But - it was a very nice Mapex Saturn kit played by an excellent drummer (even, controlled dynamics and hits cymbals softly so they don't overpower), miked with good mics (Senn 421, Shure 57, Akgs and whatnot) and pres (Focusrite ISA828s) by an experienced studio owner. And it all produced exceptionally balanced and good sounding tracks that "mixed themselves" :).

Genuinely curious. Not all engineers on albums are professionals. Ive heard lots of self produced albums and just dont understand how they dont get mud issues and their albums seem to sound all together. Is there something they have in the studio that I dont? Besides expensive analog gear? What is it guys do in the studio to have such contrast to what Im doing?

 This is a professional level drum kit and it is as good as anything else out there. It's really amazing to see how far they've come. Bravo to them for implementing all this cool technology and great features. These are serious drums

What's important to note when comparing the Saturn Evolution versus the Saturn is that the Saturn is a drum set and I would consider the Saturn Evolution to be more of a drum program.  There's no dampening as far as a pillow or blanket or anything on the inside of the drum, and the drum just sounds huge, and it was really easy to tune. So here we go with the snare wires off. Now nothing in the kick drum will make this drum definitely sing and snap more than normal, especially with the clear head on the front. If you did put some dampening in it, put a hole in the front head, which is how I normally play kick drums, you would get a totally different, more of a dry sound

 The lugs on these Mapex Saturn drums are really beautiful. Nice kind of cut to them. They really stand out on this nice natural-looking wood finish. They're really beautiful

 When you're making a soundproof room for your studio, you'll have the studs and some insulation, and maybe some sheet rock, then you'll put an air gap of maybe an inch or two, then you'll add more sheet rock and some rubber lining or whatever else. That air gap is going to keep the sound in. This is sort of what they're thinking here. Sometimes when you put your toms on cymbal stands, you're going to play the tom

 The sound will kind of go run down the cymbal stand to the legs and then onto the floor and kind of dissipate really fast. This makes it so the drum just keeps its resonance and decay and doesn't get sucked up by being hung on a cymbal stand. So it's a kind of unique feature. Only Mapex does it, and the ball joint really makes it so you can place the drum anywhere you want and still get the best possible tone

But I also very much like the pearl roadshow junior. Looking for something quality (or at least something close to it) in this price range. Don't care how loud it is so long as it's in that price range and it is durable and quality made.

 I finally ended up having to by a whole new high hat unit.  Bottom line, if not for these two stripped parts I would have given 4 stars as the drums do sound nice with the exception of the cymbals which are kind of cheap.

 If I can get these shells to sound great with the stock heads, I can only imagine how great they'll sound with better drum heads. The cymbals are complete trash but I still use em 😅. The toms are bright. The kick drum isn't as big sounding as a normal sized kick drum, but it's pretty punchy

  This kit is a perfect example of showing the importance of tuning, versus the kind of shells or drum heads you have. While the shells are relatively cheap compared to most drums, and the stock drum heads are okay, with the right tuning methods, you can get these drums to sound amazing. If I can get these shells to sound great with the stock heads, I can only imagine how great they'll sound with better drum heads. The cymbals are complete trash but I still use em 😅

.I'm sure that's nothing a better drum head can fix. Overall it sounds great.  You cannot beat the price! The quality of the hardware is good

Pearl Jazz Kit is Awesome!

 This kit can easily grow with you though, and I've already made a number of changes/additions. I immediately changed out the stock bass and tom drum heads with Remo heads and the snare with an Evans HD Dry. I also replaced the snare wires with PureSound Custom Pro. I purchased a telescoping cymbal stand and then bought a package of Meinl cymbals and hi-hats

The difference in sound quality between stock and upgrades is outstanding, even with lower-end cymbals.  If you are getting old and creaky like me and have back problems, I highly recommend you spend the money on a solid throne because you won't want to drum for long on the stock throne unless you enjoy having a numb butt, sore tailbone and aching lower back

Learning to Drum at Fifty-One!

I'll start by saying this is a great drumset for the money. It was purchased for a church and the only thing it's missing is a nice crash symbol. Otherwise it's great quality.  Let me start by saying this drums can't be beat for the money

Would not recommend to anybody with any musical knowledge in anything. Such a poorly made set.

 The snare and rack toms are pre-tuned, so only the floor tom and the bass need tuning. I've never done that before and just by listening carefully I feel I am pretty darn close if not dead on with how those drums sound.  In many other reviews I read where some (apparently more seasoned) drummers report that the cymbals need to be replaced. I'm sure that's so if you're gigging or recording with the thing right off the bat, but for a boy learning the drums I feel like I can take my time on any upgrades like that

Wow. Excellent value here. Great first drum set for my son. Went together pretty darn easily, packaging was good, and for the price I was pretty stunned at the quality of fit and finish all the way around

 Pound for pound there is absolutely nothing to complain about here. In my mind Pearl did a great job delivering high quality at a very reasonable price point.

 Throne is way too small. If you are a big guy you might lose it in the middle of a gig, if you know what I mean. No way can I play a 3 hr gig with that seat. I'm now thinking about either getting a bigger bass drum or the drums were cheap enough that I could buy a better set
