 What's up everybody, this is Aaron from Aaron's Audio Corner and today we are going to be taking a look at the Kev R2C Kev Center Channel. It is a center channel that has a five inch mid-range with the one inch dome tweeter coaxially located in the mid-range and then it has a pair of five and a quarter inch woofers on either side. I'll throw up a picture right here so you can check it out. The unit that I got actually came from a viewer who sent this to me as well as the R8A which is the Atmos speaker

 So let's go down here and through the mid-range area, pretty much the same thing, but when you get above 1 kHz, that's when I start seeing things that I recall being different and then certainly when you get above, you know, the 8 kHz region to 10 kHz, I mean, you've got some really odd stuff going on. What this is really telling you is don't use the grill unless you have to. Now what happens when you stand the speaker upright, what does the spin data look like? Well, for this speaker, it's pretty much the exact same. Matter of fact, if I overlaid this set of data on top of the horizontal data, it's pretty much the exact same

 This house was built about seven years ago. It's not an old construction home. It's a new construction and all I had playing was just that center channel. What that tells me is that the impedance of the speaker dips down pretty low and sure enough when we go and look at the data, we see that as well

5 dB got rid of the sibilance. Maybe not got rid of it but certainly calmed it down enough to where it was livable because in my subjective opinion, it was intolerable in its bare form. Another thing that is also worth noting is kind of going back to the subjective aspect about the bass. When I was listening to Nas' new album, which if you haven't heard it and you like rap music, I say give that a shot

Kef R2c Center Channel Speaker Review

The most important thing is to have the room set up symmetrically. Placing some thick absorbent foam on the wall behind the couch could be very beneficial (242 panels from GIK). From KEF I’d recommend getting a pair of Q150s and a Q650C center (if you have room—I have a Q250C that just fits inside my media console). Then you can buy a pair of Q350s when you’re ready, use them as L and R, and move the Q150s to surround positions

My fiancé and I moved in together into the first floor apartment of the 3 family house we bought, and I left my sonos playbar at my parents apartment to go for a speaker setup. The dream is surround sound 5.1, but I want to start with 3.0 or 3.1 so I can afford better speakers. Our living room is small (8’6”L x 9’5”W whole, the couch and tv are off to the left at 7’4” wide, 7ft between us and TV wall). I will be going to Microcenter for the refurbished LG C1 65in, if the hours aren’t too high then I’ll get it and that saves us about $400. Then for the receiver I found a Denon 1910 on FB marketplace for $60 (or Yamaha RX573 for $75), for now I’ll do optical audio cable to TV and devices to TV HDMI then later upgrade to a receiver with 4K/120fps support (I play PS5).  So now speakers with a $1,000 budget. I chose to focus on LCR first, I want a sub but I know good ones are pricey (then again maybe there is a decent budget one for my small room). Towers are not fiancé approved, so it will be bookshelves that will be placed on wall mounted brackets, and a center horizontal tv stand (TV wall mounted). All prices are found from FB marketplace, eBay, Acc4Less, direct store, etc, I definitely like buying used to get better deals unless when used is just not an option. LCR for under $1,000USD

 The Q250c paired with the Q150 bookshelf speakers is a dream come true for the price point ($300-450 look for sales/refurb).  I was able to compare the ELAC Debut 2.0 c5.2, Polk Audio s35, Klipsch rp440c, and even an older Onkyo THX series center channel

.. The KEF Q250c crushed all of them. The bass response is fast, tight, and thunderous! Mids is rich, full of depth and warm (good warm, not hollow!) Highs/treble is crystal clear, vocals are amazing and true to sound if that makes sense

Hands down one of the best performing center channels available in my personal opinion. I am no audiophile but I can tell you what I like/love and it's the KEF Q Series for me. The Q250c paired with the Q150 bookshelf speakers is a dream come true for the price point ($300-450 look for sales/refurb).  I was able to compare the ELAC Debut 2

