Very solid bass! I am not extremely experienced with basses, as I bought this as a beginner bass. However, it has a really great sound to it, and the quality feels nice. It is very fun to learn and play on. Only problem is that it arrived very much in need of a setup, and that setup cost a lot

  i prefer to put flat wound strings on (almost) all of my basses. i was in a Guitar Center or some such a few years ago, picked up a bass with flats on it, and i instantly fell in love with how they felt on my fingers. i like to say flats make my fingers glued/attached to the strings. some rounds have my fingers sliding off when i sweat profusely

 flats don't do that.  overall, not a bad bass for the price. it sounds and feels nice.

i will be blunt: this thing is on the heavy side. not exactly like an ash body, but enough to let you know it's there with you.  another thing: i did not realize this instrument has active pickups. give me 3 knobs on a bass without the actives and i'm as happy as a pig in poo

  For now I'll just do scales and practice using my headphones but in time I'll be turning this thing up through my Carvin 250 watt 15" combo with a Hartke 2-10" cabinet and let my wife deal with it.

  The pickups and active electronics are pretty impressive for a bass at this price point and the tuners are decent.  The body shape is a bit different but hey why not be different and maybe once I get back into this more and start to jam and maybe gig I will spend some more money for a higher end instrument. Excellent instrument for the price

I got this bass as a gift. When I first played it I could not believe how great it was. The set up out of the box was perfect, and the strings really complimented the bass well. Playability is great and the neck feels smooth

 This is the perfect bass for anyone starting out, or for more experienced players an awesome addition to your collection. The bass has 1 minor tint small minuscule flaw BUT it's  absolutely forgiven for this price point. The bridge pickup is weak, bit on the flat side, the neck split pickup though is great and when you mix them you get a really great sound. Highly recommend

You can move your hand so quickly and so flawlessly over every single note in an instant.  I remember seeing this bass at NAMM and my jaw dropped because the finish is absolutely insane. Then to compliment that, you have a clear pickguard as well as black hardware, and this is driven by Music Man's own bridge and different hardware too, and I have to say they hold up really well, especially the tuning is actually extremely stable, and it works very well. For the pickup, you have Sterling's own H1 Alnico humbucker, and this you can get a lot of really thick, very punchy, just really rich sounds with it that's going to have that classic Music Man growl to it, and then that combined with their three band active preamp really leads to a lot of different ways you can sculpt your tone, and really especially you get that really great Music Man growl when you add the mids just a little more on top of it, and what's great is it sounds like a Music Man. It sounds like its older, more expensive USA made stingray, and there's a lot of just truly amazing tones you can get with it, but no matter what, they're going to be very thick and very full

 This is the Sterling by Music Man Stingray Ray 34 PB, and it's a truly excellent bang for your buck bass full of extremely thick and very punchy tones, all for only $800. So the Ray 34 PB is brand new to the 2019 line of basses for Sterling by Music Man. If you don't know Sterling by Music Man, it's the made in Indonesia brand of Music Man guitars and basses, and you get truly excellent value for every single instrument. While they're made in Indonesia, they're brought over to the United States, then they're rigorously checked and inspected and set up and then sent out to distributors

 Now this particular model features an ash body, though if you get a painted body, those are mahogany. So this one has an ash body and a roasted maple neck. That's right, just like the current US Stingray lineup, these have roasted maple necks as well. The pickup is Sterling's own H1 El Niko Humbucker, and you have a three-band preamp

The Ray34 I have is probably the best that Sterling has to offer before getting an EBMM bass. But given that Sterling basses sound almost exactly the same as an actual EBMM bass, you have to decide for yourself whether you think that the extra nice neck and lighter weight is worth the $2k more. The Ray34 tuners are also known to be kind of janky, specifically on the purple sparkle finishes. Besides that though, Sterling's are well worth the money, even the SUB series

I'm specifically looking at different models of the short scale Stingray bass. 

My question is, what is the difference between the Sterling model of this bass and the original Music Man model in terms of playability/feel and sound? 

The prices seem to range from about $400 for a Sterling and up to $3000 for an original Music Man. That's a big range, so it's hard to wrap my head around what could be so much better in the Music Man Stingray. I am not made of money but would consider buying a Music Man if it's truly worth the price.

Sterling Stingray vs. Music Man Stingray, what's the difference besides price?

 The roasted maple neck and fretboard is very dark compared to the advertised photo and makes it difficult to see the fret markers. Other than that this is a pleasure to play and I'm now sold on getting a Ray35.

The Sterling by Musicman Ray34 is a great value if your looking for that classic Stingray look and sound. I'm quite impressed with this bass. Comparing it to my ErnieBall Stingray Special which costs more than double, this feels and sounds just as good good. I will say the ErnieBall feels a little more polished with the nicer tuners and the neck being smoother
