 And the reason I say that is because the R3 is a rear ported speaker. So if you put it too close to the wall, you're going to effectively, you know, choke off that port, you know, if it's more than or less than, you know, a few inches away. You could seal up that port, but then it makes it more like a sealed enclosure with one six and a half inch woofer and you probably won't have the dynamic range or headroom that the R2C has, but that's purely conjecture. That's a guess based on, you know, some experience of what I'm seeing in the data

 So keep that in mind as I'm kind of going back and forth between this particular set of data. But with that said, what you can see is a very, man this KEF R3 looks really fantastic. The only thing that stood out to me and what I heard and what shows up in the data is there is a little bit of a high frequency bump going on here and it's about maybe 1 to 2 dB and it's just enough to maybe cause itself to stand out in a room. If you're listening, your typical seated position from a few meters away or more, what you might hear is a little bit more detail or sparkle or air or conversely you may call that bright or fatiguing

 Thing is though, it's more linear in progression. Now remember this is a sealed enclosure, whereas this is a ported enclosure. When the port comes into play, the distortion dips and then it increases significantly above that and you don't have that same trend with this speaker because you don't have a port. So you don't have a dip and then a significant increase

 First up we have the KEF R3 and it looks really good at 96 dB at one meter. You're well below 1% THD until you get below 100 Hz, really, really clean speaker here. Around 50 Hz, 70 Hz or so is when you start to pick up into the 3% THD region and then you just increase drastically below that frequency. Now let's switch over to the R2C and we can see that you're not quite far as down in the distortion values, but you're still really low

Which is Better for Home Theater: (3) Kef R3 or (3) Kef R2c Center Channel speakers?

 Alright, I just finished my review of the KEF R2C and in that review I mentioned that

 people have already begun to ask me what I think about turning the R2C, which is the

 center channel, vertically and using that as an LCR in lieu of using KEF's R3 bookshelf

 So I'm going to provide you with a purely objective take on what I think as far as the

 comparison between those two speakers go.

 Again, I want to just emphasize that I am talking about taking the KEF R2C center channel

 and turning it from horizontal to standing up vertically and I'm comparing that to the

 I don't really have the means to recall what I heard in the R3.

 I just know that I really like the speaker.

 There were some deficiencies, but they all showed up in the data.

 Same thing for the KEF R2C and therefore I am going to keep this objectively based.

 First thing we're going to look at is the R3's Spindlerama data and in this, one thing

 I do want to note real fast is that the scale of this is a little bit different than typical

 and the reason for that is because the data in here kind of wants to exceed the bounds

 of the 50 decibel window and the Y axis.

 So keep that in mind as I'm kind of going back and forth between this particular set

 But with that said, what you can see is a very, man this KEF R3 looks really fantastic.

 The only thing that stood out to me and what I heard and what shows up in the data is there

 is a little bit of a high frequency bump going on here and it's about maybe 1 to 2 dB and

 it's just enough to maybe cause itself to stand out in a room.

 If you're listening, your typical seated position from a few meters away or more, what you might

 hear is a little bit more detail or sparkle or air or conversely you may call that bright

 It really just kind of depends on the listener and what their preference is, but the good

 thing about this particular speaker and the R2C is that they both have that characteristic

 and both of them can be EQ'd pretty readily to get rid of that.

 So as far as that comparison goes, it's a wash.

 The real thing that stands out, at least in my opinion, is just the frequency response

 on the low end and how low the two speakers are able to reach where the R3 is able to

 extend down into the 50Hz region if you wanted it to.

 Personally I probably wouldn't cross it any lower than 80Hz.

 The R2C, as you can see, is rolled off a lot sooner.

 The R3 is a single 6.5 inch mid-woofer for the bass and the R2C is dual 5.25 inch mid-woofers

 You would think that with the dual 5.25 inch mid-woofers that you could probably get louder.

 However, when you have a smaller mid-woofer, usually you're going to have a higher F3 point

 or a higher FS, so that means that the F3 point of the speaker is going to be a little

 bit higher if you're comparing apples to apples and that kind of takes place here.

 The other thing that stands out about the R2C is this dip right here on axis and off

 When I was listening to the R2C, the real problem that I had with it was around this

 8 to 9 kHz area and that stood out as sibilance and it was really quite annoying, but luckily

 So what you're really left with is the low frequency ability of either speaker and so

 If you want to go and look at the horizontal dispersion pattern, that's something else

 that I find interesting and let's see here.

 So in general, the directivity is pretty well controlled.

 So what I'm saying is that at 90 degrees, oh I'm sorry, let me back out, what I mean

 by that is if we're focusing on the red area where the majority of the SPL is, what we

 can see is at about, what is this, 500 Hz or so, you know, you're pretty wide and then

 as you get to higher frequencies, so by the time you're at 800 Hz, you're at 70 degrees

 and then at, what is this, about 1.3 kHz, you're at 60 degrees and then you kind of

 widen up again in that crossover region and then you start narrowing up again.

 So while the control directivity is actually pretty good, it's not that wide and it doesn't

 This graph isn't apples to apples because remember I'm taking the R2C's orientation

 So now I'm looking at the vertical positioning of the R2C and then that's how you will compare

 If you were to take this response graph and kind of flip it over, what will we have?
