   * Peak power at the wall, measured with a P3 Kill A Watt P4400, under combined CPU+GPU load can exceed 210 W. As such, the 230W adapter is genuinely necessary for full performance while still being able to charge the battery. The service manual specifies that 150 W and 200 W adapters can be used as well, though I don't know how the system will behave if either of these adapters are used.

 In early testing, this figure appears realistically attainable in everyday usage, but you need to turn off the keyboard backlight and set the monitor refresh rate to 60 Hz to get there. This has traditionally been a weakness of gaming laptops, so the fact that this kind of battery life is even possible on this class of hardware shows how far gaming laptops and AMD mobile processors have come.

 The system proves extremely responsive even under heavy load. Initial updates and app installs went *very* fast, and I was able to run several large installation and update tasks simultaneously with plenty of headroom to spare.

The competing Dell Latitude approached the 4,000 points that we consider an excellent score in PCMark 10; the ThinkPad T14s burst past it as a productivity powerhouse. All five laptops' swift SSDs aced PCMark 8's storage subtest.

After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) where available and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. (We also turn Wi-Fi off, putting the laptop into airplane mode.) In this test, we loop a video&mdash;a locally stored 720p file of the Blender Foundation short film Tears of Steel&mdash;with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system quits.

2-pound ThinkPad T14 and 2.4-pound ThinkPad X1 Carbon ultraportable. It lacks the cachet of the Carbon, but the eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 Pro processor of the T14s seen here might make it the best price/performance pick on Lenovo's 14-inch business menu.

We also run a custom Adobe Photoshop image-editing benchmark. Using an early 2018 release of the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, we apply a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image. We time each operation and add up the total (lower times are better). The Photoshop test stresses the CPU, storage subsystem, and RAM, but it can also take advantage of most GPUs to speed up the process of applying filters

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Review

I have the T14 and it's been great so far&mdash;it feels like I have ports and power of a desktop from a few years ago, in a 3lb package! Plus, you can upgrade the hardware yourself with simple tools, it doesn't void the warranty, and RAM/SSDs are _a ton_ cheaper than Apple's offering. Apple wants $200 for 16GB of RAM! That's like a $70 stick, maybe, from Crucial.

Hello all. I am looking for a laptop to replace my Surface Book 2 (i7, 256GB SSD, 8GB Ram, GTX 1050). I am replacing the laptop because it has a habit of overheating when sitting in idle and the GPU regularly disconnects on its own as well. I don't consider this machine reliable anymore. I am currently studying for a PhD in metallurgical engineering and I plan to use the computer for my daily work laptop. I sometimes have to bring my laptop down into the labs which can have dust, dirt, and some sand however I don't expect exposing my laptop to much more than sometimes dirty hands, or a table which may have a bit of dirt/sand on it. I am going to have to do some simulation work and coding work so these two devices were selected as they have a decent amount of CPU compute power. For my daily work I don't need GPU compute power however it would be nice to be able to play games when I am on vacation. Also either through internal hard drives or external I want to have around 1TB of storage so I can fit all my softwares, movies, games etc. when I go on vacations. Currently my two options are the new Macbook Pro M1 and a Thinkpad T14 AMD. Ultimately whatever laptop I pick I want to keep for 5 years. I don't mind having to replace the battery on the device but I want to ensure whatever I buy would last me that long through user repair. I was wondering if anyone on this subreddit has any input on buying advice and comparison between these two machines. The specs and price of the two machines I am considering are below

For the Thinkpad I was able to order this device during the November sale from Lenovo and was able to receive favorable pricing. I included a 1TB SSD and 16GB ram user upgrade because its cheaper to do so than to use Lenovo's addons. Also running Ryzen in dual channel ram configuration yield superior performance.

I am torn between sticking with the Thinkpad or switching to the Macbook. I hesitate and think about getting the MacBook because it has superior GPU and CPU performance than what the AMD Ryzen 7 4750U is able to provide as well as being shiny, new, and an aesthetically pleasing device. Also the macbook has superior battery life which is a nice to have feature but is not necessary. Additionally the screen and speakers are much better than the thinkpad. The Thinkpad I like because Lenovo has an awesome warranty and the durability and reparability of the Thinkpad is unmatched. Using a laptop for a PhD reliability is key for me as I will be using it for critical work. I outfitted the Macbook Pro with AppleCare+ however I think it may still be an inferior warranty option than what Lenovo can provide.

The money difference is somewhat of a concern however if I can find a justification for purchasing the macbook I would be all for it. The money otherwise saved from buying the thinkpad would likely be put towards a NAS server for my apartment.

The Enter key is SO soft and mushy and I've noticed many of the keys, like the pair of Space bars, are also soft and don't register contact multiple times. VERY frustrating as I can type around 50 wpm and I'm having to Backspace WAY too much! GRR!. I want to send this POS back and try another brand, but I've found no other alternatives in my searches.

Having 2 classes in row will mean you're looking to sit near a plug in class to keep it charged. You can dim the screen down but that's not always possible when you're in a bright classroom

 My old model, with a card slot, I routinely swapped out cards depending on my usage. I was hoping the battery life was some improved. It might be marginally but use it for a couple hours and it's going to need a charge. I wouldn't recommend this for students

Good but with some disappointments.

We did not open the shrink wrap as there was no indication of a keyboard. Be aware of false depictions of keyboard included even in the video. Otherwise, the product should be ok if you want a tablet, not a PC.
