They're solid in my opinion(and HEAVY), one of the few Ibanez models that you pick up and say to yourself, "This ain't no usual Ibanez..."

I’m looking to closely replicate the tone of a genuine EB MM Stingray but unfortunately they are quite a bit out of my budget. There is a Ibanez ATK PGB1 (Paul Gray signature bass) on sale on marketplace that is slightly out of my price range but I figured I should buy it and be happy instead of buying something cheap and dull sounding and still being dissatisfied. I have only slightly looked into the Sterling series Ray4, but from what I’ve seen they do not have that Stingray famous “punchy” mid/treble rich tone. Can anyone contest this? Can a Ray4 be setup/improved to more closely sound like a genuine Stingray or is this a lost cause? Any other suggestions for mimicking the stingray tone? I have had 2 Ibanez SR series and although they both had great tone it still wasn’t exactly what I was looking for.

Ibanez ATK or Sterling Ray4

 And we look at them and just kind of celebrate them in this series. So one of the last ones I did is what you see behind me right now, which is a 73 or 74 Gibson grabber bass that I own, which is a wonderful instrument. We did a video on that one. And today we're looking at this Ibanez ATK 300

 And then instead of a passive tone knob, this is an active bass with a preamp in it that runs on a battery. And this is a three-band active EQ right here. So we have treble, mids, and bass. So obviously, you know, with this different flexibility, that makes this a great studio bass and also a great live bass

 And, you know, if you can come across one of these ATKs, it's a beautiful bass. I mean, this natural piece of wood here is just really nice looking, really beautiful to the touch. The neck is really smooth. It feels like kind of a satin urethane finish to it that's kind of been rubbed down a little bit over the years

 And what we have here is a three-way toggle switch to switch between the different rails in the pickup. Another cool thing is we have a master volume here. And then instead of a passive tone knob, this is an active bass with a preamp in it that runs on a battery. And this is a three-band active EQ right here

 Alright, so I've removed the back of the ATK bass here, and we've got our battery, our preamp, and I've also removed the pickup selector switch, which is attached to another little circuit board, and on the front of that board, there is a small cap and a resistor here, and I've done some probing around, and I've determined that that is in fact the filter for the traditional mode, so I've been trying to measure them in circuit, and it's not really working out too well for me. It looks to be, judging on the color code of the resistor, it's about a 9k resistor, but the cap, the markings are just not telling me what the value is, so I'll probably have to pull it off and measure it, and then we'll leave the resistor in place and try and select a new capacitor that will give us more of a roll off of the high end in the traditional mode. So I'll get that out of there, and I don't have my soldering iron in this room with me, so I'm going to actually not show the soldering part, but you want to come around to the back and find out where the cap comes through, and basically just heat up both terminals with your soldering iron, and you can just pull it right out. It should just come right out if you heat up both of those terminals at once

 So I'll do that, and we'll figure out what the new value is. Alright, I've got the new cap installed here, and I'll flip it over so we can take a look, and there's the new cap. It actually looks a little bit larger, but there's still enough room to cram it all in there, and I'll actually take the old cap and just tape it to the back of the cover plate in case I ever decide to put this thing back to its original state. So we'll get it all back together, and then we'll play a sound sample

 Alright, so we'll start off in the bright mode. We'll do a sample, and basically the way it was before, traditional and bright, there was very little difference. It was really hard to tell you even flick the switch around. So here's bright, and here's the new mode, the new traditional mode with more high-end rolled up

 Well, on my particular bass, I can barely tell the difference between traditional mode and the bright mode, so I'm going to open this up, and I suspect that there's a capacitor and a resistor that we can modify to have this thing roll off a bit more of the high so it's more pronounced in the traditional position. So we'll take it apart, and we'll have a look. 90's Ibanez ATK300 Bass - Traditional Mode Mod

 All control set, flat, pick up position one, volume up full. You can hear that it's really close to a Music Man stingray. It's kind of got that signature high-end thing going for it. Let's go ahead and hear position two

 The other notable feature about this guitar is that it is massive. You can see it's got this huge hunk of metal for a bridge and the biggest chunkiest neck I've ever seen on an Ibanez bass. Ibanez basses are kind of famous or infamous for having extremely thin, fast necks, but the ATK is certainly a departure from that vision. Most Ibanezs feel more like a thin jazz bass, or the ATK feels more like a thicker P bass

 I have very large hands so the big chunky neck felt like it was made for me. my only complaints are that there's no real convenient place to put your thumb, and a neck pickup (the 700 series has one though, but in this price range, it's not needed the tone is spectacular) Sometimes is seems that the mids are a little bit too "low" but the EQ makes up for that. overall, a great bass for anyone that needs a big Stingrayish tone and a lot of capabilities.

