 Hey I'm JR, and today we are here to talk about two Marantz home theater receivers, the SR5014 and the SR6014. Now first off, they're Marantz, so we know that they're built well, they're built to last, the amplifiers are heavy duty and musically very warm, so they have that Marantz sound that we've come to know and love over the years. The SR5014 is a seven channel amplifier with 100 watts per channel. The 6014 adds two more channels and 10 more watts per channel, so it's nine channels at 110 watts

 They of course do have a phono input for a moving magnet cartridge on a turntable. There are plenty of digital and analog audio inputs, so you can get your music in using optical or coax digital or analog RCA connections.  Of those seven amplified channels, they average about 100 watts per channel but are capable of dynamic burst up to 180 watts. And when driving all seven, Marantz guarantees a 70% guarantee. For an avr I guess u limit sound quality with an average dac conversion process, it’s ok but not great for great audio sound good for home theater. Connectivity problems exist and it is a problem, Spotify, cec issues requiring power cycling all the time and poor customer support. Only done via email, no talking with advance tech support. Also volume control is jagged with remote

2 receiver rated at 100 watts at 2 channels driven. It's got a brand new look that's very different from the previous year's models. Up front the volume dial is now dead center, and next to that are some touch sensitive buttons. On the far right is the selection dial

 So no support for that out of the box at the time of this video. It also supports EARC. There's pre-outs for zone 2, the front left and right channels, and two subwoofer outputs. The subwoofers will play back the same exact signal, so they're wired in parallel

2.2 configuration, this receiver does handle those big action movies just fine. Sound effects were placed in their respective channels, and panning was convincing. As I said earlier, using this with subwoofers is a must, and does make this a fun little home theater receiver

 If you don't want to go through the on-screen menu, you can also access the same settings through the web interface. All you've got to do is type in the receiver's IP address slash setup and you'll be good to go. Under the Generals tab, we've got power control for the main and zone 2, get a sleep timer from 30 to 120 minutes, volume control for both zones, mute, add either off, you can attenuate it at 40, 20, or you can always keep it on. This is for when you hit the mute button on the remote control

Yamaha RX-V6A 8K Atmos AV Receiver Review

 We're not talking a subtle "oh yeah the sound is just so airy and the bass sounds tighter.". No, this is a point of fact.

I just went through a bunch of bullshit trying to get a Yamaha RX-V6A to sound even half decent for three months straight before I finally gave up and bought a Denon x3600. The difference is far beyond obvious. We're not talking a subtle "oh yeah the sound is just so airy and the bass sounds tighter."

Well I agree with at least the first sentence there.

I have a $30 Pyle amp I used while moving into my new house to power a pair of Klipsch Heresy speakers connected to my TV, because i couldn't deal with the sound the tv put out otherwise. They sounded great with it, but when i got the rest of my gear in place, they definitely sounded better being fed from a proper receiver from Marantz.... that said, the MSRP difference is literally around $970 for about a 20% at best improvement.

But at the same time, I have a pair of $30 Radioshack speakers that when connected to the dirt cheap amp, sound like absolute garbage - but when connected to the expensive Marantz, sound quite good. Its a very strange thing indeed.

I think what is more accurate is the most expensive products ***tend*** to elevate whatever they are connected to. (some other times, pairing cheap and expensive turns into a garbled mess for sure.)

Also nobody is going to argue with you that speakers are the most important thing in terms of how a system sounds. But an amp seems to be to me the next most likely thing to color the sound you are listening to, even if to a substantially lower degree.

My Yamaha CA 810 sounds noticeably more clear and direct than the budget Denon AVR it replaced (using the same speakers/cart/turntable). The Yamaha also sounds different than my little desktop Kenwood 3700. 

This stuff can be real subjective and based on personal interpretation. I definitely wouldnt argue against speakers and cart making BIGGEST difference overall but the amp choice made a noticeable difference for me...

I thought I agreed. But a few things I’ve found when I stopped reading and started listening. 

The type of amp matters more then you’d think. Type A and AB are my choice for full range speakers.

