For reasons I'd prefer not to debate, I'm assembling what I'm calling a Homelessness Insurance Policy which I also plan to use for some actual normal backpacking (if for no other reason than to acquaint myself with it all).

My criteria for the tent thereof is as follows:

* Snow-capable
* Free Standing
* Durable enough for near-indefinite use (or as close to it as possible without obliterating my knees)
* 2-3 Person (I am one person but it would be for potentially truly living it)

My research has lead me to the Hilleberg Allak (maybe the 3, since it's less than a pound more than the 2 for notably more room to call my own). I'm aware it's on the heavier side of things at just over 8lb packed, and rather tanky, but I am looking for at least some degree of the latter.

We will mostly be backpacking in the Catskills or Adirondacks, anywhere from 1 to 3 or 4 days to start.  This is not for a few weeks on the Appalachian Trail.  Cost is not an issue, but I am not looking to spend $600 if I can get what I need for $300 and I can upgrade some other items with the savings.  Right now, most of our gear is base camp oriented and not backpacking.  I got a few of these suggestions from other posts in this Reddit.  I'm looking for help deciding and I am open to other suggestions I have not listed.  Thanks.

Ultralight (so my wife doesn't have to carry much)

 but I know people who have had this pad for years now and haven't had a problem with that. I've had the pad myself for almost eight months now and haven't had any problems and I've opened and closed this valve probably 100 to 200 times already. Sustainability and ethics is I think one of the most important topics when it comes to gear or any purchase that you're making and I've had some conversations with Nemo and I've been very interested in the ways that they're looking to improve the sustainability and ethical manufacturing of their products. First up, they audit their manufacturing processes and with that they look to make sure that their products are being made as sustainably as possible, as well as making sure that human rights are being maintained at their manufacturing plants

 There's a little rubber grommet at the end of the inflation bag here. You just stick that into the valve until it clicks in and then there's a narrow opening at the top and you just blow into that from about six inches away. Six inches to a foot away and it'll inflate the bag using the Bernoulli effect, so it creates a vortex that sucks air into the bag. that means you have to use less breath in order to get air into the bag and then inflate the pad

 But enough talking with an empty sleeping pad here. Let's use the inflation bag here and get it inflated. There's a little rubber grommet at the end of the inflation bag here. You just stick that into the valve until it clicks in and then there's a narrow opening at the top and you just blow into that from about six inches away

 So what you get with this sleeping pad is the stuff sack as well as an inflation bag that you can use. You get a little bit of a repair kit in here as well that just has some some patching materials. and then here is the inflation sack that you can use to blow up the pad and it works really, really well and we'll go over that a little bit here. All of this together weighs 615 grams, but the pad alone weighs 540 grams on my scale, which is the same as what Nemo advertises, which is really good

Like others have said, get the a new pad, a quilt and a lighter pack. I would recommend UGQ Bandit quilt and the Osprey Exos 58 pack. Once you use that suspension system on the Osprey and don’t end up with swamp back after a long day of hiking, there’s no going back. Get the Xlite large pad or Nemo Tensor if you’re a bigger person or a side sleeper

I've been getting more into backpacking this season vs car camping, and with the onslaught of sales from REI/backcountry et al this weekend I'm looking to finally pull the trigger on swapping out some overweight/bulky car-camping gear for something more reasonably sized so I feel like less of a jenga tower on the trail. But I'm getting overwhelmed with the options and what to attack first.

Obvious candidates for replacement are the big ones - sleeping pad (3lbs 7 oz), sleeping bag (also 3lbs 7 oz), and tent + footprint (4lbs 8oz), for a combined 12 lbs.

Haven't tried closed-cell pads but am open to them. Likely plan to lash to outside of pack so being ultra-compact is not a concern, though would prefer smaller than my current one, which is a beast.

On sleeping bags, since I'm a tosser/turner, I'm concerned about mummy-style bags, but they seem extremely popular. My current bag is rated a 30f, and I don't think I've ever (or intend to any time soon) camp in environments that come close to testing that limit.  The valve is open, just the top layer and none of the air is escaping. The yellow side is the front, the gray side is the bottom. Before going any further in this episode, let's go over some stats concerning this pad. First off, there are numerous versions of this sleeping pad

 You can lay on this any way that you want to and you don't have to worry about feeling the ground underneath you. As soon as you lay down on this, you begin feeling your heat radiating back to you and that's thanks to the insulation that aluminum film on the inside. The only time that you will feel the ground is like say if you sit up and you have only the butt pushing into the earth, you will feel it then. But with your body on the pad you do not feel anything at all

 I'm getting warm. This is going to take a while. All right. So we're at 20 and I'm dizzy, so we're looking at 22 23 breaths depending on how firm you want this so you can see there

The Most Comfortable Sleeping Pad I Have EVER USED - Insulated Nemo Tensor Ultralight Sleeping Pad

 I'm looking for minor improvements mostly (I can't really see a pathway to 10lb BPW without dropping big money on DCF gear) and making sure I have reasonable climate protection. Less weight would be nice, as I'd like to skip the onion valley resupply but I just don't know how my body will respond to that kind of altitude to do that kind of mileage. I'm a fairly competent runner but at sea level. Thanks for the input!

That depends where the hip pain is at. If the hip pain is at the bottom of the sleeping side, you'll want a thicker but deflated pad. This is caused by the sleeping pad being too hard and deflating it will help. In the case that your hip feels cold after deflating, get a CCF or something soft and place it under your hip area

Hi everyone, I'm really starting to suffer on a night with hip pain (I'm a side sleeper). I feel like I'm waking up constantly to roll over on to my other side. Wake up and repeat. I have a thermarest neoair. I find I'm unable to sleep on my back or front.

Any ideas or solutions to help with this? Anyone tried sleeping pills to help them sleep when camping. I'm reluctant to do this in case there is something I need to deal with in the night. I have recently introduced my son (9) to the hobby and would be worried about not hearing him if he needed me in the night.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

<p>Edit: Thank you everyone for all the help and suggestions. So I have an update and my hand has been forced. I tested the Neoair for leaks but couldn&#39;t find any, however while it was drying my son sat on it (light as a feather daddy) and all the ribs at the top have come unglued/welded giving me a huge pillow. It also deflated over night. So now I&#39;m in the market for a thicker mat and probably a warmer one too. I agree with many comments that comfort trumps weight. I&#39;m tempted by many of the suggested mats and now have a good shopping list to consider. I&#39;m 6 foot 4 but skinny so need a long mat but doesn&#39;t need to be wide.</p>

<p>I&#39;m from the UK so hammocks are out of the question I&#39;m afraid. Certainly where I live (Yorkshire Dales) there are very few woodlands left.</p>

<p>I have started a new regime of stretching my hip and yoga. I&#39;m also practicing sleeping on my back which went surprisingly well last night.</p>

 You cant call them because they have a permanent voicemail system that automatically comes on and they never called back. It’s just ridiculous that you cannot back up your product better with this price tag. You will be better served by doing more investigating on sleeping pads and staying away from this one.  Don't let it blow around. Be gentle on it. Don't flop down on it with boots or jeans with rivets.

COMFORTABLE, Quiet, Lightweight, Packs down easily and compactly, easy enough with a bit of  to inflate bit of practice, good insulating qualities (I've slept on it in the snow at 20 degrees F).

Sigh... Everything is a compromise.
