Biggest disappointments and surprise likes for basses?

I've never played an easier bass in my life (I haven't played many, 15 at most). It's so good, I was surprised as hell but the P bass which everyone describes as a heavy, fat necked thing, just fell into my hands and I played it for an hour straight, before the guy came back and said "sure you don't need an amp ?". I said "no thanks, I'll just buy this one" because the feel matters more than the sound for me.

Nice right out of the box..frets are dressed nice..pups are good..but I usually change them to EMGs on all my basses.. The only thing I don't like is the big radius on the neck..i have small hands...nice..but it's not my one of my favorites... Can't go wrong with an Ibanez.. The quality is usually v...

Shopping advice for a beat-up old fart whose last market research was circa 2001?

I love my Mustang bass. They’re a couple hundred over your asking price brand new right now, but damn are they fun to play! They’re very light (not chambered, but thin bodied) with a classic look and a 30” scale. That said, looking at other 30” alternatives, I came across the Ibanez TMB30.

For the money it's a very good deal. The strings could be better and the head stock looks kinda cheap. But it does the job.

Help me pick a bass from my list?

They’re pretty much all good. My personal favourites are the Yamaha or the Ibanez talman. But I hear the corts are also really good value for money. I don’t think there’s really a wrong choice from that list.

are there any short scale passive basses?

I have one and it’s killer, plenty good enough for gigs! I prefer the Ray type sound so I put a G&L humbucker in my TMB35. Even with the 30”, it can do a pretty good low B, better than some 34” basses I’ve tried, but I keep it at D standard mostly because my band hardly ever needs anything lower than that.

No frills bass guitar for recording?

My first bass was an Ibanez Talman. Super cheap, but sounds amazing! I’ve bought others since then, but the Ibanez is still by far the bass I use the most.