I was looking for a G&L when I found this at a shop, it blew me away, not only with it's tone and playability but also with its price. It's definitely not a lightweight bass (though not too heavy really) but some players may find it heavy. Surprised to say the least

 I found out that one of the wires was lose from the soldering thing. Once I had that fixed a couple of days later there was a buzzing sound. I found out that it was the truss rod that was doing that. I returned the bass a couple of days after that

 I remember seeing this bass at NAMM and my jaw dropped because the finish is absolutely insane. Then to compliment that, you have a clear pickguard as well as black hardware, and this is driven by Music Man's own bridge and different hardware too, and I have to say they hold up really well, especially the tuning is actually extremely stable, and it works very well. For the pickup, you have Sterling's own H1 Alnico humbucker, and this you can get a lot of really thick, very punchy, just really rich sounds with it that's going to have that classic Music Man growl to it, and then that combined with their three band active preamp really leads to a lot of different ways you can sculpt your tone, and really especially you get that really great Music Man growl when you add the mids just a little more on top of it, and what's great is it sounds like a Music Man. It sounds like its older, more expensive USA made stingray, and there's a lot of just truly amazing tones you can get with it, but no matter what, they're going to be very thick and very full

 This is the Sterling by Music Man Stingray Ray 34 PB, and it's a truly excellent bang for your buck bass full of extremely thick and very punchy tones, all for only $800. So the Ray 34 PB is brand new to the 2019 line of basses for Sterling by Music Man. If you don't know Sterling by Music Man, it's the made in Indonesia brand of Music Man guitars and basses, and you get truly excellent value for every single instrument. While they're made in Indonesia, they're brought over to the United States, then they're rigorously checked and inspected and set up and then sent out to distributors

4 pounds, a significant difference. And the BFR on the wall back here is 7.4 pounds or something like that. In regards to quality control, this isn't a bad bass

 Now this particular model features an ash body, though if you get a painted body, those are mahogany. So this one has an ash body and a roasted maple neck. That's right, just like the current US Stingray lineup, these have roasted maple necks as well. The pickup is Sterling's own H1 El Niko Humbucker, and you have a three-band preamp

I'm 15. I don't have a lot of money. What's a good cheap bass guitar for beginners?

The Ray34 I have is probably the best that Sterling has to offer before getting an EBMM bass. But given that Sterling basses sound almost exactly the same as an actual EBMM bass, you have to decide for yourself whether you think that the extra nice neck and lighter weight is worth the $2k more. The Ray34 tuners are also known to be kind of janky, specifically on the purple sparkle finishes. Besides that though, Sterling's are well worth the money, even the SUB series

I am primarily a guitar player, so I don't know a ton about basses and what to look for, so bear with me. I am currently looking to purchase a higher quality bass than my current fender Squier P bass, and would like to switch to short scale for playability.

I'm specifically looking at different models of the short scale Stingray bass. 

My question is, what is the difference between the Sterling model of this bass and the original Music Man model in terms of playability/feel and sound? 

The prices seem to range from about $400 for a Sterling and up to $3000 for an original Music Man. That's a big range, so it's hard to wrap my head around what could be so much better in the Music Man Stingray. I am not made of money but would consider buying a Music Man if it's truly worth the price.

Sterling Stingray vs. Music Man Stingray, what's the difference besides price?

 The roasted maple neck and fretboard is very dark compared to the advertised photo and makes it difficult to see the fret markers. Other than that this is a pleasure to play and I'm now sold on getting a Ray35.

The Sterling by Musicman Ray34 is a great value if your looking for that classic Stingray look and sound. I'm quite impressed with this bass. Comparing it to my ErnieBall Stingray Special which costs more than double, this feels and sounds just as good good. I will say the ErnieBall feels a little more polished with the nicer tuners and the neck being smoother