 Not for heavy bass lovers unless you pair with a sub as I do or listen in a small room. Very inefficient so a decent powered amp is needed, I use it with a Sonos Amp 125wpc and the speakers sound great. The amp connects to my B&W PV1 sub and my Technics SL1500c turntable and blends into my Sonos system really well for whole house listening. Superb speakers if you can get a good deal on them

 And the reason I say that is because the R3 is a rear ported speaker. So if you put it too close to the wall, you're going to effectively, you know, choke off that port, you know, if it's more than or less than, you know, a few inches away. You could seal up that port, but then it makes it more like a sealed enclosure with one six and a half inch woofer and you probably won't have the dynamic range or headroom that the R2C has, but that's purely conjecture. That's a guess based on, you know, some experience of what I'm seeing in the data

 So keep that in mind as I'm kind of going back and forth between this particular set of data. But with that said, what you can see is a very, man this KEF R3 looks really fantastic. The only thing that stood out to me and what I heard and what shows up in the data is there is a little bit of a high frequency bump going on here and it's about maybe 1 to 2 dB and it's just enough to maybe cause itself to stand out in a room. If you're listening, your typical seated position from a few meters away or more, what you might hear is a little bit more detail or sparkle or air or conversely you may call that bright or fatiguing

 Thing is though, it's more linear in progression. Now remember this is a sealed enclosure, whereas this is a ported enclosure. When the port comes into play, the distortion dips and then it increases significantly above that and you don't have that same trend with this speaker because you don't have a port. So you don't have a dip and then a significant increase

 First up we have the KEF R3 and it looks really good at 96 dB at one meter. You're well below 1% THD until you get below 100 Hz, really, really clean speaker here. Around 50 Hz, 70 Hz or so is when you start to pick up into the 3% THD region and then you just increase drastically below that frequency. Now let's switch over to the R2C and we can see that you're not quite far as down in the distortion values, but you're still really low

7 and the depth is at 12.1. So it was just perfect when I put this center speaker inside my BDI TV stand. So what do you guys think of the Kev R2C's unboxing video?  A lot of my speakers has been delayed. So just be patient and I'm definitely going to do an unboxing later in the future. But to get back into the Kev speakers, one of the reasons why it drove me to go ahead and purchase these speakers is just the sound and the aesthetics and looks. Those speakers are some sexy speakers

 So going back to the R2C's Kev's, one thing I will give everyone a heads up on, they are great sounding center speakers. They are definitely an upgrade from my previous speakers that I have owned in the past and for me I think they are pretty much top of the class in that price range. But I will say this, as in the center speaker is being as clear and warm as it is, it also doesn't have, the negative side of it is that it doesn't have a lot of bass to it. Now that's just kind of like my preliminary just to give everyone a heads up, but comparing that to the BMW's, that's one thing that I think it fails, well I want to say it fails, I would say that's one of the drawbacks on the center speaker

 I want them to still come from the screen area. So if I can't get it to sound correct I will 100% move it to where that projector is and I will be happy with that otherwise.  I've been using a phantom center for a while and I've made a video on my feelings about that so I'll spare you in this video but I do really miss having a dedicated thinner channel. Now if you've been following my upgrades as of late, I also have just recently purchased a UST projector, ultra short throw projector and ultra short throw projectors typically go where your center channel does and so a lot of you guys have been asking me what are you going to do about your positioning? Well I had all this in mind even before I bought the projector and before I bought the stand that my projector is sitting on. The stand has a cutout in the middle and I measured it to make sure that before I bought this that it fit and it did fit. I've tested it out off camera and it fits right in snug very perfectly

 But more back to the R2C. This is the center channel that matches with the R speaker line, the R5s, R7s and R11s I think it is in the Kev lineup. I have the R11s of course, R2C and then there are R3s, the small bookshelves that I will get to do my surround sound duties. Now one thing I did not pay attention to when I was doing my research that I'm actually happy about is that this center channel is sealed
