What I really liked about this was that we got to add an active EQ to it to give you exaggerated fuzz sounds, and we got to give you a bias control that allows you to shape the tone of the fuzz at any point in time. So that's what makes this fuzz bender special

 It just sounds a little softer and it doesn't break up as much. So that's why we chose to have the first stage with these, you know, very modern transistors so we get the gain up. So there's lots of, you know, velcro fuzz available and then these particular japanese ones sound really good. They're very even, they're very consistent and they allow a good amount of trouble through

 What I really liked about this was that we got to add an active EQ to it to give you

 is that you can shape the, you know, style of square wave that you're getting, and you can shape the

 tone to proportions you could never get through standard fuzz.

 So what makes the tone of the fuzz bender so good? You have to add an EQ to it. You have to get it to

 explode and bloom, and you have to do all those things

 after you create the distortion. You can't put an EQ before a fuzz pedal. You have to make it kind of sing to you.

 So we had to adjust the fuzz. We had to make this the fuzz a singing mid-range type of fuzz,

 because then we were gonna later on add bass and treble.

 that's real aggressive like in the Boss Metal Zone or things like that. And so we took our cue from those extreme,

 EQ to a fuzz that was appropriate, something where you could get something. This fuzz control is really interesting.

 It's kind of like feeds current into the transistors.

 Instead of being a fuzz control that goes from clean to all-out war, this one is like adding hair to the dog.

 This is like how sick I get with my fuzz.

 So down here, we have just a little teeny bit of hair on the edge and

 it's kind of consistent. The shape of the distortion, the shape of the fuzz rather, is really consistent as you go up here.

 It just grows and grows and grows so that it gets just gnarlier and gnarlier. But it's not like it designed to clean up.

 You're never gonna get a clean sound out of this. Ain't gonna happen. Just more degrees of hair.

 So what makes the EQ so fun on this is that you have an, it's an active EQ.

 It's not just roll-offs or, you know, a little pass filter and things like that. These are actually active EQs.

 So you add something to the music that hasn't been there. When you take this up, you actually get 20 dB of boost or 20 dB of cut.

 Those type of things aren't normal on fuzz pedals. You don't have that kind of range. And since it's

 after the fuzz circuit, you get a real true boost in those frequencies instead of something just distorting the transistor more.

 So we really like this. You can do things where you can get a very mid-range sound.

 You can like turn both the EQs down a couple dB and get a very, you know, cutting fuzz sound.

 Or you can turn them up here and get something, say, muff-like where you got a, you know, notch in the mid-range.

 So you can do all kinds of stuff with it. When you're playing with fuzz sounds and you're trying to create a unique fuzz sound,

 you add other pedals, you start stacking pedals. But you don't always have room for extra pedals on your board.

 You want one pedal to do the job. So we added this particular bass.

 One of the things that was so incredible is as we started controlling the gain for this bass circuit, it starts shaking the room.

 It's just an unbelievable sound. You sound like you're getting ready to bust your 12-inch speaker and you're like,

 I wonder if this is going to be safe on 15s. But for bass players, because we had so much bass added,

 but it's cool. I mean, that's exactly what you love in fuzz pedals, is they have an exaggerated bass sound,

 except this sounds like we're stacking pedals and you got two or three pedals lined up to do the job of this one.

 So that was a lot of fun. Treble controls are funny because most of us guitar players are kind of leery of them.

 They're ice picky. They do weird things. They just make it sound dull. So we really had to find the right frequency.

 This one's centered at 10k and it still allows you that plus and minus 20 db.

 So what happens when you start to crank the treble is you keep on going to these exaggerated extremes.

 You start to get almost an octave effect because there's so much being boosted there.

 Carve away at the bass and now you start to get almost like a broken fuzz, like what's wrong with my fuzz?

 This is in super fuzz territory. This is getting really crazy. It's like a fuzz without the octave going,

 but it still has that kind of attack and edge on it that's so powerful with fuzz.

 And if you need a little bit less in your band mix, that's fine, but you always have it there to kind of cut through the mix.

 As this pedal kept on developing, we changed it from a gate control to give people broken fuzz sound.
