But - it was a very nice Mapex Saturn kit played by an excellent drummer (even, controlled dynamics and hits cymbals softly so they don't overpower), miked with good mics (Senn 421, Shure 57, Akgs and whatnot) and pres (Focusrite ISA828s) by an experienced studio owner. And it all produced exceptionally balanced and good sounding tracks that "mixed themselves" :).

Genuinely curious. Not all engineers on albums are professionals. Ive heard lots of self produced albums and just dont understand how they dont get mud issues and their albums seem to sound all together. Is there something they have in the studio that I dont? Besides expensive analog gear? What is it guys do in the studio to have such contrast to what Im doing?

 So for those of you who did not know, Mapex Saturn has been around since the early 90s.

 They started experimenting with blended shells back then and it was maple and it was walnut.

 During the mid 2000s they did a limited edition Birch walnut kit and now here we are in 2020.

 And we have the Saturn Evolution which is basically your choice.

 What's important to note when comparing the Saturn Evolution versus the Saturn is that the Saturn is a drum set

 and I would consider the Saturn Evolution to be more of a drum program.

 The regular Saturn is a drum set designed for people who want a professional level drum set.

 The Saturn Evolution is designed for people who are truly trying to dial in their sound.

 So you can pick a maple walnut bass drum, you could pick a birch walnut toms if you want.

 They were ignored because the quality was OK, but they weren't really anything to write home about.

 And as each year went on, their business processes improved, their manufacturing improved, everything started getting better.

 This is a professional level drum kit and it is as good as anything else out there.

 It's really amazing to see how far they've come.

 Bravo to them for implementing all this cool technology and great features.

 You probably are asking about the Chinese symbols that we're focusing on on this kit.

 And these are the new Wuhan Koi series Chinas.

 Now this has a much different approach than the standard Wuhan Chinese symbols.

 The dry one is cool for the staccato, a little more of a staccato thing, but this is so explosive.

 And I mean, they are more expensive than your standard Wuhan China, but when you hear you can probably see why.

 I really wish that I was more of a delicate player because I would love to hear these played by somebody with, you know,

 small sticks and a lot more nuance than I have because they are just super musical.

 If you compare the Saturn versus the Saturn Evolution, you're going to ask yourself why is there such a big price difference?

 The big price difference is because there are way more features on the Saturn Evolution.

 Again, like I said, it's a program for people that are looking to design their own setup based on sound.

 There is no snare drum in this lineup because most people that are going to be buying a kit like this,

 they already have several snare drums that are going to fit the bill.

 The hallmark of the Mapex Saturn has always been the enhanced bottom end,

 And it has a very straight attack with a round body.

 And if there's anything I like, it is a round bottom.

 I want that bottom end. They're taking a wet rag and slapping it on a countertop where it's just this...

 There's no dampening as far as a pillow or blanket or anything on the inside of the drum, and the drum just sounds huge, and it was really easy to tune. So here we go with the snare wires off. Now nothing in the kick drum will make this drum definitely sing and snap more than normal, especially with the clear head on the front. If you did put some dampening in it, put a hole in the front head, which is how I normally play kick drums, you would get a totally different, more of a dry sound

 The lugs on these Mapex Saturn drums are really beautiful. Nice kind of cut to them. They really stand out on this nice natural-looking wood finish. They're really beautiful