A good tube amp makes good speakers much better.

High current matters.

Ageee thay speakers are the main ingredient, but after that I would say its the amp and audio source. If the amp is not in the correct power range then it clips and causes terrible distortion. Overpowering a shittty amp is a great way to blow your speakers. Audio source is next and if you have a crappy stylus then its most definately notable. The preamp is a just a glorified switchboard with a volume knob, but it definately matters. I guess given that you have decent components and everything is setup correctly the preamp does have a pretty large impact.

I always liked the rule that the sound will only be as good as the weakest part of your system.

abx comparisons that people can, or can't.. tell a difference.    


Same thing with high end speakers, headphones, amps, and dacs.  Then after that, I'd also like to see audio formats tested.  Vinyl, cd, mp3, flac.. etc.. and see what can be realized as better quality.    


I doubt this will ever happen, as who in the industry would support such a test?

It exists in a place mostly free of science, free of measurements.. heavily laden with opinions.. and pretty sounding buzz words.  All the while being boosted by marketing and reviews in a way that no other consumer devices are.  It's just truly a strange animal.

Hey man, I get where you're coming from.  I was like you once.  At the time I was running speakers that cost more than 3x my front end electronics.

It's good that you are checking out lots of different gear in addition to reading about the technology.  The specs and measurements for stereo electronics don't tell the whole story.  

I agree that speakers are the part of the system that will change the sound the most.  If they are not good, then it's definitely what matters most.

On a turntable, assuming everything is working well (bearings lubricated, leveled, cartridge rake angle, azimuth, VTA, VTF, speed, anti-skate all set, and suspension and damping where applicable), then yeah the cartridge makes the biggest difference.  A setup problem that prevents you from getting to the bottom of the groove will hold any cartridge back.  I guess I'd argue that setup is more important than cartridge.

Unpopular statement: the "watts are watts" crowd is wrong.  If you don't hear a deference-don't spend the money, that's just logical.  People buying in all price ranges have this attitude. If you can't hear the difference between amps it might be time to look into better speakers.  

OP your gear is good and enjoying the music is what the hobby is all about.  I'm glad you're interested.  But let me assure you there is another league of system, and another after that.  If the megabuck amps didn't make a difference, the manufacturers wouldn't sell enough to stay in business.  Many of the amp manufacturers are decades old and have large followings.  Customers are excited for the new amp releases and line up to order the new models, because they know it will sound better.

One last thought on equipment manufacturers, the best ones only release new products when improvements have been made, not every 6-12 months like the stuff you find at box stores.

Customers are excited for the new amp releases and line up to order the new models, because they know it will sound better.</p>

<p>One last thought on equipment manufacturers, the best ones only release new products when improvements have been made, not every 6-12 months like the stuff you find at box stores.</p>

While I get your sentiment, I've noticed a huge difference between my setup and a friends with the same speakers.

Mine:  Denon e-300 with infinity beta 40's.  my speakers are out from the wall and toe'd in towards the listener with a rug in the middle of the room. there's a lack of bass and overall presence

His:  Cambridge audio integrated with speakers shoved into a corner/desks in front of the speakers and a bare hardwood floor.  His system sounds incredible, so clean, so much presence.

I don't know how to describe what I mean by presence, but there is a night/day difference between his setup and mine.

So I’ve been reading a lot on amplification and Ive come to the opinion that speakers are absolutely the end all- be all in audio.  I mean sure, a 15 watt $20 amp might be an issue in sonic quality.... but the debate about these other pieces has raged on for 40 years with no proof on either side... I hypothesize that we all believe what we want to believe. So if you want justification for spending $5k on an amplifier then you will hate what I have to say.. you will claim you can hear the differences. You won’t, however, commit to a bet for the price of that amp that you covet.  I submit to this community that speakers, cartridges, and preamps are where we get the color from our systems. An average- $30 flea market amp from 30 years ago will not sound any worse than a $3,000 new amp. I also know that this has been debated a million times and that 90% of you are offended by this truth. That said, if it could be proven otherwise, it would have by now. Roast me.
