Ibanez 2019 SR500E Bass Guitar

Or at least no longer a great deal. 4-5 years ago back when they were US$275 new they were steals, but now that they're $430 plus tax and shipping, they're no longer this amazing moneyball solution, they're at best a decent bass at a fair price. In my opinion if you've got $500 to spend on a bass I'd get a used Mexican Fender or Ibanez SR500, that's where the real value is at that price point.

So, I play guitar, for like 9 years now.

Aaand I wanna get into bass as well, buuut I'm on a pretty tight budget.

[Question] What bass to go for as a beginner?

On the plus side, it's comfortable, nice to play, good quality for the price. The preamp offers many possibilities once you've figured out the controls, and it also has a passive mode. The pickups work well in both mode, and they have 4 wires so if you know how to solder you can add switches to get more sound options.

Ibanez vs Sire

the main reason to get a SR500 is I believe those are the cheapest Ibanez that have those sweet bartolini pickups. I have a 500 and it's great, I think if you get a used one in good condition and give it a proper setup it will make you very happy

Ibanez SR305 vs SR505: worth the extra$?

Ibanez is pretty lightweight. The SR series by Ibanez is a good way to go. I used to own an SR500 and it was a great bass. It’s a bass I certainly miss and if you can find a pre-owned one in good shape they tend to be priced pretty reasonably

 Onto the neck, it's got a bolt-on neck, maple neck with a jatoba fingerboard. It looks a little bit like the Pofero, it feels pretty good, it feels like a rosewood to be honest. In terms of the specs, I didn't really see a lot what the radius is, I'd probably say it's probably about 12 radius, medium jumbo frets, it's a 13 inch scale, so that's short scale, 13 inches from the nut to the saddles there. It's got a colour coded headstock which looks pretty sweet with open tuners

 These retail for around £135 for the black and they do a sort of a mint green and a red colour and they sort of vary between £140 and £165. BAX, I've currently got these for £135 at the minute, so nice cheap guitar. So down to the specs, this has got a poplar wood body with a nice weight to it, nice thickness to it as well. It's finishing a glossy black, so it's got a three ply pickguard, it's got the PJ setup, these are called dynamics pickups, so it's got the P bass on the front position and on the back it's got a jazz bass, so you get a variation of sounds, it's got a nice sturdy bridge piece there, really good quality, high mass, so it resonates well

 So I'm going to be playing to a backing track today, I'm not a bass player so go easy on me and I will be using a plectrum. So I'll be going for the three different positions, so the P bass pickup, then I'll play both pickups together and then just that jazz bass on its own. So let's plug it in, see what it sounds like. Let me know what you think

Ibanez TMB30 Talman Short Scale Bass Review

 The control, you've got volume, volume tone, which is fine. I like the fact that I can blend the pickups together. I like the fact that I've got the option of blending a little bit of the P in with a little bit of the J bass pickup. So that's really good

 I like them. And so this is the only set of pickups in any of my short scale basses that I haven't thought about changing out. They're good. I like them

 I'm not crazy though about the active circuit in that one. Not that it doesn't work. It works too well though sometimes and you can actually get too much treble in your sound that's sort of ear piercing. It allows you to adjust too much using that little preamp, which is one of the reasons I like this

 I do think the Squier CV line is a good value, too. I own a Bass VI from line and think it is, again with a good set up and some adjustments, perfectly gig and recording ready.

My favorite cheap bass is the Ibanez Talman line. I got my 30” 5 string Talman for under $250 and with a setup and new saddles to help with intonation on the B string, it’s perfectly gig and recording worthy. I'm more than happy with the purchase now, and have put up both of my previous basses for sale. It's very convenient, an entirely different world to play it compared to slimmer necks, and I like its tone a lot. Love it.

Gear Thread: Week of Nov. 02

I am an experienced musician but new to the bass!  For under $200 this is an amazing little bass.  A joy to look at, and a joy to play!  I knew I wanted a PJ bass and short scale and this ticked all my boxes.  The frets are nice and the action was nice straight outta the box! I even scored a coupon of 15% off for calling in.  $145 out the door

Purchased this guy around 5-6 months ago, I was a complete absolute beginner but after reading some reviews of beginner sets I decided to buy all my bass stuff separately. Very happy I did. A few points, I'm glad I choose a bass with a shorter neck, great for a beginner with short arms or a confined practice area. A bit chunky and heavy for a beginner but if you purchase a padded strap it won't be a problem
