speedtest.net app. You can go to the Windows Store or even Apple Store and download it for free and install it. It's a lot more accurate than going to the website

 So that's why it's blue in case you ever wonder when you get electronics why it's a different color plastic that is wrapped in. Alright, yeah I like this one. But anyway, we're hoping that this will help with the consistency of our strength of signal and so I'm going to show you how to hook it up, it's really simple. This one is your power source, alright, it's where you plug it in down here, okay

 Now what I'm going to do is, I'm going to use the existing wires that are already there, so you can see the yellow cable right here coming out of the bottom of this, this is our old modem, okay. So I'm going to unplug that and I will unplug my router, this is our router, okay. Those are plugged in down here, I'll unplug both of those, that's where the power going to them. I'm going to take this off the wall, I'll unplug the power cable back here, okay, ethernet cable that goes to the router, and then this is my cable coming in from the house, just unscrew your cable, okay, you can see, same thing

 So what you have with your wifi at your house, what you have is you have a modem, most people have some kind of cable internet. So a cable comes into the house, it goes into here, this is your modem, it will go into this and then you have a wire, ethernet cable running from this to your wifi router. So you have your modem and then you have a router, those are two separate things. This brings your internet signal into your house

 Those are plugged in down here, I'll unplug both of those, that's where the power going to them. I'm going to take this off the wall, I'll unplug the power cable back here, okay, ethernet cable that goes to the router, and then this is my cable coming in from the house, just unscrew your cable, okay, you can see, same thing. Now this one didn't have a color code, but most of them do, most of them are yellow. Alright, now this new one, like I showed you before, it's the back there, it's got a little on off button, which is nice, a lot of them don't have that, you just have to unplug it usually to reset it, and it has a reset button, which is really cool too

It does not matter if use Ethernet cable straight to the router or Wifi, I get the same speed across every device I test. I have used CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6e & CAT8 cables with same effect.  After the testing of my service and equipment with my ISP technician the router refused to provide an IP addressand produce speeds above 220mbps, and could not complete the test. I know my router is fine because my last service before I moved I was getting between 300-500mbps with it. So I call Netgear in hopes that I can either trouble shoot an issue or replace this modem since it is still under warranty. I get ahold of a Representative after holding 30min or so which is fine, but as they ask me basic info about the device and serial number they then asked if the lights where all on and green, or flashing etc

 I'm transferred and put on hold now for what seems like eternity but I'm going to have to wait so I can get this fixed. The wait sucks but I'm truly frustrated that after spending $185 for this upgrade I was downgraded and tossed to the side by support. I just want to have the speed I'm paying for.
